From my reading, leather can come from many different types of animals. Cheaper brands can use leather (genuine and top grain for sure!) from stray cats or dogs. From the HOCO review of knock-off of Apple's classic band above, you can see that lug connector loop (where leather band attaches to it) is too wide...allowing for the leather band to slide back and forth sideways (lateral play).

Sorry to keep on picking on P&Q, but if they have no interest in improving their very flawed product, then why are people fecommending them???? It is not like they are $25 and thus you can forgive their bad design or unwillingness to fix a problem. From the pics, P&Q is downright a ripoff.
Really cats and dogs? That is crazy.

A lot of times, the stiffness is due to the cheap padding that they use to stuff the band (to make it look manly thick!). Leather layer in itself is usually thin and is NOT stiff. Now, if you're talking full thickness grain leather, then maybe...maybe.

A lot of these leather are processed like crazy...so, leather conditioners are worthless and may even damage the color. This is why Hermes NEVER recommend conditioners. (Hermes do service their leather in their own "spa".). Apple only recommends damp cloth. My wife's LV purse also recommends to stay away from 3rd party stuff.

Sad but true...esp those cheap China leather bands.

Yeah I have never used conditioners on my leather stuff. I agree the stiff bands usually are the cheap ones. How hard is it to make a quality band?

That is disgusting. Won't be buying those ever.

I have not found one that equals the quality of the classic buckle. Love to know if there are any, but none were as soft and flexible.

Can't really comment on how those are. I have the Space Black and I hate that the only band that seems to be made for it is the black sport band with black pin.

Got what I got because of the choice of black adapters and buckles. These are pretty soft.

Yeah I can understand that. Maybe if you could find some black lugs you could get the CB.

So you don't think the classic buckle looks or smells like leather? I thought it did smell like leather. And yeah I don't know how P&Q can ask for $99 from a product that is so flawed. One hole is way too tight, and the other is way to big. In my mind the CB is just so much better.

In terms of breaking in the leather. I totally understand, but when it's something you are wearing on your wrist all day. Being uncomfortable is miserable. I think they need to think about that when they make these bands.

Sorry, I don't share your thoughts and conclusion.Compared to the market and other brands, I think P&D is reasonable prized. (where Nomad is too expensive). The Apple Classic Buckle is only cheap in comparison to the Modern Buckle, just saying. On smell, my nose mus be spoiled by the Hermès band As an experience just put your nose in the leather interior of a Kia or a Audi and smell the difference..

On breaking in I can tell you that I have some Church shoes and it took months to finally give me some comfort. The P&Q rev 2 is thinner and softer so that might be an advantage.

Yeah I understand. I think they are all over priced including the CB.

Yeah I just don't want to try to break a band in.

I was just about to write, that it really sucks that Apple doesn't have a space black option for the classic buckle. Just the exact same bands but choosing adaptors

Why go through all that trouble? Already have black leather band with classic-style buckle.

I'll just assume Apple didn't want my money ;)

Same thought here, but rumours say there will be some Space Black lovin' here in March for the press meeting... Fingers crossed.

What band is this black one?

That band is the charcoal band, with black adapters and black buckles, from Arrow and Board.

Maybe they'll have something new, but if not, it might just be too late for me. Already have a nice Moko black Milanese, that nice blacked-out classic buckle above, and a 4th black link bracelet that's being delivered in a matter of hours.

I really don't understand some of their decisions. Like, no leather loops for 38 mm, no modern buckle for 42 mm. Then there's the adapter color issue I've mentioned.

Yeah I'm with you on that. I get that some stuff like the modern buckle is targeted for the more ladie sized watch but don't get the leather loop at all... And really don't get the no Space Black love - would have been very easy for them to make a small drop down with Black/Clear steel for the classic buckle

if anybody is interested, the Pad & Quill band rev 1 is on sale at ETSY. https://www.etsy.com/shop/PadandQui...r=date_desc&view_type=gallery&ref=shop_search

Personally I am done with Pad & Quill as they refuse to say what is the difference between rev 1 and rev 2... Well there is now quite a price difference. Horrible support from them, very kind but not not answering my questions...

You can tell that they rushed the product out and don't give a crap about how it looks. Overpriced junk.

Yeah, but see, I've seen several ladies around here with the 42.

As for dark-colored ornaments on the band for Space Black watches, I don't understand. I believe I remember seeing the Space Gray watch seemed to be the most popular. That would justify some dark adapters too, but nooooo.

Come on, be reasonable, it is not junk and now with the ETSY sale price for rev 1 certainly not over priced. ;)

My point is that their support are not able to tell me any detail about the difference between rev 1 and rev 2. If you like it or not with a small wrist size of about 150mm the band is really ok. Certainly compared to the much more expensive bands (like Apple's)

I am not going to say it's junk, but I will say the Apple bands are better.

$60 is the price, right? Apple CB leather may not be worth $150, but at least the DESIGN and fit & finish are impeccable.

P&Q has what in its favor? Design, bad...one look at the way the buckle sits on your wrist tells that it was designed by an INexperienced company/people. Their lack of change signals a company lacking flexibility and/or resources. Never try to copy Apple buckle design if you cannot match its features.

Fit & finish, moving on from buckle...you have leather too thick at lug end...causing it to rub against the watch body. The sides of the leather rubs against the lug connector loop. Neither of this will bold well for long term use...causing stress on leather and discoloration.

Look at the holes...poor definition! How did they make the holes? With a pencil?! :D And because of the poor "holing" you have stress cracks on the leather where the holes are made! It may mean that P&Q uses a blunt tool to make hole or poor leather quality/treatment. There is no reason why there are cracks on leather around holes that are NOT used!

And then of course, you have the length issue where the two bands are not proportional.

Again, basic watch band making mistakes...I may be harsh, but I think that people need to stop calling P&Q a great bargain alternative to Apple bands. It is not.

And yes, I am picky! :)

Is the Apple Classic Buckle the only leather band you've seen up to your standards for the price?

For me, yes. However, I did have an issue with the side rubber coating coming off on the retainer loop on Apple Classic Buckle. So, it too is not perfect. But at least the design is flawless. Leather quality is fine...soft and smooth (in saddle brown). My issue may have been a rare issue since i have not seen others have the same issue.
