Next to Tim it really does look beefier than the dimensions on Apple's website suggest. I think the lack of tapering on the tops and bottoms really makes a huge difference.

I'm coming from a rMBP 2015, which has these dimensions:

Height: 1.8 cm (0.71 inch)
Width: 35.89 cm (14.13 inches)
Depth: 24.71 cm (9.73 inches)
Weight: 2.04 kg (4.49 pounds)

to a new 16 inch which has these:

Height 1.68 cm (0.66 inches)
Width: 35.57 cm (14.01 inches)
Depth: 24.81 cm (9.77 inches)
Weight: 2.2 kg (4.8 pounds)

So it looks a decent amount heavier but basically the same size. Except...

That profile shot shows you that much of the rMBP 2015's thickness is in tapered design elements, whereas the new 16 inch is shaped more like a brick...

Still looking forward to it being a monster of a performer (and realistically this thing is rarely leaving the desk), but it's got looks only mother Tim could truly love.

if you take the bottom rubbers that now sticks a little bit more than the old one...this device is even thinner
The lid its clear very thin considering the middle of the lid section
No wonder the imac rounded back shape is also gone.So this is the design language from Apple now..from iphones to ipad, to these MBp and the imacs

I appreciate the consistency there. Now if Apple could get its colors more consistent across its product line, including unifying its shades of space gray, that’d be great.

Its crazy that the new model is heavier than the 2015. I'm honestly shocked that Apple allowed that. I'm fine with it but the 2015 was already a lot to carry around so this is defintely going to add some weight to my bag.

That thing looks chunky. (Not that it’s a bad thing just surprised)
I think it’s the only real thing that bothers me, the thickness. the notch I can live with. But in some way nothing says pro like a thick laptop right all the pro things that live in it Lol

my laptop will always be in a case, I'll never get to look at it this way :-(

Just use a sleeve for storage and when you use the machine set it down on top of the sleeve. Hard cases are disgusting and largely pointless.
my last two laptops have stayed strapped in to their BookBook cases for their whole lives.

My first Mac was a 2007 MBP. From the pics this feels a little like a throwback to those days. It looks like it would look great with the default Tiger blue wallpaper.

I will never understand why people buy these beautiful machines, and then put them in cases. It'd be like buying a beautiful piece of mid century modern furniture and covering it in plastic always.

Protection... and when I'm done with them, they are cosmetically pristine from the outside for resell.

I can not wait to trade in my 2018. This keyboard has been driving me nuts since 2018.

I think we're witnessing a big shift - Apple (and its consumers) are finally coming to terms that if you're going to label a laptop as 'Pro', it needs to be built to compete with other pro-level computers. They're now pulling out the stops, allowing maximum CPU and GPU performance and finally pairing it with an appropriate chunky chassis to accommodate proper air flow and cooling. That's pro-level. I'm especially interested in what the next MBAir and other step-down but ultra-light MacBooks will be like as that's my niche.

I absolutely love the new look. All of the images used in the keynote remind me of the 2007 MacBook 15, particularly the way the bottom edges are rounded

There’s something about the new lid (best seen in the image with Tim), though, that makes me feel things.

They should have ensured it was no heavier than the 2019 16", at 2kg.
