This thread is hilarious. There's a whole new war on MacRumors. Move aside, Android vs. iOS and Samsung vs. Apple.

The MacRumors Civil War is nigh.
I agree. It's as if these people think Apple is going to pick only one phone design and size, and they've asked this forum to choose for them. For heaven's sake, we have choices people. Who cares what and why somebody chose their iPhone model? It's THEIR choice.

Design is about how things work, not just how it looks. The Notch is a fine balance between maximum screen space and essential hardware.

I prefer to think of the ears as expanding real estate, instead of an intrusion.

Guess what? A touch screen on something is about how things look and usable/viewable space.
And it now looks terrible with part of the screen missing on the top.
The ears are ugly as hell.

We chose Apple. We are ALL winners at the end of the day!

We are? :D

No, the 8+ has much more usable space because the X is more rectangular then that of the 8+. In other words, X's width is narrower then the 8+.
I agree. And people who say the plus is too
“big” are just saying that because the new iPhone X only comes in one size. Had they made an X plus they would have been all over it. Lol....

Bingo!! Just wait till the X Plus drops and watch the bleating Tone shift dramatically.

Different strokes for different folks. That is all.

If a larger plus version comes next year and the notch goes and Touch ID returns it will make the X look a bad purchase.

Only ten months to find out hence why I wouldn’t touch the X as it doesn’t even have a full years tech cycle.
Perhaps, but for those like myself who love to get the latest flagship tech from Apple AND are on the iUP, it is a great purchase. I only “lease” my phone until the next one comes out. It is why I signed up for the iUP. So for me, the only bad purchase would have been to not get the X.

imo those people who keeps bring up 8 Plus is better than X are those folks who're trying to justify their purchases. no other way around it. X is clearly the flagship iphone, not even close. just like S8 and Note8 of Samsung, though two share most of the internal hardware, but it's clearly Note8 is a notch above S8 (no pun intended).
No. Some people are just incapable of acknowledging an opinion that differs from their own. Or, more accurately in many cases on this forum, people perpetuate an idiotic, hardware snobbery that doesn’t need to exist. Nobody apart from you needs to, or indeed does, care what phone you’re holding.

No, they’re saying it because the Plus is too big - for most people anyways. I own a Plus and it works fine for my huge hands. But it wouldn’t suit everybody.

annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd N0B0DY's @sking About Y0ur 0Pln1on,
Did you even read her comment??? You do realize that The Gen 2 is just like the iPhone 4 does it have 1GB Ram like iPhone 5/5S??? Does iPhone 4/4S has Nano Sim??? while 5/5S/SE has it??? iPhone 6/6S might not have a 3GB Ram but in terms of DESIGN that is why they are still belongs to Generation 3...

I don’t think you understood my post.

..for plus owners maybe. There are millione of people for whom a plus phone is too big for practical use (me included). So the X is perfect for those - more screen in a similar size to the 8.

It is perfectly understandable for plus owners to be more unsure about the X as they’re used to a larger (and wider) screen. If you need that, then the X might feel like a step backwards - at least until the X+

Many bizarre aspects to the iPhone X and I am considering returning mine for an 8 plus. The screen is effectively smaller, particularly to watch Un-cropped videos. The colour is not consistent across the display due to the limitations of OLED (for example, this website has a solid white background in the forum and the colour shift is very pronounced). Maybe the blacks are blacker, but the colour inconsistency is really distracting. The notch is clearly a marketing choice, but it is tremendously distracting. Face ID requires an uncovered face, and cold climates do not lend themselves to this. Face ID also requires the phone to be held at constrained angles. This means that subtly unlocking and checking your phone at a distance, say in your lap, doesn’t work with Face ID. Holding the phone in the corners has triggered the emoji keyboard button as when typing the edge of my palm brushes against the bottom corner of the screen. I suppose all of this just takes some getting used to, but I am not seeing the benefits. The screen may be better in some ways, but worse in others. Face ID is not an improvement on Touch ID etc. So I’m torn. I want to love the X but I think it’s going to be replaced by an 8.

But the usable size is the same as the 8. Video, for example, when viewed without cropping is the same size on both models. And zoomed in video you lose the top, bottom and the notch due to the strange aspect ratio of the screen. The control center is now much more difficult to access with one hand.

It is like getting new speakers for your stereo. Big difference becasue that is where all the sound comes from :) And yet, Samsung, Google etc have had OLED for years. Is Apple's THAT much better? I do not see how that could be true.

It doesn't matter who had OLED first, It's who has the best OLED display today and quite frankly Apple calibrates the OLED display on the iPhone X way differently than Samsung calibrates their samsung devices to achieve optimal results, The Samsungs(Galaxy, Note etc) are calibrated for oversaturated tones and the iPhone X is calibrated for more natural tones. You can have the same screen as us on a Samsung device as we technically have a Samsung OLED display in our iPhone X's however our displays are calibrated very differently.

Here's a question for you: Will it ever make sense to have a display that is not perfectly rectangular?

Pulling this thread out of the grave just to input my thoughts...the iPhone X is a great phone I’m sure! Coming from a 6 to an 8 Plus (my first plus size phone), I am very pleased! Especially in the battery life department!

I wonder how many people have actually had first-hand experience of both the 8 and the X.

I have. I bought the X and kept it for a month before exchanging it for an 8, which I've now had for about a month.

My own view is that I'm guessing that for most people there are very few differences between the two except (a) screen size and shape, (b) physical size and weight, and (c) FaceID and TouchID.

If there's a difference in speed I haven't noticed it. Both are great. If there's a difference in screen quality I haven't noticed it. I suspect you'd have to put them side-by-side to notice a difference. Even if there is a difference, it's nothing like as revolutionary as retina vs non-retina. That was a huge leap forward.

My own preference is for a rectangular screen. And I prefer small and light. As for FaceID vs TouchID, again the 8 comes out on top for me. FaceID is really clever, but TouchID is just better. In my opinion. For me. In my view.

Given the big difference in price, "downgrading" to the 8 (not the 8+) from the X was a no-brainer and I'm very happy with my choice and delighted with my phone.

I am not seeking the validation of others. I am not jealous that other people have more money than me. I bought an iPhone X. I could afford an iPhone X. In the end it wasn't for me.

The 8 is the culmination of all past iphones. Simple it’s the best. The X is the new gen, which will be the worst of that gen simple because it was the first of its kind.

And for those talking about the Xs screen, I dont see the point when most run out and put a protector on it.

I don’t even have to read the article. The plus isn’t a viable option for me due to size so it isn’t relevant. Having a huge screen on a 7 size device is a win/win.

The X isn’t some new product it is the normal iPhone with some slightly different gestures. Are you talking about FaceID specifically? I would agree there, for me it is perfect but folks do complain about it so there is room for improvement.

I've got both an 8 and a recently purchased X. The X is a good deal heavier and more unwieldy whereas the 8 slips into the pocket more easily. However, I like the X for face unlock, OLED screen and its better battery.

Both are keepers.

What exactly has the X brought new to iPhones other than Face ID, gesture swipes, and new design?

Better screen, Better front camera, etc. Guys like you are fooling yourself.
[doublepost=1516035532][/doublepost]
If X wasn't being called X to honor the original iPhone, it wouldn't feel so special and maybe many would wait on the 2018/2020 models which would be the 2nd/4th of the generation for the X design.

Biggest BS statement I have read in awhile. Seriously? You think calling it the X is the only reason it is a special iPhone? You are delusional.

I own both. I prefer the X. To me, it is the superior phone.

There is a difference. Just because you didn't notice it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Both are great.

Yes, they are both great. The X is better.

If there's a difference in screen quality I haven't noticed it.

See, this is what I am talking about. The X screen is far better and if you don't notice that, then your palette is not very good or you are not being truthful.

I suspect you'd have to put them side-by-side to notice a difference. Even if there is a difference, it's nothing like as revolutionary as retina vs non-retina. That was a huge leap forward.

Again, this is a ridiculous statement.

Good for you. I am really happy that you are happy with your choice. In the end, that is all the matters. However, don't use your happiness with the 8 as a reason to make ridiculous statements. The X is the better phone, it may not be right for you, but that doesn't make the fact that it is the better device any less true.

FaceID is really clever, but TouchID is just better. In my opinion. For me. In my view.

Face ID is just as fast. I mean people really fool themselves into not looking at the facts. In this Trump world, I am not surprised.

I am not seeking the validation of others. I am not jealous that other people have more money than me. I bought an iPhone X. I could afford an iPhone X. In the end it wasn't for me.

Again, good for you. I am glad you are happy, but your being happy doesn't change the facts about which phone is superior.

I disagree, it's not a normal iPhone, it's a new iPhone with no home button, Touch ID, full OLED screen, gesture, etc etc etc. The iOS could be considered normal but everything else isn't.

The should have just called it the Apple Phone to start a new generation making the iPhone a classic, which it is.

I don't think many people complain about the speed of Face ID. The complaints are mostly from all the choices you have to make with Face ID: make up or no make up, this angle or that angle, glasses or no glasses, lightning or no lighting, smile or no smile etc. etc. etc.

I'll throw this wrinkle in. With KGI's prediction that the "mid-range" iPhone 8+ successor will have a bigger screen, FaceID, and a LCD panel? People are paying a premium to have tech much earlier than 2018.

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/13/kuo-three-new-iphones-2018/

$649 to $749 starting USA price? If you're telling me I can go ahead and pay that much to get FaceID and a bigger screen by waiting another 8 months? It makes the wait worth it because worst case scenario, the iPhone X price drops by a few hundred dollars because of it will be a 2017 model.

the best iphone this gen imo

who needs the gimmicky x ??
It's not gimmicky, it's the future of iOS. It's this generation and its where iPhone is heading.

People are paying a premium to have tech that isn't new and is available in other devices that are offered at a much lower price with an entire screen with no notch. :p

I was talking from a solely Apple purchasing perspective though. Yes, there are more lower cost effective alternatives with great specs and even better hardware than Apple. Apple is the first mainstream company to market the hell out of a 3D face scanning biometric solution. Apple didn't invent facial recognition, but other companies are scrambling to match them.
