This thread is an excellent initiative. Once I've shaken myself out of a current PowerBook 12" multiple teardown/reassembly stupor - (to be enlarged on in a later post), I'll give Puma an airing on a TiBook which I've not fired up for many months.
Thanks for the very useful links you've provided here. :)

I can't recall exactly so I won't edit the post, but does Classilla work on 10.1?

Thanks. It’s very rare to find compatible software for these early OS X revisions. Something like the old versiontracker website would have been a perfect resource for decking out an older OS, but it seems information about old software is few and far between.

There was a time when you could load up almost endless shareware, freeware and commercial apps for any OS X.

Puma was a fairly major bugfix and feature update for 10.0 which was also provided for free to users of the initial Cheetah release. So I’m not sure if there would be much reason to do a Cheetah thread. But, we should definitely do a Jaguar 10.2 thread too.

So I’m not sure if there would be much reason to do a Cheetah thread.
More to the point, virtually nothing runs on Cheetah except the stock apps that came with it. Apple seems to have released it as a learning tool, fully expecting users to do all their productivity work on OS9.

Camino 0.8.5 can be added to the Web Browsers / FTP section.

Microsoft Office X v10.1.9 can be added to the Office / Productivity section.

Macromedia Studio MX (2002):
  • Dreamweaver MX
  • Fireworks MX
  • Flash MX
  • FreeHand 10
can be added to the Office / Productivity section.

(I can't edit the first post yet.)

Is Camino still safe to use ? Just seems 104Fox is too slow.

I don't think internet security is ever going to be a realistic thing with these old operating systems. Being safe online just comes down to your actions. I imagine Camino 0.8.5 will be just as "safe" as Firefox 1.0.8, by which I mean not at all. Classilla is probably the safest choice for Puma and as it runs through Classic, it could possibly protect OS X that little bit by not dealing directly with the active user login system. TenFourFox is definitely the safest option for Tiger.

Keep browsing simple. Avoid using too many sites which require you to login. Avoid shady or questionable websites. Don't even think about online banking. Forget about trying to login to Facebook. You won't want to use it to make any online purchases or transactions, period. Stick to perusing simple download sites like the Macintosh Garden and forums that still load and render.

I guess you need to treat the browser on an old OS in a way which resembles the time period in which it was designed. Anything beyond basic CSS text and image formatting just won't display properly.

You can always jump onto IRC with a Ircle or something similar and relive chatroom days of the past. Or try to find an active BBS server if they still exist. :)

Thanks. I've added these to the wiki post and also Photoshop 7 under "Graphics & Design".

My latest PowerBook PDQ acquisition (233Mhz G3 with 256MB RAM) is now running Puma 10.1.5 and Mac OS 9.2.2 on a tiny 2GB HDD. With a few of these apps it can at least hum along in OS X and still be reasonably productive. It is fun to challenge yourself with something like Puma to see how much you still can do on a relatively bare-minimum setup.

I had a play with various Puma betas a couple of years ago (in QEMU as I lacked a compatible Mac at the time so cannot comment on performance) and found an interesting login window in one of them:

It says 'Version 10.0' in About This Mac and System Profiler, which none of the other Puma betas I played with did. Also, there's nothing in terms of menu extras, not even a clock (it can be enabled but won't show) so the right corner of the menu bar is barren:

Ok, is it possible fo me to run Puma on a DLSD G4 Powerbook ?

It will unofficially run 10.3.9 if installed and updated on another machine :)

Well well well... In that case, you could definitely run Puma on a DLSD via Mac-on-Mac. I have MOM/MOL installed and running a Puma vm at native speeds on my 1.5Ghz PBG4 15” SLSD which is running 10.3.9. Puma boots really fast in the vm and is usable like this for running some older software. But given Mac-On-Mac never got past the alpha stage, audio, networking and graphics acceleration are not available. Despite this, it does run well.

Check my post on Mac-On-Mac on The Panther Thread.

Added link to EyeTV.
Added BootCD, Deimos Racing, FCP, Mactracker, OmniDictionary, OmniDiskSweeper, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, OmniWeb, Pacifist.
Added Xserve to supported hardware; excluded post-Jaguar iBook models from supported hardware.

Had a go at making the first post more consistent in style with the other OS-specific posts.

I actually have Puma on two different computers at the moment, a 600 MHz 2001 iBook, and a Power Mac 9600 (with the original 604e). This thread is is very useful!

I did try putting Puma on my TiBook 867 MHz (shipped with Jaguar) but got a kernel panic. Might try booting a fully updated install using TDM though.

What's Puma's performance like on these two?

That kernel panic may be due to Puma not recognising the PowerBook3,5 identifier; try spoofing a PowerBook3,4 in OF. But yeh, make sure the install is fully updated. This is why I use Puma Server 10.1.5 shipped with the original Xserve G4: It's newer than 10.1.5 client and contains additional kexts.
