I made a .xsession file with "exec jwm".
I also:
'#rcctl enable xenodm'
'#rcctl start xenodm'

to test the JWM file:
'exec jwm'
...but result was - 'error - could not open display.'

if I try:
'exec openbox'
..result is - 'Openbox-Message: Failed to open the display from the Display environment variable.'

..which kinda sounds like xenodm hasn't kicked in??

I'll go back to getting xfce4 working oops or even fvwm and try a re-do!!
[automerge]1583722110[/automerge]
oops - looks like I might be needing to redo:

'do 'nano .xinitrc', and enter 'exec' followed by the name of the desktop environment / window manager you want xenodm to automatically start after login..'

sounds like X is failing to start rather than a window manager problem. Could you post your dmesg output?

erm...seems I need to do a re-install.
Bootup takes me to the openbsd login in window...but when I enter name and password it loops back to the login window again. Cant find a way pass this to a cli prompt.

@mortlocli What GPU do you have? I've never tried XenoDM, but the (presumably) unsupported 6600 in my G5 would present essentially the same behavior whenever trying to get into X via terminal, but not so on my Radeon machines.

Use Ctrl + Alt + F1 to switch to the CLI. Usually, you will also need the Fn key if it is present.

aha - thanks z970mp, I discovered that just a few days ago..and had forgotten...
so dmesg output:

That GPU should be supported and I don't see anything weird there. How about the output from /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

edit: To rule out a bug in jwm, try using cwm instead. It's included in the base system (and it's my personal favorite; I run it on everything) so you can be sure it works. That loop may be caused by jwm crashing when it tries to start and xenodm responding by presenting the login screen again.

Id already tried CWM, 556fmJoe. Had the same output as JWM. Interested to read your comment re CWM... must look into that.

I think it is time for me to do a re-install. I was curious about running a unix system ...this exercise has given me a look at just how different it is to Linux.

I think perhaps for my ibook I should take another look at Lubuntu or perhaps go back to experiemnt with Debian to have a go at making a OS for PPC.

OpenBSD looks like a good learning experience...to get back to sometime.

For anyone with a PowerBook or iBook who wants middle and right clicking without an external mouse you can remap your unused keys to emulate middle click and right click actions in X11. To make F10 middle click and F11 right click, try this:

1.) Install the xkbset package
Code:
# pkg_add xkbset

2.) Create a text file called .xmodmaprc (or whatever you prefer) in your home directory, with the following lines
Code:
keycode 76 = Pointer_Button2
keycode 95 = Pointer_Button3

3.) Run this command:
Code:
$ xmodmap .xmodmaprc

4.) Then this:
Code:
$ xkbset m

Put the xmodmap and xkbset commands in your .xsession file to have them run automatically when X is started. Keycodes 76 and 95 correspond to F10 and F11 on my Tibook, but yours may be different. You can use the xev tool to find the keycodes of any key if you want to use something other than F10 and F11.

This is a great thread. I'm a long time OpenBSD user but never tried it on a PPC machine. I might have to find a used iBook on ebay to play with during our quarantine. :)

Anybody know how to decrease the text size for the CLI interface on an iBook G4 with OpenBSD 6.6? The OpenBSD FAQ gives how to do it for devices using VGA, but the iBook is using radeondrm... I found an ancient page from 2003 that has you recompiling the kernel to do it but I don't think those instructions exactly apply anymore.

I'd kind of like to use the iBook as distraction free device and not using X11 is one way to limiting those but I'd rather not work at like 18 point font.

I'm also having trouble getting Wifi to automatically connect at boot.

I can do

Bash:
ifconfig bwi0 up
ifconfig bwi0 join myssid wpakey mypassphrase
dhclient

and get a working net connection after boot but having my hostfile.bwi0 as

Bash:
join myssid wpakey mypassphrase
dhcp
up

seems to get a lease at boot but doesn't actually seem to let me connect anywhere. Not sure what's wrong there.

Overall I'm pretty impressed that OpenBSD 6.6 works so well on a device so old.

Regarding the text size of the CLI, I found the solution once and documented it here.

EDIT but indeed does it still apply to 6.6 ...

Added i3, made adjustments, and consolidated all sectors into directories.

Installed 6.6 on an iBook G3. For whatever reason, it defaulted to the software renderer. I was able to gain 3D acceleration by editing /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-radeon.conf with the following:

Code:
Section "OutputClass"

Identifier "Radeon"

MatchDriver "modesetting"

Driver "modesetting"

Option "DRI" "3"

EndSection
And that did it for me. No more softpipe.

Oh, and Otter-Browser actually works really well. I Just need to setup adblocking via hosts file, and I should be good to go. Looks like Otter-Browser might be the future, as the Palemoon guys seem to have reached the end of the line, with their inability to properly implement shadowdom.

Otter has an adblocker built in with preconfigured lists. All you need to do is check the boxes for the ones you want. I find it works well.

Wonder if that same fix could be applied on my Nvidia FX5200 Powerbook G4 ?

@sparty411 could you please make a little video of your iBook G3 running OpenBSD? That'd be really cool I think :)
I would, but I think I borked something when I enabled the build in adblocking lists in Otter-Browser. Any time I open a browser, be it Netsurf, or Otter-Browser, the system just locks up. Any ideas @556fmjoe ?

That card uses the nv(4) driver and no DRI or KMS is available, unfortunately. There are some options you can play with though, like EXA vs XAA acceleration methods, but they make little difference in my experience.

I'd start by disabling Otter's content blocker by editing ~/.config/otter/otter.conf and deleting the line(s) for content blocking.

Browsers themselves sometimes lock up if you lose the network before they start up. If you can't ping the default gateway, run "doas sh /etc/netstart" to restart your networking config and try it again.

@sparty411 Forgot to ask, did this problem occur only after enabling DRI? Xenocara is pretty good at enabling it if the card can do it. It's possible it was disabled for a reason.

No, it was working fine for quite a while after enabling DRI. It wasn't until I enabled the adblock lists in Otter-Browser. Even with DRI disabled, it still locks up.

Always a solution then , I took my iBook G4 12" out of storage and am now installing 6.7 onto it.
Finally have a use for it again :)
Yesterday evening I already had 6.6 installed and adapted and DRI is working on the iBooks Radeon.

Minitube on 6.6 was however no longer working, I guess due to the ever-changing Youtube API trying to make us obsolete.

6.7 -current is broken when it comes to qt5 , smtube and everything that uses it complains about an undefined symbol __popcountsi2 lazy binding so back to 6.6 with no working smtube it is ...

Hope all the hard-working devs can fix that when 6.7 is due for release.

Oh and openbsd.org is down since this morning (it's 11:21 AM here now) :(

That's probably because the base compiler in PowerPC was switched from GCC to Clang for 6.7, and that has resulted in some broken packages. The devs are asking people who run -current, especially on macppc, to report issues they find before 6.7 rolls out: https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&m=158652906719327&w=2

This did solve the freezing issue with Otter-Browser! Thanks!
