I have an XS Max and love it. It's a brilliant phone, and is still going very strong. I look forward to that continuing now that Apple aren't deliberately slowing down phones older than 12 months for whatever reason they tried to justify doing that.
However - my girlfriend recently purchased a Huawei P30 Pro, and in many ways, it leaves the Max in the dust. That's not surprising given the rate of technology - every few months, the best phone will be bettered, but the difference in camera between these two phones is absolutely insane.
It's made me consider - for the first time since the iPhone 3G - leaving the iPhone and exploring something new. It feels like other manufacturers aren't just dabbling in things that Apple end up doing better, but are legitimately getting there first with a superior product.
Has anyone else played with something that gives them pause for thought like this?
I have a P30 Pro and it does indeed blow the iPhone XS Max our the water in some aspects such as:
- Battery Life, easily outlasts my Max.
- Charging, 40W Charger included in the box, I can wake up with 30% battery, plug it in, go shower, get ready for work and by the time I am going to eat breakfast it’s at 100% and ready for another 1.5days
- Camera Zoom, Night Mode, Wide Angle and Super Macro Mode, it does 5x Optical Zoom and 10x Hybrid, you get a clear close up of objects you would not even think you could. The wide angle is great for fitting a lot more into a frame and the Super Macro Mode allows you to photograph very closely and fine detail on anything such as plants. The camera is incredibly versatile, it’s a real Swiss Army Knife. Finally the Night Mode pretty much owns ANY mobile device out there, even the smallest bit of light will allow it to create light in a dark room scene, it is simply amazing and definitely something I would have expected Apple to come up with as it is quite literally magical.
As for the XS Max:
- It takes better regular pictures and is more consistent, one of the best Portrait Modes I have seen in a phone, the colors are also more balanced and natural with the iPhone.
- Software is simply better on the iPhone and this is what keeps me using my XS Max as my main device. Apps like Instagram, Twitter, my banking app, Snapchat, Uber etc... just seem to run better on the iPhone, also the iPhone notifications are much faster and more reliable.
- iOS ecosystem is just great, I have an iPad and sending files between it, my MacBook Air and my iPhone with AirDrop is such a pleasure, it makes the standard WiFi Direct in Android seem a little dated even these seem to share the same tech.
- The iPhone has the better display, the XS Max Display has a higher PPI and is smoother and sharper, also seems brighter and I am loving home the XS Max is wider with no curves as it makes it easier to type and more of the screen is usable.
That is overall my take on the two devices.
The P30 Pro is a Hardware Beast, it has everything but the kitchen sink, but the iPhone has the better software, more consistent user experience and a better build overall.
It really is down to what you need, you cannot go wrong with either device no matter what any iFan or Fandroid will tell you, both are such awesome devices.
