500 nits is insufficient

Are you using your computer on the surface of the sun?

Have you seen how bright 1000 nits is? It sears my retinas. I have a monitor that can do 1000 nit SDR sustained... It's horrific. I couldn't look at it for more than a minute before turning it way down.

It's not that bright when you're in a bright environment to begin with.

Exactly. Both the Apple Watch and iPhone are specced at 1000 nits. (for realistic viewing outdoors)

Although, the size of the devices does play a role in facilitating the higher brightness output due to the lower wattage overall. However, the batteries are much larger on the MacBooks as well.

This is now possible! I bumped the other topic up as well with the link, but the developer of Lunar got it working and has offered it up in this beta build: https://github.com/alin23/Lunar/issues/417#issuecomment-1067319528

I'm running it now and it's amazing. I don't intend on running the display full tilt at 1600 all the time, but having it (and all levels between 500 and 1600) as an option for when you need better daylight visibility or just more brightness is awesome.
