Don't think it was ever done on servers.
That’s exactly the reason it wasn’t real time on the Pixel’s camera viewer, all the processing was done in the cloud. That’s why I was never impressed by the feature and why I was always confused by people calling it a feature of the camera.

That was my understanding at launch anyway, I could be misremembering.

No processing is done in the cloud.

Whether it's Google's Night Sight or Huawei's Super Night Mode, they all require the user to hold still for a few seconds. This allows the sensor to capture more light and to apply AI processing.

Ah, THAT’S the reason why you don’t get a live image of what the result will be. I thought it was doing analysis off-device.

Yes. Apple needs to bring in a low light mode. The XS should have had it already. What the Pixel can do in low light is magic.

I'm as big of an Apple Fan Boy as there is, and couldn't agree more.

Night Sight is amazing, not enough to switch but nevertheless.

Low light photos have always been troublesome for the iPhone. The software enhancements have drastically changed what you can obtain now with a smart phone. I hope Apple can expand beyond just what this third camera can produce, but with the aid of software to ‘enhance’ the photo where it’s on par with the competition.

With iOS 13, Apple really seems to be recognizing and acknowledging that they're behind in machine learning. I just hope that a low light feature isn't exclusive to the iPhone 11 Pro.

Rather not want to depend on an app though. Should be built in and i’m Expecting apple have got this covered for this year. If they are spending this much time on the camera i’m Sure they have.

For those that don’t want to wait or have no interest in upgrading, why not?

The night mode your asking for is software based, not hardware.

Not sure what you’re getting at. The iPhone takes excellent pictures in the dark.

Just tonight I was at the airport and I wanted to take a picture of a particularly pretty 777.

The end result is really a work of art. This was on my XR.
I just can't stop laughing

Is Night Sight still done on servers or is it done right on the phone?
It's on the phone, but Google camera has around 500MB installed. Algorithms and who knows what...

It's also hardware. Pixel visual core. Those really big algorithms needs dedicated hardware Processor. Otherwise... Just look at gcam port... Crashes, laggy, stuttering...

That's actually one the biggest things i hate about the camera. No night mode. It's amazing what the Android phones can do. Apple was always late to the party (e.g. iOS dark mode), which is fine by me because they wanna perfect it before adding it to their set of features, but a night mode is really something desireable. Maybe in the future.

It’s actually not according to wired who were quoting google engineers.

Pixel visual core wasn’t used in the camera app on the pixel 2 or 2 xl. On the 3 it was used to enhance photo booth and top shot pictures, not night sight.

Night sight is just software (long exposure with multiple pictures), remember devices from Samsung and Huawei do not feature the pixels visual core either and are capable of night sight.

Any iPhone users wanting night sight can download an app right now, posted a link above.

It's funny how all you do is read articles but haven't ever used the features yourself. The definition of an internet expert.

That app you listed takes 20 seconds to even produce a picture. That's a massive difference from 4 seconds it takes on the pixel/samsung. Which is quite hilarious from a company that always boasts about how powerful their chip. Not to mention it's nothing like night sight. You lose all sharpness in the photo. Might as well take a regular pic and just use photoshop.....

You don’t really use the iPhone, do you?
Is that also the definition of an “internet expert”?

Yes the app works, your comparison of “processing times” is rather off . I have to hold my camera still when using my noticlux lens as well.

No idea why you think that app developer is responsible for the hardware on the iPhone, that’s apple.

What sharpness are you referring to?
Have you seen the photos posted of android night sight above?

But that’s all night sight really is:

“As Google mentioned, it’s not launching with the phone, but now we do have some details on how it works. Apparently, Google uses longer exposure and a bunch of separate photos to stitch together a nighttime photo that shows off the details without needing the help of a flash.”

Longer exposure and multiple photos, that’s it.

First pic is regular pic using iPhone x. 2nd pic is using the crap app you posted. It looks like it was taken on a 2001 flip phone lol. And yes it takes 15 seconds just to process that image.

First 20 seconds....now 15 seconds, still sounds a bit high.

Are you going to post the pixel night sight or galaxy night sight for comparison next?

That's 5 seconds holding the phone still and 15 seconds of processing. I'm sure you know this since you've used it right? Where are your example photos?

But sure here's what pixel/Samsung can do. Looks EXACTLY like that iPhone app eh?

The comparison photos you provided aren’t very comparable.

I don’t think the phones are taking a picture of the same subject. There also appears to be much more light in the galaxy photo than in the photos you provided by iPhone.

The apps night sight mode is kind of pointless in sunlight. Don’t have a pixel to compare it with either.

Its ok. It'll get dark later on and then you can show off this amazing app and its non blurry photos.

Won’t make a difference without a pixel to compare with.

The pixel or galaxy night sight might not have made any difference to the subject and lighting you used for the iPhone.

Sure will get right on that.

App is for any iPhone user that wants a software based night sight mode, today.

Let me repeat myself, you can just download the pixel camera onto the note and use it if you like it better. I know it's hard for iPhone users to grasp the concept of being able to use whatever app you want.

No need to be a ********, I was legitimately confused and didn’t know this was a thing. Good on you for confirming the fact that you’re a snob though.

HAHAHA you're joking right? That cat in BOTH photos looks like it was taken from a 2001 flip phone....can you seriously not see how blurry that is? You actually think that's iPhone quality?

Do we really need to squabble about this? Isn't it just obvious that in this case, some other phones have something nice that the iPhone is lacking? Having a night sight mode equally good as on the Pixels and quickly selectable in the main camera app would make the new iPhones more desirable, wouldn't it? Is there really anything to discuss there?

I'm currently quite into the Apple line of products for my own use but I'm still not sure I'll want to spend on the new iPhone. I'm considering just sticking with my trusty 7 Plus and getting a cheaper Android phone for the OLED screen, general tinkering with another OS, and - night sight. If the new iPhone had night sight too, again, easily accessible in the main camera app, that would tip the scale another notch (pun actually not intended ) towards shelling out the bucks on that instead.

The pic came out much better than your attempt at using the app.

When is night sight not suppose to be blurry?.

Seriously though, what phone camera did you have back in 2001. My first phone that had a camera was with the Nokia 7650 back in 2002. And If you think any of the photos here look like they came from a 0.3 megapixel camera, well then I don’t really think you know what your taking about boomer.

its hilarious that you posted a clear pic of a wine glass from your phone and then posted a blurry pixelated pic of your cat and actually thought that looked just as clear. do your cat a favor and never post those pics online, even your cat would be ashamed of how crappy those look.

btw stealing some compressed image from a website to try to show how "bad" pixel's night sight looks is funny. just grasping at straws all over the place. here is a real image from a real phone for you. so no, at this point in time, apple cannot compete. lets see what they come out with at the keynote.
