You may want to revise your thinking. Unfortunately I had the opportunity to buy an iPhone opening night, and I wanted to sleep on it. Which ended up being a very bad decision because they are now completely sold out. But it made me think about waiting for the next version to come out. And then I started thinking how likely that was.

The iPod is due for another major revision, as is the Nano, and the iMac. All of these are the lower level, cheaper, consumer products that I believe Apple will announce in or around the Leopard release. Just in time for holiday season. But if Apple is revising all of those models, why would it upstage itself by releasing yet another version of the iPhone? And in doing so pissing off all the early adopters. Why would Apple want to bring the iPhone much closer to the iPod in terms of storage, when they can sell both and make even more profits.

All of the major downsides to the iPhone are hardware problems. Lack of 3G, GPS, etc etc. But Apple has already poured a lot of money into the current hardware. They aren't going to replace EDGE as soon as most people think. They just got ATT to bump up their speeds on it, which I'm sure cost a lot of money. 3G is also not really near ready for major consumer use because of ATT's pretty shoddy coverage support. So even if the phone had it, it'd be largely useless to most of us.
All of those features we'd all like signify a significant drain in battery life as well, which to workaround would mean refining an already new technology, which is extremely expensive and hard to do.

So, for consumers (not business users) now is without a doubt the best time to buy an iPhone. It's fun, it's new, it works, and it does everything you're going to need on a day to day basis. It will get better, but the interface of the iPhone allows such a seamless way of software and firmware updates, it's going to get better for all of us. Not just the v2 buyers.

This sounds like an advertisement, but really I'm just trying to get people over that hesitant fence that ended up leaving me with a 2-4 week wait for an iPhone, and very disappointed.

Yes, I was going to delay getting it for 2 weeks but on the 2nd day I was like hmm... maybe not.

So I went and stood in line at the Gateway Apple Store and grabbed a 4 GB phone finally! :) :apple: :D

Very well put.

All reasons I got on Friday and I'm not regretting it one bit.

The problem is that the iPhone is a magical device. Even the fabled Cingular 8125 has nothing on it.

the iPhone doesn't do the WAP internet like most smartphones. It provides the best view... for me, that convinced me enough.

Oh and the Google maps and cover flow too.

I agree 100%. I think you will see some aggressive upgrades to firmware and software that will address most issues and I think the next iPhone introduces will be a cheaper, smaller model, maybe based on the Nano for factor. I posted in another thread that I just dont see V2 of the iPhone for 12-18 months.

Yes, but how would an iPhone nano work if the screen is smaller?
like text input?

I really don't see how it could get any smaller and still display a keyboard. Screen space is about as tight as I would want right now.

i agree. it takes a little bit of getting used to inputting text on the current iPhone (i played with one yesterday - VERY NICE!). something as small as a nano would be an absolute nightmare to input stuff onto.

I wouldn't want it a whole lot smaller. I love the size of the screen, and it's much much slimmer than I thought it would be. Not that much thicker than a folded Razr. I also really like the weight, it's heavy enough that you know you're holding a nice piece of technology, not some cheap Nokia.

Just look at the blow-up pictures of the iPhone dissection. If you think Apple is in a hurry to redesign that thing, you're nuts.

I think 3G will be ready sooner than you think. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that apple will launch in Europe without 3G. Although according to some sources over in another thread, the iPhone already has 3G built in, just not activated.

I am waiting for 2nd gen to see if they finally get some missing features, but I am going into it full well knowing that I could be waiting until spring or longer. I'm very happy with my current phone and plan, so no rush here.

What? You with a device that fetches emails?!?! :D <ducking>

For Me

Honestly, I'm just hoping that by next summer we'll see:

$399 = 8 GB
$499 = 16 GB

I'm just guessing but I think it's pretty likely.

Like others here, I don't think we'll see many changes to the iPhone within the next year. But I think a price drop alongside a memory increse is pretty likely.

For various other reasons I wouldn't be buying one until December or January anyway. If I wait that long I figure I can wait a few more months to see if either of these changes transpire. I'm willing to bet at least one of them will...hopefully both.

Apple does sometimes update a product's specs not longer after the previous version is out. For example, the Apple TV began shipping in March with a 40GB drive, and 2 months later (in May) a new 160GB model was announced.

Not sure but I can tell you that there are a TON of people, teens mainly who are a HUGE demo for phones, who want a small phone. If Apple wants to really get the market in whole, they will need a smaller phone.

iWatch you buy your iPhones, believing in the hype-beast

In canada so no reason to get all worked up on all this frenzy.. I'm just sitting back watching and reading all about this release.. The phone is fun and cool.. Hip.. whatever.. though its still missing some functionality to be a real tool of the trade.

Just checking and filtering through 30+ emails a day is a chore on this thing (deleting etc.).. the size (4gb-8gb) is nothing when compared to the content we have within music and video.. and there's a couple other drawbacks I've been reading about.

Anyways.. ya there will be a version two and so on, and it will be better... especially after apple filters through all the reviews and complaints so far..

Version one, especially people who buy day one is for impatient people who want a new shiny toy to play with and show off.. iWant iWant iWant.. whatever.. though without them, we wouldn't have a test market for finding out what works and what doesn't. .. so buy away..

For just waiting a bit..
Over the last three days alone I've come to the realization that the phone is not worth having.. yet.. ( all it took was reading more about what people thought about it, what they liked, didn't)

Enjoy the iphone.. i'm sure its fun to play with..

Same here, I gave in.

Indeed, I was very very skeptical of the hype but when I saw how easy it was to surf the net and the huge video screen... I guess that I was more worried that there would be a wait time of 2-3 weeks just like the old 3G iPods and minis... so I didn't want to risk waiting :) :apple:

As an engineer, I would actually say that they'd love to redesign it as soon as possible, using more highly integrated chipsets. Anything to get it more powerful, use less power, and especially get cheaper to make. The chance for more sales and profit drives everything.

You only stop improving when the return on investment won't cut it.

I think it would more likely be:
$499 = 8GB
$599 = 16GB

History has shown that Apple usually updates the technology and keeps the price the same. Although, that is not necessarily true when the iPod FIRST came out, way back when. More so lately, though.

No.
As a matter of fact, I could care less about 3G or GPS. Here are a few show-stopping problems that I have with the iPhone:
1. Bluetooth dumbed down so that it works only for headsets. No contact syncing. No wireless modem capability. If I am paying $2100 to at&t for their unlimited data plan over the next 2 years, I better be able to use the data part of it with my laptop and have access to the "real" internet if I want to.
2. No visible filesystem, and no way to get stuff onto the phone from the internet. I want to be able to download a file and mail it to someone after making some changes, for example. Can't do it with the current iPhone OS.
3. Price. Both the phone and the plan. It WILL go down with v.2. Right now Apple is selling the iPhone to the early adopters who will pay ANYTHING to get their paws on it. Check Ebay and you shall see how much they are going for :) When all the hype will somewhat subside, both the phones and the plans will become cheaper - there is no way Apple will be able to sell these at this pricepoint forever

As you can see, none of the three major problems - at least for me - are hardware related. iPhone hardware is beautiful - it is a wonderful toy.
I just want them to fix Bluetooth before I will even think of buying one.

I've been trying to figure this one out, too - whether the iPhone would be treated as an Apple product or as a phone. Because phones are always more expensive when they come out, but then drop in price a few months later.. This isn't typical of Apple, however. Of course, if you remember the cost of the photo iPods when they first hit versus a few months after...

One thing's for sure, though.. 4 and 8gb is going to be laughable pretty soon here on a $500/$600 phone (considering how much the prices are coming down).. they're going to have to piss off the early adopters regardless or else take some sh*t from critics..
