I’ve been complaing about this for months. I can tell you with certainty, that it is a Safari issue. Why? Because I have an M1 MBP 8/256 - and, this is the key, it is a 100% stock machine - meaning, I have not downloaded any other apps whatsoever, I have not added any extensions to Safari, or modified it in any way, I have put virtually no files onto the SSD, so this is pretty much as when I purchased it. Furthermore, I have always updated it to the latest Big Sur and any security etc. updates.

And, regarding how well or badly pages are coded, I get this notice from Apple when I’m streaming content from Apple TV+ in Safari. So, really, this is a 100% Apple affair, from the hardware, to the software, to the content and utilization. When I stream, I am doing *nothing else*, not running any other apps, or any other user initiated processes. Furthermore, this is not a case where Safari has been used for hours before streaming - no, it’s literally, open the MBP, open Safari, click on the Apple TV+ link and start streaming. Within minutes, the message appears.

There is no excuse. Something here is very broken when you can’t stream content from Apple’s own site, using Apple’s own brower and doing nothing else at the same time. That puts a real crimp on the usability. After all, it’s not like I’m asking too much, or pushing the system to its limits. I’m just trying to use the computer as it is meant to be used and in a very pedestrian and simple way.

Apple needs to fix this. It’s been going on for months, and updates come and go, but the problem persists. I’m starting to lose patience. Again - APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THIS!!!

I'm thinking it's an OS issue that is amplified when actual tasks actually require memory. I've posted in other Big Sur threads that on cold start, the OS will boot and use up over 4GB of memory (isn't the minimum requirement 4GB?) So when watch anything on Netflix or Disney+ in any browser, it's a RAM killing task. In Safari, it's content warning prompts and automatic refreshes to help clear memory.

I am getting it today on my MacBook Air M1 when reading MacRumors.
That is not good. I blame mine on the fact that my 2012 MacBook Pro is almost 10 years old. I hoped it would go away when I get a new Mxx later this year. I mine bombs when doing crosswords on spiracle. It reloads a game when I just about done with it because to much energy is being used.

I get the error consistently when streaming Disney+. I just use Firefox for Disney+ right now until Apple gets around to fixing the problem. I haven’t seen that error anywhere else though.

I only get this occasionally on Facebook, Google Sheets, and sometimes Outlook web. But I also stuffed my 2019 Mac mini with 32GB of RAM so I could have my obscene number of tabs without this issue.

I used to be a Brave diehard, but lately I've just been using Safari with no complaints. FWIW, Brave and Chrome have the same issues to differing degrees in my experience on any platform — they just don't warn you about it ahead of time.

Given these complaints though, think I'll hold off on an Apple Silicon upgrade until they offer reasonable amounts of RAM... 8GB isn't enough in 2021.

The fact that Safari can't run Disney Plus is in my view a big red flag as Disney is competing directly with Apple TV. I would be very surprised if this isn't brought up in anti-trust reviews and I think it's kind of stupid of Apple to be this blatant.

3rd party browsers on iPadOS/iOS are a bigger antitrust violation since they’re reskinned Safari with limitations. At least on MacOS you get full 3rd party browsers.

Is Apple preventing Disney+ from running on Safari, or is Disney+ the party preventing it? It wouldn't be the first time someone tried to block their site from being used on a specific browser for nothing more than spite...

Not a "red flag", it's a bug that goes back a number of years, before Disney Plus existed. And just look a few posts back, it even causes problems with Apple's own streaming service.

I get this notice from Apple when I’m streaming content from Apple TV+ in Safari.

It's certainly a problem that Apple should have fixed long ago, but it's not a conspiracy.

I think it’s a bug in Safari. I can run Disney+ all day in Firefox.

I haven’t tried Disney+ in Safari on Monterey yet but my bank site had the same error and it is fixed.

I get this message for Twitter, Shutterstock and many other websites on a 2010 Mac Pro with 56GB RAM...

Yeah this message appears for me on all sorts of sites (including this one!) with startling regularity. In and of itself, it's not much more than an annoyance. This alert's sibling, the 'this page was reloaded...' is a genuine problem as it just refreshes the page with little regard for what was on it. It's a shame to have to stick to Firefox and Chrome on my shiny M1 MBA (16gb).

One option is to use applications like Unite that allows creation of web apps for individual sites - containing their own memory, history and cache management. Regularily uses this approach for the play services I connect to - minimises problems.

I hope everyone is filing bugs for this problem or upvoting existing bugs. I gave up on Safari (even using it as a backup browser) ages ago.

So I'm trying to recreate these now since the issue used to be easy to replicate but I can't seem to get the error message on Safari with any of the streaming sites--specifically Disney+ which was the one I had noticeable issues with. I haven't seen the message on Reddit or Macrumors lately either but to be fair, I haven't been browsing it as much lately as I had prior.

How long after you start streaming on D+ (or any streaming site) before you get the error? Does it happen on every video you try or only occasional ones? If the latter, what ones are you trying that are causing issues?

I noticed the issue would pop up on Wandavision within the first 5-10 minutes of streaming and I could see the RAM usage Disney+ creepy up quickly. I think it reached a high of 5 or 6GB before Safari would just refresh the page but wouldn't release all the RAM and it would just keep cycling until I restarted Safari.

Don't seem to be having those issues now though, but I'd like to try to see if I can get the issue to pop up again.

Can you download off Disney and watch using VLC? I don't have Disney+ so I have no idea but the ability to watch offline seems to be something that people would want.

Nah, due to DRM, I'm almost certain its not an accepted "workaround".

I just ran Loki for about 10 minutes and couldn't get Safari's RAM usage above 1GB but I remembered the issue I had prior was with Wandavision so I played a later episode of Wandavision. It looks like there's some kind of...RAM lock/leak. Something between the Disney+ module and Safari isn't releasing unneeded RAM. The issue is better now, but there's still a creep up. Before I got tired of streaming the video, I was able to get the RAM usage of Disney+ to 1.6GB and it was..slowly, but surely..creeping up.

It seems dynamic websites and Safari have an issue and I don't know what exactly is causing it. It isn't as bad as it was a few months ago, but its still definitely present.

You should get it pretty quickly here if you manipulate the map or play with the controls. This is an experimental site I built awhile ago with 3js/webGL to visualize LIDAR data in 3d. It loads images on the canvas and creates some large arrays, but I get no error messages with Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Opera.
