In Cover Flow view (Command-4), if I delete a file the next one is selected. I think you're talking about Column view (Command-3) which behaves as you describe.

I'll try the different view types at home later, I love being able to switch to different views for different folders with CMD 1, 2, 3 & 4- thanks for the reply and the welcome
