My 15p was super hot on 1hr zoom call walking around outside. On two occasions .My 13p did NOT have this issues.
I’ve been using a 13 pro max remote working for 2 years and on 4-5 hours of calls a day. If my 13 pro max was charging and I’m on a Google meet call from car the screen would dim and I would get temp warnings. So far the 15 pro max has only giving me similar experience when I’m fast charging over usbc with a 30w car charger and on a call. At one point it warned me that it couldn’t charge anymore due to device temp.

So it did make national headlines yesterday, in the national news. I was at Apple Store there was a long line of people returning phones. They even acknowledged the issue. I experienced it first hand with two pro devices! Don't think its made up..

Maybe! My local Apple stores have still been flooded with people trying to get a phone. I am sure some have had issues but I don't think it's as widespread as it's being reported. But nonetheless, I am hoping Apple can release a software fix.

Really disappointed that the things my 14PM did without any problem/complaint in room temperature environments (you know, just basic stuff like syncing the day's iCloud photos, charging on the reg) now involve "iPhone needs to cool down". I've thrown out all the wireless chargers to try and help reduce heat, but that's not really helping much, either.

So, I've decided to store my iPhone here. A bit inconvenient, yes, but also delicious, because now I just eat ice cream every time I need to charge my phone, get my phone, or the like. Next thread: app recommendations to help manage cholesterol, hahaha.

Other ideas? I'm really not thrilled about putting fridges/freezers/ice packs everywhere I use my phone to just basically use the damn $1,600 thing when last year's $1,600 thing did this just fine and Apple thought I "needed" Titanium for some reason, because, what, that 15g weight they saved makes any difference at all? They've more than offset that 15g "saving" with the fact they have broken daily, regular usage of the phone by using terrible thermal design (that I challenge anyone to really, truly, say without laughing at themselves that they couldn't handle that 15g difference...). And that's a feat, b/c Ti has better thermal performance all other things equal....it seems that the reduction of internal surface area to further save weight maybe causing this issue, but of course, I have no doubt that Apple (and/or the fanboi crowd) will have endless advice on how "I'm using it wrong", it's "normal" behavior, or something (I know, I probably shouldn't take pictures with my iPhone and expect it to sync it with iCloud at room temperature...pretty unreasonable, and it is totally normal for just a photo sync to require a trip to the freezer to keep the device within normal operating temperatures).

Show me your serious (or not so serious) ways of helping your new, amazing Titanium iPhone Paperweight Edition keep its cool (just don't put it on paper when it's too hot, or it may become iPhone Lighter-in-more-than-just-weight Edition).
It has only been one day of heavy use, but the thermal performance of my 15 PM has been clearly better than the thermal performance of my 14 Pro. YMMV.

That sounds a bit dramatic. I was at the Apple store just a few hours ago and there didn't seem to be anyone returning phones. There is certainly a whole bunch of very misleading and low info headlines going around though. And a lot of low information people getting swept up in it.

that's why this thread is at the top? lol but yeah I hear ya, can't confirm sadly.. I just know mine got really hot.. have never experienced that

So after installing 17.1 public beta my 15 Pro seems to be running much cooler and my battery consumption has stabilized. I haven’t done any rigorous testing, but the activities that were causing heat and battery loss for me before (settings app, web browsing, phone calls, Teams) aren’t causing any problems now. For me at least this looks to have been a software issue that 17.1 has addressed.

same for me for the most part ever since I updated earlier this morning. no heat the rest of the day, decent battery drain. nothing too excessive in terms of use, but definitely better than yesterday.

I have had the 15 pro max since the 22nd and it is yet to even be warm. I should note that I don’t use a case.

FWIW my 15PM remains cool even when scrolling Instagram or watching reels

How hot does a phone have to be before it counts as "overheating"? Some people are reporting warm phones as overheating despite not receiving the shutdown warning.

My phone only gets warm when wireless charging or running graphically intense games, the highest temperature recorded via IR thermometer was 38°C on both the front and back surface right where the logic board is.

I was hoping that all of this thermal nonsense was BS, but today I took some short videos in an air conditioned room with my 15 pro, and yep...... it is a very toasty boy! No special video recording features enabled, just regular video recording at default settings..... It's like a little heater or a hand warmer after 3 minutes.

If it is getting this hot in iOS 17, Apple is definitely going to have to do something as this phone ages and goes through future iOS updates...... I never expected it to be so hot right from the start of its life. Very disappointing.....

Everyone try taking videos with your 15 Pro at default settings for 3 minutes, and see what happens then......

I am not making excuses for Apple but from the many posts I have seen over the launch weekend and this week, I can say some of the people making claims were most definitely lying and/ or blowing things way out of portion.
Reports from people not waiting 3 days after getting their new phone and 1 day after a minor system update should be ignored. They shouldn't even be made in the first place, but that's not how modern outrage culture works.

That's completely normal

Ih ave the phone from launch date a 15ProMax - 1TB had issues with data transfer of over 60K photos, 3K Videos and I was not going to my phone all at once so I started doing it for each year and guess what the phones is NOT getting HOT or anything at all. It had got warm once or twice but never HOT.

Defend at all cost - a "gate" has emerged!!

Interesting.... I've also had it since the launch date... Just the 15 pro regular, and it would describe it as "more than just warm" after 3 minutes when taking videos at standard settings..... Very surprising for a brand new phone....

If it is getting as warm as it is right now after taking a video for 3 three minutes, imagine what it will do after 3 years, if Apple doesn't address this.... Devices don't get cooler with successive iOS versions! The first version, the version that it ships with is usually when it runs the coolest and the smoothest, and the phone has to work harder for future versions of iOS.

I didn't get this phone to use it for 1 year. I bought it to use it for 5 years, and if it is getting this warm right out of the gate, I wonder about its lifespan.... We have to wait and see, I guess..... I would prefer the phone to be cool in my hand when taking a video for 3 minutes... Try 5 minutes or 7 minutes.... It's toasty when taking videos at default settings....

I’m sorry but hit is completely normal that a phone gets warmer when you shoot a 3 minute or longer video. there is a lot of work going on inside while you do this…

Mine gets warm, as did my 13P, less than 40C though. Taking videos is a very intensive process and it also consume a lot of my battery. But if yours becomes VERY hot, it might be defective, as the others which are experiencing overheating and temperature warnings. But just a warm phone is normal. I was obsessing about battery percentage on my 13P when it was new, and just rebooting it 2-3 times would make the back very hot. But now it's 2 years old, never had temperature issues, and battery is at 96%. A warm to hot phone during intensive tasks is normal. Phones hot doing a cell phone call or FaceTime call, or very hot doing seemingly nothing, have something wrong with them. Software or more probably hardware. Do a reset, use it for a while without reimporting a backup, and if it's still too hot then return it. This is not a problem of the whole 15 Pro line, it's just some % of defective units.

So yesterday I was in my car and figured I’d see how far I could push this phone before it overheats. Plugged it into my car charger, opened up Apple Maps and started a route, played some graphics intensive games, left some other apps open that use location, and switched between the games and taking pictures and video. After about 5 minutes the phone definitely warmed up, felt all sides of the phone and none of them were hot to the touch, just warm.

The one thing I forgot to do was to make a phone call, I’ll have to try it again, it was only about 75 degrees at the time as well. Will have to see if Apple addresses this, I want to try all these again without charging as that always seems to generate the most heat, for now, I’m more concerned about the battery life,

I just took a 5 minute video with my iPhone 4:
result -- it is COOL TO THE TOUCH!

I also just completed a 5 minute video with my iPhone 7:
result -- it is SLIGHTLY WARM TO THE TOUCH

5 minute video with iPhone 15 pro:
result -- NOTICEABLY WARMER, bordering on HOT compared to previous two models.

I love the 15 pro. I was so excited for it to come out, because I haven't upgraded for so long, but My iPhone 15 pro is getting noticeably warmer / hotter than previous models when completing a 5 minute video at default settings. This kind of thing may or may not affect the lifespan of the phone, and I would prefer it to only heat up the same as previous models for taking videos. I would prefer not to hold a hot phone in my hand.

I don't think that people complaining about this is going to go away, because 15 pro is heating up much more than previous models. Fingers crossed that Apple may be able to tweak the settings on the phone with future software updates.....
