Funny Thing Is...

Funny thing is Apple, for many years, used pictures of cluttered, over wired, over accessorized PCs sitting next to virgin white uncluttered Macs for their marketing. They even compared the inside of a typical PC to the inside of the Mac Pro.

Now look where they're headed....

With the future release of the new MP... we are no doubt going to see CREATIVE professionals doing some pretty creative things with their workstation / studio rigs / setups... Functionally and Aesthetically :D

Buying a PC is not particularly creative. :D

What does a Cowbell sound like throttled through thunderbolt? I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more bandwidth [than 2GBps]!

Thunderbolt2 is as much bandwidth in one plug as the DMI interface that connects the CPU to the platform hub. A platform hub that hosts all seven internal drives, all USB ports, all FireWire ports, all wired and wireless network interfaces on the current Mac Pro.

If thunderbolt is a bottleneck surely the old system is lacking as well.

I'm yet to find a TB enclosure that can hold a 5.25" and 4x HDDs.

Anyone want to find me an AiO TB solution?

Ahhh.. we're coming full circle. Back in the good old day (say 15 years ago), you could buy 4-6 bay SCSI towers that held 5.25" drives (3.5 if you used an adapter). I used to have a SCSI CD burner, and several SCSI HDD in it.

Yes!

Hey, that almost looks like my desk! I hide it behind the monitor or just plain ignore the mess.

In my case replacing a 5,1 with a 6,1 would result in the following being added to the desk;

Mac Pro 6,1
Mercury Rack Pro (I use individual drives, not raid)
power cord to Rack Pro
USB 3 cord to Rack Pro
Optical drive box
USB 3 cord to optical drive
power supply for optical drive box
iPhone dock, couldn't sit on Mac Pro any longer
NewTek HD toaster thing, also couldn't sit on Mac Pro
That leaves two USB ports, one for keyboard, one for iPhone, printer loses.

The above is not as severe as the OP's picture but I get pictures (and don't care much for the new "Mac Pro".
