Is there some reason it has to sit flat on a desk, or can I stand it up on one edge? It might even look a lot better sandwiched between a couple of large books.

The current Mac mini can work sideways, so I’d imagine this could too. I don’t really see why it wouldn’t work?

I'm going to repost something I did from another thread, apologies...

I know this kind of looks like a Sonos Speaker like this but I quite enjoyed the G5 grille on the back, so why not bring it all the way around. This would ruin the airflow from the bottom though and probably compromise any structural integrity the top has! But we're playing fantasy Photoshop here, so why not ;)

I do appreciate design, that's one of things that I really like about Apple. While it's almost universally agreed that Apple went too far with thinness over everything else, I don't think that means their products can't still look beautiful in that generally minimalist style that is (and should remain) their signature.

I think the Studio is just plain looking - it's uninspired. As a MP 6,1 owner, and soon to be Studio owner, I remember those "can't innovate my ass" promo videos, and however one eventually felt about the 6,1, it certainly looked cool in that Apple way. However, the Studio, it's, well... fine. They didn't blow it, but they didn't blow me away either.

The internals OTOH, I'm super impressed. And cost is reasonable, and actually pretty fair for Apple prices. The Studio is a tremendously more powerful computer than the 6,1 for its day, and it starts $1,000 less than the 6,1 from 8 years ago, not even accounting for inflation (I think that probably says more about the 6,1 being way overpriced).

It is funny, but this is the internet after all... on a planet with over 7 billion people, there's always going to be enough Mac users on this forum to make it seem like lots of people are saying the same thing. As we all should know by now, literally no matter what Apple released, no matter what price, there are going to be disappointed folks.

How it sells will say a lot about how successful Apple was at figuring out their target market (and they might even discover that there are a lot of people who are going to buy this that aren't in their so-called target market).
It's always a pendulum. It's the function over form guys' time right now.

I've had several MacMinis over the years and I always had those out of the way and hidden. I probably won't be using the front ports or changing out cables in the back all that often so it really won't be seen. I suppose if I ever do have it in a more visible area on my desk then I may put a few stickers on it or after a while just get used to it being there.

I'm not sure what makes the Ultra an ugly sandwich box, but if so it's a good thing it's inside that opaque silver Mac Studio case.

On a more serious note, clearly this is a machine for creative people with black masking tape:

When you consider how clean the lines are and the lack of doo-dads, holes, cutouts, and edges on the Studio, I'm guessing the market for 3rd party wraps/cases/sleeves is going to be big.

It would have looked better with the Mac pros and XDR holes.

You are right, it is an ugly sandwich box. A sandwich box should be red, orange or blue and cuboid in shape, easy to open and packed with glutenous mundane floury offerings.

The mac studio looks pretty damn good to me, but all I am interested in outside its power, is the noise made.

I think it looks class - what will actually matter here is the finish. If it's done well, which I'm hopeful of, then it will elevate the desk.

If not, it will look like a a G Raid. Great in pics, ass in real life.

How about a mockup with the Mac Pro lattice?

EDIT: Looks like I was beaten to this suggestion.

This folks is why we can't have nice things. Apple finally releases the a midrange to high end desktop and the complaints come because it's more about function. Looks fine. I'm more interested in specs, ports and cooling.

Dead right. Short of real modularity which was always a bit of a pipedream at this price range / form factor, I think the Mac Studio is everything we've wanted in this range. Looking forward to mine arriving later this month!

I am seriously tempted to get a Studio because the performance is awesome and I’m ready to leave the iMac behind, but I agree with the OP that the form is uninspired. I was an owner of the G4 Cube and the trashcan Mac Pro, and I have very fond memories of those machines. They were a delight to see on one’s desk. But if I spring for this Mac Studio, I’ll probably hide it out of sight.

Agree - the Studio gives the market something many of us were conditioned into not expecting.

High end Mac performance without a screen or extortionate price tag.

This thing is a dream come true. Might take consumers a while to realise the value here.

Maybe they could have done something more iconic with the design, but I bet this thing looks beautiful on the desk, and will look multiples better than nearly any other desktop unit out there.

I'm sure Satechi will release a stacked usb dock/external drive holder, similar to the ones for the Mac mini. It should look pretty good with that.

That being said, once I add my two external drives, thunderbolt enclosure, audio interface, and cables and then mount it in my cabinet, I won't care what it looks like.

You're right there are always some people like this. Shame they don't realize how big of a moment this is for end users. People have been asking for this computer for ages which was a headless Mac for users who don't need workstation level Mac Pro specs but need something far better than the Mini.

However, they really missed it....this would have been super amazing if they used the trash can for the new studio. Heck, I'd pay a bit extra for that.
I would as well. It's great that we have now got better ports, but we still need amazing design.

We got amazing design. I expect the cooling will allow full non-throttled performance for both the MMS and the UMS since the increased case size over the Mac-mini can only be explained as a cooling feature (all the connectors would fit on the Mac mini case). And then they went farther by adding 2 additional pounds to the weight of the UMS to accommodate copper heat sinking instead of aluminum for the M1 Ultra's additional power dissipation.

Cosmetic beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but performance is achieved by engineering design. I think that design is beautiful.
