The basic functions of iMovie are so easy.

Is there a way to edit audio ? For example, trim a song from your ipod ?

Not really, this version of iMovie is really just a little more than a clip editor. When you ad audio it simply aligns it with your video clips, and if there is audio in the video it automatically reduces the music audio during these clips. Not really meant to be any form of a real editor and no real editing for audio is included.

I guess i could go back and edit my audio on my computer, then drop it back into itunes as a song and hope it's close to what i wanted. I just have a song in mind that has a 30sec intro and i only have 19seconds of video.

Good start from Apple. Let's see some follow through though. I would like to have some more of these advanced options, such as adding text to photos, and only having text display for a few seconds rather than the whole clip. Also, audio clipping, and HD exporting and you have a great little app for video editing.

Figured it out. Was able to import into iPhoto (even though it's not a "photo", LOL) and go from there...

If you have the new Lightroom 3 from Adobe, you can import videos from there as well. You can even apply your custom renaming function upon import.

I am having some troubles with iMovie on my iphone 4.

I have a 59 second video I am working with, there are 2 points in my video where I want to insert a photo and I can not figure out how to get it in at that exact moment. The two photos are at the end of my clip, and I need them to go in at certain moments within the video, not at the beginning, and not at the end. Please help!

Like I said in the op you have to import the clip multiple times, shortening accordingly.

There is a counter in the upper middle of the screen that will allow you to get the right frame. You can also pinch/zoom a clip to expand or contract it to dial the cut in better.

i saw your tips and tricks clip, that did not help me for this particular instance, although i did learn other things

i have never used imovie at all, so i am unfamilar

i still don't know how to do it based on your response

Do you know how to shorten the clip? Single tap on it then hold and drag the little yellow bubble that shows up at each end of the clip as you desire.

You can shorten (cut off) the beginning or shorten (cut off) the end or both.

Import clip 1, shorten it by cutting off the end, insert your pic, import clip 1 Again, on the other side of the pic, but this time cut off from the beginning.

Multiple pics = multiple imports of the same clip in order to place pics 'in between'

I used the "take a black picture" trick the other day - :p

Here is a quick video I did. The first part was shot with my 3GS, you'll see a pretty dramatic difference in video quality after I leave the Apple store in regards to clarity.

Nicely done.

One big question though ....... the first part of the video was 3GS footage?

Yeah, stumbled out of bed and got rolling. Pretty much everything before I'm inside the Apple store was shot on the 3GS. One sequence was out of order.. the line inside the mall was actually on my way out and that was iPhone 4. I just moved it earlier in the timeline to show just how long the lines were.

So you:

Synced 3GS video to iTunes/folder

Synced 3GS video from folder thru iTunes to iP4

You did not do any conversion to 3GS video (until iMovie)

Right?

I've tried various conversions of video to sync to the iPhone to then edit in iMovie (just for kicks) but somehow the conversion is coming out wrong and iMovie won't see it

Shot video with 3GS and synced phone when I got back which created an event in iPhoto. I then synced the video via iTunes in the photos tab by checking "include video". Nothing special or any extra steps or any conversion.

A thing of note... I had to actually make the movie twice. The first time I did it, I was pulling assets from a synced smart album in iPhoto called "video" which contained ONLY video. I synced my phone after I made the project and iMovie then said my links were broken/missing video. Once I got rid of the smart folder and just told iTunes to "include video" nothing was ever missing again after I re-did the project. My guess is the smart folder would check for conditions and update, thus breaking the links whereas a standard sync/album leaves things in place. Who knows

Very helpful thread! I've had my iPhone since the 23rd but just now have time to start messing with iMovie. Looking exciting for something I can do right from my phone.

Ps. Just found out you can put your finger over the camera and get a great black picture to use for iMovie ;)

a cool effect

not sure if this is what you guys are looking for, but I just went on a road trip and when editing it together I came up with a pretty cool "travel transition" that can help people follow along.

It's pretty simple, I just used the maps app and took screen shots of my GPS location zoomed out to the state level showing how far along I am on my trip. I then imported that screen shot into iMovie and applied the ken burns effect, then set the "start" to where I was traveling from last and the "end" to where my GPS blue icon says I am now. This creates a little travel animation which when spliced together with clips/pics of the location creates a nice little transition for your road trip.

Hope this helps someone :)
