I upgraded our phones (me/wife) from the 11 to the 14 Pro. The upgrade is significant. Anyone upgrading from the 13 should expect very little and that is what you got. Nobody says for the most part that everyone should upgrade every year.

I really do laugh hard at people being upset at what they get on upgrading every year.

I find this mostly a logical claim. I think there are a wide range of scenarios, budgets, expectations, and not one size fits all for any person's situation. For some, any year to year jump might be relevant to THEM and they are happier. Others might be best waiting. The problem I have is when any one pushes their own situation on others, as if it applies to every one else in general.

I don't see the issue with his review to be honest. Yes, the title is clickbait (gotta work that youtube algorithm), and it does get ranty on the iphone and Apple in general, but he makes some fair points.

Other popular youtube reviewers have expressed similar concerns regarding the camera (ie it's very similar to the previous model), the island (how useful will it be?), AOD (it's too bright), type C port (why hasn't it been implemented when it's found on many other Apple products...) etc etc.

Not sure why folks here get defensive when someone poses a critical review?

If you like the phone, just use it. Don't worry what others think.
Good post. It’s somebody’s opinion. I don’t care about somebody’s opinion, only mine counts.

Nice try with the clickbait title and miniature, I'm not even going to waste my time with this.

It’s good to respect opinions you don’t agree with but they should be posting reviews ethically, should they not? For example, I felt The Verge’s iPhone 14 Pro review was unbalanced and I disgree with quite a bit of it, but at least I didn’t feel Nilay was making any absurd accusations. Then again, that is just my opinion as well.

I started watching this even with the click-bait title and didn’t even make it to the end. I don’t understand how someone in an honest review states that the AOD could’ve been brought to the 13 Pro’s (yes, it could) but then goes on to say the battery life drain from the AOD made him turn it off. So if they bought it to the 13 would the 14 have been a major upgrade? Because battery life would’ve been atrocious in the 13’s.

The iPhone 14 (all versions) are not a significant upgrade from the 13’s. I don’t think you need an “honest” reviewer to tell you that, you just need to pick up the phone as a 13 owner. Easily a skippable year for most. I upgrade every year, so I’m never really overwhelmed with a sense of “this is worth it”. It’s just become a habit, and I assume it’s like that for a few people in this forum. Most don’t upgrade their phones yearly, the 14’s will be a really decent upgrade for many with an 11 or older.

Do you use some non-Apple Store place? Because returns within 14 days are standard at the Apple Store.

Also, mail-in returns exist.

This is the point where you lose (what’s left of your) credibility.

Not every city in the world has return policy in Apple store. Cannot return it even box is not opened.

Exactly!

For me, I'm quite happy with my XR, despite the "reviewers" (both here on Macrumours, other forums and on youtube land) telling me the 14 is a worthy upgrade.

No chance I'm going to spend several hundred (if not thousand or more) USD/EUR/GBP/AED/CHF/NZD(insert your currency here) for a new phone when I currently have a perfectly serviceable phone which does everything I need.

Will get the battery replaced later this year at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a new phone, and will get a few more years use from my current phone. According to 3U tools, my current battery is 84% battery health with 935 charges...that battery served me (and the previous owner) very well!

XR is still faster than all android flagships

Guess you have to blame the consumer protection laws in your country for that. Are we talking about an Apple reseller here by the way? Where do you live?

No matter official Apple store or reseller, no return policy. I have not voted for years, because it does not matter anymore.

You already know it if you know worldwide politics well enough
No I don't. There are plenty of countries where there are no/hardly any consumer protection laws and that are run by authoritarian regimes. But apparently it's a big secret where you live. Anyway, wasted enough time here. Have fun wherever you live.

But very few places you can vote but mean nothing

Without even having to think I can name at least a dozen countries that fit that criteria, so you really need to broaden your horizon.

You can earn a lot of money by buying Max 14 then sell it over here, but it is super hard to get one.

I know in regions like the UAE you can’t return products unless they are faulty or you have a very good reason to do so. Some countries even charge you a restocking fee if you return a product. Thankfully I live in a country where you have a returns window of 28 days under our statutory rights and don’t have to justify why I didn’t want something.

Back to the topic, what makes for an honest review to the enthusiasts here? Not talking about the OP video specifically but I’ve found over the years any review that contains any negative opinion large or small, is not greeted particularly well on this forum. I remember my first bad experience was asking for help with an issue I had with my iPhone 6S a few years back and I was called a liar because apparently my problem wasn’t experienced by a few others (battery drain after an update). Not everything is fluffy though and although we all love our Apple products, they are not always perfect.

I don’t have a problem with valid criticism. I have a problem with only critical reviews being viewed as valid.

I think MKBHD’s review was pretty fair. He talked about disappointments and things he didn’t like, and also things he was impressed by, and those in the middle. I like iPhoneDo’s reviews for the same reason. He really takes the time to use the hardware and give really specific examples of why he says certain things.

There are others who are more towards the iJustine type, which has a place, but which I wouldn’t call an actual review, more of an excited explanation of features.

And on the other end of the spectrum are those who really dislike the way iPhones limit personalization (or whatever else they hate), so they are never really going to be fair in reviewing an iPhone. We have those in this forum too. They’re tiresome. I’m not a huge fan of the Android OS generally, but some of the phones are amazing, and should be lauded as such.

Unfortunately, some people make new accounts just to troll, so some posters tend to view complaint posts from newbie accounts with skepticism. It’s not really fair, but it’s life, and it’s not limited to online behavior.
