Again, it's a nothing term. Retina is apple marketing at it's finest. A term to herd the uneducated to the "garden"

Herd the uneducated to the garden? My god lol.
Yes, not you. or I, but people who just shop for a computer and believe all the wiz bang marketing that apple spews. The best was their M1 presnetation with the nothing graph with bright colors, and the claim of faster than 95 percent of computer. That one was laugh out loud funny.

I hate to tell you, but you realize that Apple isn't pulling these marketing phrases out of thin air. Sure, the graphs are nonsense, just as all the "we are the best most beautiful everything company" talk. But they also deliver. So I really don't understand where your hate against Apple comes from.
I think they almost screwed up over the last years with their MacBooks, butterfly keyboard, TouchBar, software quality, just to name a few. But I think they are back on track now. Using their own silicon might be the way.

I think other companies are much worse with their marketing in the end, the Dolby Atmos label is a good example.

Of that, there is no doubt. It just simply works and ties in better with their software/hardware. It just needs developers to really get on board. For what it is the M1 Mac Mini has been working incredibly well for me and thus far presented zero performance issues. In fact, allowing me to do so much more than the previous gen ever did.

Apple is still on my **** list after the butterfly keyboard and other things but seeing some redemption.

Well said. Apple needs to get the next-gen MacBook Pros GREAT again. ;) If the next MacBooks Pros have the following then in MY books they are great:
* More than 2TB/USB4 ports
*SD Card, HDMI and MagSafe
*MiniLED panel like the 12.9" iPad Pro or better
*A better M1(more GPU cores and CPU cores)
*32GB RAM option

The screen on MacBooks have always been outstanding but HDR needs to happen and it looks to be happening.

There is a big factor why 3K> greater displays are not standard on laptops because BATTERY LIFE and guess what Apple Silicon solves that issue on MacBooks.

I FULLY expect the 16" MacBook Pro to get the title as the world's longest battery life in a laptop, if it retains the 99w
battery. As apple Silicon is very efficient.

4k on a 15" inch laptop (never mind a 13") is a waste. The display is too small for such a high resolution - you're wanting to have even more?
I would disagree. I had a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 7th gen with 4K display, and it was by far the best laptop screen I'd ever used. The only problem is it was such an energy drain that I got only 2 hours of battery life!

Because I think they are full of themselves with their holy'er than thou crowing. They are leaving chargers out of the box for "environmental" reasons, blah blah blah. it's so they can charge you if you need one. NO other reason. Their claims of privacy and security are a load of BS too. Every day more news comes out about leaks of iOS and apple not closing them up. Not to mention "FloC". Apple came out swinging at google for that one, turns out Apple were doing it behind users back all along. They are full of crap with their marketing bull and suckers fall for it. Me included with iOS. I was using iPhone and iPad as they were claiming to be more secure. NOPE. It's no better than android, it's just apple tells users it is and they take it as gospel.

Yes, they are. The macbook is NOT faster than 95% of all other computers. That's 100% bull.

They really lost me as a Mac user over the last years. First they abandoned the Nvidia GPU in the 2014 15" MBP I was using and performance went down the drain. Then I got a 2019 15" and that was the worst Mac I ever used. So here I am using a ThinkPad (and wow do I hate Windows now).

They also had a lot of software quality issues on Macs. Some MacOS releases were hilariously bad.

I sticked to iOS and iPad OS though, these are fantastic products all around. And there is no competition imo. I really hope I can return to MacOS with the upcoming MacBook Pros. I hope Apple learned their lesson. We will see

Agreed, although Big Sur appeared a much better experience for me compared to Mojave and Catalina. I think they did learn and put more into the software now.

All good so far with M1, not really impressed with the 24" iMac but I see the target market. More interested now to see what comes on the 14/16" MBP and the larger 30"+ iMac, all of which should gain a new CPU/GPU and the option for more than 16GB RAM.

Well, Apple has been certainly exaggerating at the marketing terms, to the point that not only I do not know if they are true but also I am having a hard time figuring out what they relate to.

Retina Display was OK. It was not a specific screen resolution but it meant something, it was fine.

Now the iPad Pro has a "Liquid Retina" display, with "True Tone" and "ProMotion" technology, a 16-core "Neural Engine", "Focus Pixels" "TrueDepth" camera, with wide color capture for "Live Photos", good for "Animoji" and "Memoji", and with a "Retina Flash". It also comes with "Face ID" and "LiDAR Scanner". And it has features such as "VoiceOver" and "AssistiveTouch".

And the iPhone 12 Pro has a "Super Retina XDR" display with "True Tone" and "Haptic Touch", a next-gen "Neural Engine", "LiDAR Scanner", "Depth Control", cameras with "Brighter True Tone" flash with "Slow Sync", "Night Mode", "Deep Fusion", 100% "Focus Pixels", "Apple ProRAW", "QuickTake" video, "Animoji", "Memoji", "Portrait Lightning", "Retina Flash", and has features such as "Face ID", "FaceTime" audio and video, comes with "Apple Pay", "Voice Control", "VoiceOver", "AssistiveTouch", "Speak Screen", "Back Tap", and supports "4K HDR AirPlay".

Many of these terms are useful and helpful, and some of them are self-explanatory, but I have no idea what some of them mean. And I wonder how many more marketing terms Apple will come up with when it releases the new MacBook. I can no longer keep track of them all.

It seems that now Apple has to invent a different marketing term for every new feature they put in each product. Those are not market standards and I suppose you would soon have to become an Apple specialist to know what every term means.

This bit is true, the M1 Macbook IS faster than 95% of windows LAPTOPS in its CLASS. That's what apple said in their keynote. The M1 is one of the best 15W out there, it beats the latest 11th gen 15W Intel i7 chip.

The 5% is AMD's Zen 2/3 CPUs where they have higher multicore pref and are also 15W watts.

According to Apple, "in MacBook Air, M1 is faster than the chips in 98 percent of PC laptops sold in the past year". And a footnote reads as follows: "Testing conducted by Apple in October 2020 using preproduction 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with Apple M1 chip and 16GB of RAM. Performance measured using select industry-standard benchmarks. PC configurations from publicly available sales data over the last 12 months. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of MacBook Pro."

It is curious that Apple refers to the MacBook Air in the text, but mentions that the MacBook Pro was used for the benchmarks. The statement by Apple can be found here: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/11/introducing-the-next-generation-of-mac/.

So, according to Apple, the M1 MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM is faster than 98% PC laptops (of any category) sold in 2019 (which was the year prior to the launch of the M1 MacBook Pro).

Regardless of whether Apple used "selective" benchmarks, this statement sounds very much possible to me as:
  • in 2019, the vast majority of laptops carried 8th generation Intel Core processors or earlier (there were very few 9th generation Intel Core processors released, and the 10th generation would only be released by the end of the year); and
  • the vast majority of PC laptops sold are low-end (and Apple did not specify whether it was considering laptops sold in the U.S. or worldwide; laptops sold outside the U.S. are generally lower-end); and
  • the benchmarks used a MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM, while the models shipped by Apple as standard have only 8 GB (which means that the M1 MacBook Pro model will only be faster than 98% of PC laptops sold in 2019 if upgraded to 16 GB RAM).
So, Apple is basically comparing a custom $1,499+ M1 MacBook Pro released in November 2020 with PC laptops sold at any price (some lower than $300) during Jan-Dec 2019, nearly all of them carrying an architecture released in 2017 or earlier. I would be surprised if the results were any different, especially with M1 being such a great processor.

Yeah this is actually one of those times the marketing jargon isn’t heavily sugar-coated. I mean, in a sense the laptop CPU domination is worse than with phones or tablets - plenty of Android phones are highly efficient and fast enough. The cortex A78 used in several Snapdragons is great for ex.

Yes, you are right. The "environmental reasons" is just part of the story. I suppose one of the reasons is that Apple never wanted to bear the additional costs of including a Lightning to USB-C adapter inside every iPhone box (so it kept the regular Lightning to USB-A ports even after removing all USB-A parts from MacBooks). And, if Apple were removing chargers due to environmental reasons only, they would have dropped the price accordingly. Apple of course wants to increase the margins, and opportunity is perfect for it.

Apart from that, as I mentioned, the M1 MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM is reportedly 98% faster than all PC laptops sold in 2019. Which should be no surprise at all. Apple carefully chose the most favorable benchmarks and is comparing a $1500 laptop released in Nov 2020 with a brand-new architecture to all PC laptops, of any price, sold between Jan-Dec 2019, most of them with processors released before 2018. Intel is not the only one to select the most convenient benchmarks, but apparently it is not so good at getting away with it as Apple is.

One thing MacBook's always had better was the displays, battery life and speakers.
Now windows laptops with OLED have better displays.

My take is if Apple puts the miniLED from the iPad pros in the next gen MacBook's we are in for a treat and MacBook's will again be in the VERY top tier for laptop displays.

Apples panels always have a HIGH DPI compared to windows laptops which is what I want

@Steve Adams, you can **** on Apple's marketing terms but they do deliver in display quality. I look at the tech behind it, not just "ooh, retina then its good". No I analyze and keep marketing mumbo jumbo out and judge the display on what is and not what Apple says.

Still, I am very excited for the iPad Pro mainly cause of the display because that tech is going into the MacBook.

I am critical of Apple yes but I do enjoy their hardware.

I am not 100% sure that OLED displays in Windows laptops are actually better than the ones in MacBooks. I have seen some 15-inch Dell XPS with OLED displays and they look absolutely amazing and jaw-dropping, blowing away everything else. But I wonder whether the screen is too reflective.

Looking at my code with a dark theme or the terminal is glorious on my OLED screen. I really hope mini led screens will at least come close to that.

there
has anyone tried Linux elementary OS?
this is supposed to be designed for a MacBook especially for our friend, RETINA!

yesterday while cycling into macro island (in very south florida) over a bridge, 4 dolphins were jumping and swimming in east marcos bay. what else would anyone else do but take out anything with a camera, like an iphone, right?
after trying to log on with the fingerprint, (no use) then typing the code 3 times then trying to get to "Camera" an dnot "photos" and skipping the signing into icloud (which is in the middle of downgrading from 50GB) the time the camera was activate was over 2 minutes.
the photos and video came out horrible all because apple wanted me to log into icloud with persistent demands of signing in while stopping the video.
this is apple and what they become for a while now and they will never stop.

sorry for the outburst,
and happy they dont make devices and cars were one's life is a stake if they are not logged into that device.

Linux with high dpi screens is "ok" (depends on the desktop environment) when you use an integer based scaling, and becomes a total disaster when you try to use fractional scaling. If you want it totally messed up, make sure to use a Nvidia GPU and screens with different scaling.

tl;dr Linux is stuck in the digital stone-age in regards of high dpi screens

I mean, I am not a defender of Apple but that just seems like nonsense. I can be taking a video in 8 seconds if I wanted, just tested. Fingerprint does not work, 3 times entering the code wrong, downgrading from 50GB...

this lol. You don't even need to unlock an iPhone to take a video with it.
