there has been a lot of talk about PS3 Media Server in a few threads lately, so i thought i would start a dedicated thread.
here you can post your issues, settings and whatnot to try to troubleshoot any specific problems you are having with playing back movies/music over your network
i have attached my transcoding settings below, i have gigabit ethernet running direct from my iMac->PS3, so i have chosen to use lossless MPEG for video playback. bluray rips look amazing!
you dont have to worry about cross over cables with macs

nope, apple computers have auto sensing ethernet adaptors that allows them to change what direction/wire to send the packets onAt the time there was only a few network clients, my 2 airport expresses, hooked up. My PS3 is hard wired to the AEBSn as is my iMac. But if I plugged directly into the iMac, wouldnt I need a crossover cable?
when the movie was playing, did you happen to check the mbps rate of the video? the PS3 only has 802.11g, max playback you can get it somewhere around 25mb/s from real world experience.. maybe it has something to do with that?Im not sure what the deal was though, I havent had a chance to test it again today, I will in an hour or so when my kids take a nap. But I was even having stuttering on m4v files, which leads me to believe it WAS network related since that is a native file type of the PS3 there is no transcoding involved. I want to get this stable so I can enjoy it without worrying about this next time. Its one thing to have a stutter when watching a movie with my wife, but its almost embarrassing when I have company over.
hmm not sure how to check the activity of all clients at once, individually you have to go to each computer and check network usage from a program such as Activity Monitor or a widget such as iStat.Im still fairly new to Macs (about 2 years now). I know how to check my network clients (using Airport Utility) but Im really not sure how to check traffic and activity. Any tips would be appreciated.
i would actually love to get into network administration, thats what my major is at uni currently (one year left). would love to learn a few thingsI actually know a fair amount about networking but on a larger scale like CCNA stuff, but Im not to sure how to optimize my home network to make this more reliable.
