I have an XS Max and love it. It's a brilliant phone, and is still going very strong. I look forward to that continuing now that Apple aren't deliberately slowing down phones older than 12 months for whatever reason they tried to justify doing that.

However - my girlfriend recently purchased a Huawei P30 Pro, and in many ways, it leaves the Max in the dust. That's not surprising given the rate of technology - every few months, the best phone will be bettered, but the difference in camera between these two phones is absolutely insane.

It's made me consider - for the first time since the iPhone 3G - leaving the iPhone and exploring something new. It feels like other manufacturers aren't just dabbling in things that Apple end up doing better, but are legitimately getting there first with a superior product.

Has anyone else played with something that gives them pause for thought like this?

Who on earth would use Huawei at this point?

Even ignoring the blatantly deeply concerning news coming out, their software experience was always subpar which itself is a deal-breaker.

I'm not here to defend Huawei (although the 'deeply concerning' news seems conspiratorial at best) but having spent time hands-on with their latest, it's so much better than my phone, it's giving me pause for thought. I still don't think Android is as good as iOS so I agree with you there, but the hardware differences are so dramatic, it's definitely making me think.

Lots of people like to change things. Cars are a good example. But when someone decides to buy a Ford instead of a Chevy it's not such a soul searching teeth gnashing dilemma. Why should it be for a stupid phone that cost 1/60th the price? Get whatever gadget you want. Nobody cares.

It is not conspiracy...it is fact. Soon, Huawei may lose everything that you know...no more Facebook, Twitter, Snap, Play Store, etc.. None of the apps that you are used to will be available to Huawei phones.

And it's "substitute" Play Store is malware-infested (Aptoid) and it's OS (to replace Android) will be very buggy.

(And of course, anything that you do on the phone is linked back to China and whoever Huawei decides to let in to comb your data.)

The ONLY thing P30P is better is in low light PHOTOgraphy. Daytime pics are orange-nish due to the filter that they use (RYYB sensor). RYYB sensor is great in low-light but has color accuracy issue during daytime pics.

Now, once you do VIDEO, your XS Max is leap and bound far ahead of Huawei's best. It is not even close here. Smart HDR on video is a game-changer for iPhone.

I think you've missed the point about 'forums'.

Totally agree with you about video - XS is much better in that regard, but you're wrong to say low light photography is the ONLY think that's better about the P30P. Speed is also objectively superior. I'll not go on, or I'll be called a shill for Huawei (such is the level of online conversation these days), but when you've actually had a hands-on with it, you go back to your XS a bit underwhelmed by how it performs.

Speed...doubtful. A12 molests Kirin 980. 60-FPS gaming on XS Max. Not even close on Huawei.

And with iOS 13 around the corner, speed on XS Max will be much better....especially the animations will be a lot faster.

Definitely, but then the next Samsung/Google/Huawei will be around that corner, so it's a circular argument. What I'm getting at is that the P30 Pro seems to have upped the game to such an extent, in terms of speed and photography, I no longer have confidence that Apple will be able to catch it in September.

I'll wait - the amount Apple is charging for their best phones means they've lost my annual business so it'll be 2020 before I'd consider upgrading, but that's such a long wait, other models will be tempting in the meantime, given the gulf in quality has been significantly shortened.

In terms of hardware, the P30 clearly exceeds what Apple has to offer. In terms of innovation, I think Apple will continue to fall behind. When Apple faces less competition in the U.S., there will be less pressure to innovate.

The fact that Apple will be copying the triple camera arrangement, square bump, and reverse charging tells you the level of influence Huawei has had.

I have a P30 Pro and it does indeed blow the iPhone XS Max our the water in some aspects such as:

- Battery Life, easily outlasts my Max.
- Charging, 40W Charger included in the box, I can wake up with 30% battery, plug it in, go shower, get ready for work and by the time I am going to eat breakfast it’s at 100% and ready for another 1.5days
- Camera Zoom, Night Mode, Wide Angle and Super Macro Mode, it does 5x Optical Zoom and 10x Hybrid, you get a clear close up of objects you would not even think you could. The wide angle is great for fitting a lot more into a frame and the Super Macro Mode allows you to photograph very closely and fine detail on anything such as plants. The camera is incredibly versatile, it’s a real Swiss Army Knife. Finally the Night Mode pretty much owns ANY mobile device out there, even the smallest bit of light will allow it to create light in a dark room scene, it is simply amazing and definitely something I would have expected Apple to come up with as it is quite literally magical.

As for the XS Max:
- It takes better regular pictures and is more consistent, one of the best Portrait Modes I have seen in a phone, the colors are also more balanced and natural with the iPhone.
- Software is simply better on the iPhone and this is what keeps me using my XS Max as my main device. Apps like Instagram, Twitter, my banking app, Snapchat, Uber etc... just seem to run better on the iPhone, also the iPhone notifications are much faster and more reliable.
- iOS ecosystem is just great, I have an iPad and sending files between it, my MacBook Air and my iPhone with AirDrop is such a pleasure, it makes the standard WiFi Direct in Android seem a little dated even these seem to share the same tech.
- The iPhone has the better display, the XS Max Display has a higher PPI and is smoother and sharper, also seems brighter and I am loving home the XS Max is wider with no curves as it makes it easier to type and more of the screen is usable.

That is overall my take on the two devices.

The P30 Pro is a Hardware Beast, it has everything but the kitchen sink, but the iPhone has the better software, more consistent user experience and a better build overall.

It really is down to what you need, you cannot go wrong with either device no matter what any iFan or Fandroid will tell you, both are such awesome devices.

I have both, despite the difference in chips, the Huawei is ludicrously fast, some apps take longer in the one than the other, but getting around the UI, the P30P certainly gives the XS Max a run for its money.

We’ll see what iOS 13 brings, Android Q is also landing soon on the P30 Pro so we will see how both run.

Well, as of right now, according to Phonebuff, XS is faster than P30P.

Not really...XS will get faster. Huawei OS has not been kind to older hardware. So, future OS updates will likely not increase much.

And the Galaxy S10+ is the fastest phone according to the same YouTube channel

When you actually have the phones in hand you really cannot tell the difference, I have used my bosses S10 and between the 3 there is not much. As I said before one will be faster than the other in some functions, but nothing mind blowing, what wins for the iPhone, IMO, is iOSs more mature and complete feeling, it’s a lot more consistent overall.

Hardware? Camera is where you can make THAT argument. Other than that, iPhone has better processor, better display, better materials (316L SS, sapphire), and better design.

And add to above...iPhone has much much much much better resale value, better support, and better longevity.

Right. Actually 1+ is #1, S10+ #2. Apple #3. Huawei #5.

So, speed is not a win for Huawei. I would argue the opposite.

And then you add in 60 FPS gaming....

Nobody said speed was a win for Huawei bud, these things are all so fast you really have to nitpick, end of the day they are all fast and will vary as you use them, in the real world.

Gaming is definitely better on the iPhone, that is without a question, even the gaming Androids simply do not compare at all, that is an area iOS continues to rule with an iron fist.

Is the iPhones sapphire really sapphire? it seems to be a combination of things, it easily scratched like normal gorilla glass, so I’d say that point is mute, however the iPhones Stainless Steel is a definite win, the XS Max feels like a tank, I absolutely love how it feels in hand and yes the Display is far better in the XS Max.

But we are not going to dilute where the P30 Pro or Galaxy S10+ and OnePlus 7 Pro win.

It’s a beautiful time to be alive, you cannot go wrong with any flagship depending one what you need there a lot of options.

Respecting privacy is nothing more than a marketing term these days, that includes Apple.

It’s sad that the privacy thing is really all apple truly excell at these days. It seems to be the argument that gets pulled out every time a new flagship android is released with superior innovation going on. Imo, apple stopped innovating a long time ago and let others pick up the slack. Apple tend to cherry pick the better bits/features of other smartphone manufacturers and spend time perfecting it, so it often appears that apple are ahead or innovating. Sadly the reality is that someone usually did it first and apple simply made it better. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that. It works! But it’s not lost on me that some manufacturers are well ahead before apple get on board and ride a particular gravy train.

Absolutely.

And perhaps what is more concerning for Apple is how good the competition has become at things Apple were known to be good at.

Apple are very lucky that a lot of the time the Android OEMs are dependent on Google releasing the OS and hopefully it’s compatible with the top hardware they are putting in, lately the Android OEMs have become especially good at ensuring they polish their Software and make it faster, to the point where iPhones are no longer dominating speed tests or battery tests, but just benchmark apps.

Apple need to double down on their Hardware/Software advantage now more than ever before. Their iOS 13 optimizations such as reducing app sizes and making the FaceID, OS+plus apps faster is a move the right direction, as well as their bigger focus on security with things like Sign in with Apple.

The beauty in Apple is that they still have full control of both Hardware and Software over everyone, even over Google, who are still finding their feet after the HTC acquisition. They need to really push on this part and start moving forward with more top Hardware.

Nothing, I believe, is really stopping Apple from throwing in 4000mAh batteries in their Plus/Max models and simply obliterating Android competition in battery life, even if they decide to put a 18W charger in the phone and then continuing to focus on their top Software. I think that alone can have people switching over at an even higher rate.

I am sure Apple are feeling the pressure and will move in some areas like Battery (incl. charging), Camera and network support (5G) somewhere between now and late 2020.

Innovation for the wrong reason or when tech is not mature can be embarrassing. See folding phones from Huawei and Samsung.

FaceID remains class leading. How about their processor prowess? How about class leading video capability??

Sure iPhone PHOTOgraphy may not be class leading in all category.....but you gotta admit, it is CONSISTENTLY good in almost all scenarios.

As for sapphire, it is not scratched but the thin lens gets fractured microscopically. You just don’t see report of iPhone camera lens getting scratched. Go to any Android forum and you see threads about it.

Never experienced Camera lens scratch on any Android I owned, then again I put cases on my smartphones like most people do. I know it was a thing for the LG V20 back in 2016 with cracking.

Which particular Android in 2018/2019 is having a lens scratch issue? Didn’t know it was as widespread as you are claiming.

Anyway this is going far off what OP asked.

OP if you want to give the P30 Pro a go, try it out!
