So I'm curious, guys, has iMovie functions improved a lot in the past 3 years? I never bought it for iphone 3Gs because I had & still have ReelDirector which has been fantastic! (I never knew I could "create movies" (photo slideshows actually) until I discovered ReelDirector back in 2009. RD app is one of the big reasons I never updated the ios on 3Gs.
It has great text/caption options/font choices/sizes, B&W only (no color text), that you CAN time how long it will appear on any photo OR video clip (unlike what is described in this thread re iMovie).
It has TRIM & SPLIT video-cutting ability built in which works pretty great except it's hard to get down to the EXACT second you want but close enough (just use the audio FADE IN or OUT option to "wane out" a few seconds at beginning or end of a clip that you can't cut out). Sometimes I use Video Ninja app instead solely for trimming & import that clip into ReelDirector.
RD has tons of transitions to choose from; it has opening & closing titles/text options; still, pan & zoom options timed to your choice length; add a zillion photos or video clips if you want (but true, can't place a photo INSIDE or on top of a video clip, would have to split the video clip & add photo between the clips); etc.
Export to camera roll, email, or upload to youtube from inside the app. If too big to email, RD has a compression option but I never use it/rather preserve quality.
For color backgrounds for text, I use Layers app (which is a photo layering app) which also has a full spectrum of colors, so just color a blank screen in the color of your choice, black included, save to photos & import to ReelDirector. You can also use any of the hex color code sites to find zillions of colors, zoom on whichever color, snap a screenshot of it, & import that to ReelDirector. I've also merely searched google for photos of silk & satin cloth in whatever color I want. Those make nice "luxurious" backgrounds for text. Etc. Etc.
Old complaints re ReelDirector in App Store were mostly due to (1) When people updated to ios4+ it broke the app they said; (2) must render to preview; true, a pain, but for a 3Gs phone RD makes beautiful videos, surprisingly.

So I'd love to know how many newer better movie-making iphone apps are out there now in 2013? A lot? Or only iMovie? And has iMovie improved considerably since 2010?
Do Android phones have tons of great movie-making apps these days, at least as good as ReelDirector? (I'm not dumping my 3Gs iphone, nor upgrading it, until I know for sure. That's how valuable ReelDirector is to me. "Priceless."
SMART DEVS: For some unknown reason ReelDirector chose to stop upgrading their app awhile back. To me (a non-techie) it seemed too good, a great quality product, to abandon. It doesn't make sense. Even its icon is fantastic. Some dev should see about buying the rights to it & bring it forward to ios6-7. Why let all the work on that great app go to waste?
It's almost perfect as is, maybe add color-text ability, & make it work w/newer ios's. The only complaint I had with it concerned video clips of ORCHESTRA music. All other music rendered fine. But any Orchestra/Symphony music that reached a climax/crescendo, after rendering it would be static-y in those louder spots (even after turning audio way down before rendering).
Ok, so that's it. My 4-years-long "love affair" with ReelDirector. Sure hope there are newer better movie-making app options out there by now/late-2013 to replace it. If you know of any, please list them here & which ios's they work with. Thank you!
