I don’t know. The enthusiast tech in me... would love to try that out. But I don’t think it’s practical nor efficient when using it compared to folding.
Sliding mechanism are appropriate when it comes to saving valuable space… for instance pulling out a large screen panel from a drawer or blinds, maybe even for keyboard trays. I recall seeing the slide out pop-up of the camera from Oppo… which didn’t lead to anywhere.
Give me sleek Galaxy Fold in a Pixel Fold aspect ratio… with silo for an S-Pen, camera technology on par with the S-23U… Google photographic computational and video prowess coming from Apple. Oh yeah, Oppo Find N2 hinge to allow for better crease elimination… then perfection has been reached.
Pontificate this ...remember that Tom Cruise movie Minority Report?
There was a scene on the subway where a single, foldable, digital newspaper was being read. Newspaper size foldable and readable on all 4 sides.
There was another acene I forgot when where a handheld device was expanded ONLY when needed. Many other sci-fi movies featured similar devices that are pocketful.
Reason why this works over foldables:
Smaller dimensions on the X/Y access.
Larger batteries can be used.
Absolutely no creases at all, nor support needed to create the illusion of no creases, cause the screen is not being folded, yet bent within much better tolerances.
Less moving parts - think under 20 not under 53 as an achievement.
No out of thr box finite limation on screen size,e when open.
You could have a 7.3" or 12.4" unrolled screen in a phone thr size of an Samsung Galaxy S23 - and it can be variable! You the end user chooses the application of screen size when needed: wider for desktop like environments, more narrow for mobile use cases.
That is the beauty- desktop mode without the need for an external screen or add them when you need them in addition NOT as a priority for every desktop mode use.
Humans vision is acute to wide-screen not portrait. Samsung is THE only company pushing rollable screens.
Trust when foldable screens semi glass becomes as reliable as slabs - take a handful of sand ans grit and pour onto thr screen and rub VERY vigorously with complete confidence ans still no damage and can rinse off without a second whim , then rollables will begin to debut. What you saw are very early concept prototypes.
