Basically the trade off right now (Thanks to Intel's borderline monopolistic policies lately) is that you can either have a Core 2 Duo plus a third party chipset (like the NVidia 320M) or you can have an i-series processor and are stuck with Intel's chipset and graphics.

The only way to have an i-series processor with decent graphics is to add a dedicated GPU like the 330M that the higher end MBPs use, plus an extra chip on the board to handle the GPU switching. This creates a bigger battery drain, heat load, and requires more space on the board.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

The newest INTEL IGP peforms equal or better then the 320m.

I am more interested in what the changes in MBA brings to Macbook and Macbook Pro?

MB/MBP will have in the future
1) Flash Storage
2) Removal of Super Drive
3) Removal of Hard drive?
4) Combination of both Flash and HDD for 15"/17" if space permits.

What I want to see in MBA
1) $49 or even $29 super drive add on - $79 is expensive for an external super drive
2) 4GB Standard RAM
3) 128 GB standard SSD
4) Sandy Bridge CPU (less heat, over clocking ability, Intel IGP if the performance is good)

Right on, with the removal of the superdrive / hdd on the mbp, you have lots more room for a discrete gpu solution the 13".

Also i agree with sandy bridge part, it just seems weird releasing a computer when sandy bridge is just a few months away. The intel IGP peforms well and doesnt drain much power also.

im with barefoots

I have the Imacn2.8 core 2 duo, 4gb ram 24" etc as my main machine. Its where I do all my photoshop and store all my files. The 11.6 air is amazing. great for the couch, travel, coffee shops, ******* etc. But I have the lights dimmed on the sofa and the kb is hard to see. Im a hunt and pecker.

It would be close to perfect if...

... it had a backlit keyboard.

Go read a few benchmarks. The current X4500 is not as good as even the old 9400m. As for the graphics coming in next year's Sandy Bridge chips, they are finally on par with the 9400m, which is now about 2 years old. The 320m is twice as fast as that. Next year, we'll probably have something even newer from nVidia.

Intel. Will. Never. Catch. Up. Ever since the i740 days they have trailed.

I was thinking of getting the new Air... until I saw no backlit keyboard...

It's a pain to use my HP Mini in the dark, even on max brightness I constantly have to bend the screen down to make sure I'm not typing in random.

Specs aside.....

The people that keep complaining are people that are not even intended for Apple's target demographic, which is NOT creative professionals or PC enthusiasts. This, coupled with the new consumer price point, seems to have not yet sunk in with those folks yet.

And not to sound like a fanboy/troll/whatever, but I always find it amusing how people constantly complain about a company who's generated more than 20 billion in profits last fiscal quarter and who constantly keep pointing out what Apple is doing "wrong" with their products.

Excellent description!

BTW, that's 20 billion in revenue last quarter. It will a couple years before Apple is earning 20 billion each quarter. :D .............

The Apple KB's are VERY touch friendly and it's NOT at all necessary to have backlighting. I've used both and find the BL more bling than function. JMO ~~~~~ experienced as that is.

I need a faster computer with more battery life.

There is too much competition ... from the MBP 13" :D:p:eek: (well I guess there was before they put that 1440x400 resolution display in the 13 MBA. That should be coming to the "pro" though.)

I've owned the previous MacBook Airs and for me, the Apple keyboards are nice on the feel but when typing at night, it's still the same for me regardless if it's an apple or HP keyboard. A backlit does help, at least for me. I was ready to upgrade the Core Duo MBP with a 13" MBA now that it has 4GB ram but without that backlit...

I just wish the 13 incher had a Firewire 800 port. Since it doesn't I would have to keep my MBP around for video editing duties. That just makes things more complicated.

I would also love to have Gig-E port and a backlit keyboard, but can live without them.

The funny thing is that after thinking about this for a couple of days I just can imagine ever purchasing a MBP with HDD and an optical drive. If I were patient I would wait for a 15" MBA with firewire. It has to be a matter of time.

I was going to replace my 13" MB with it until I saw that part too. I also played with it at Apple store and found it a bit "top heavy", it tends to rock back an forth when sitted on a flat surface.
