I am so tempted.

My wife told me I could one if I wanted. But I've always been a v2 guy (except for the iMac, bought Feb 2006, and the MacBook, bought the day after they were announced). And I decided I couldn't justify the cost (the plan is ok, but I'm reluctant to spend $600 for the v1 - I would get the 8GB if I were buying).

Then today I got an unexpected $700 dividend from some stocks so that excuse is gone. Fate is telling me something.

I am so tempted.

I'm going to have to keep away from the local Apple store just in case I walk out with one.

I agree with the OP on most counts.

I don't see a significant hardware revision for at least 18 months. I do expect steady software upgrades and perhaps a Rev B motherboard with minor enhancements sooner than 18 months, but no sooner than 8 months.

There's plenty of untapped potential in the hardware that's already inside the iPhone, so why revise the hardware so quickly? It's something like the PS3 and XBox 360 -- the hardware is pretty advanced and will continue to support new features through software upgrades.

Having said this, I hope AT&T will accelerate its rollout of 3G to give Apple a good reason to produce a significant new version. Even though I have one now, I don't want to stymie the march of progress. It's like everything else in the computer world -- buy what you need now and upgrade when something significantly better is available...and maybe even skip a generation and go from Rev A to Rev C.

The discovery of glitches? The availability of better versions of current components? The completion of hardware features that weren't ready in time for the first release but will enable features that increase sales?

Personally, I'd be surprised if Apple had a new version out anytime soon. I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

I can see them releasing an "nano or mini" iphone at some point but it will probably have less "smartphone-y" capabilities like no web or no virtual keyboard. Probably keep coverflow though  Kind of like how you can't play video on the ipod nano even though you technically can...

iPod and Phone....agreed .....but plus text messaging. (for the young crowd) and priced accordingly.

phone + IM / text messaing only would priced accordingly would do serious damage to:

a) sidekick / tmobile
b) helious
c) and of course verizon.

Yes, but how would an iPhone nano work if the screen is smaller?
like text input?

The exact same way you can view videos on the current iPod Nano: it wouldn't.

The onscreen keyboard would be the 3x4 numeric keypad all current non-smart phones have (like mine.)

I don't think the iPhone Nano will ever come to be though.

I'm going to wait until after the Leopard launch in Oct, just to see what Apple is going to do. I want one so bad I can taste it, but I need a new car first so the $700 I'd spend on the iPhone is going toward that.

I don't know but i seem to remember hearing somewhere that sequels to the iPhone will come out quickly after it was released. Seeing how apple already has the basic product working and selling well, it shouldn't be hard to just work off that. I wouldnt be surprised to see in December or January iPhones with greater storage capacity and other minor upgrades, not to mention some price cuts. I'm sure apple will cut the price after they see a decrease in sales.

That is what I believe seeing as how on Nov 1st apple is getting into the Euro market and I doubt with a 2.5 iphone... Now apple may hold off on selling those until 2.5 stock is depleted but even then we are prob. looking at Jan? '08...

IMO

You can expect with the exception of G3 no updates well into '08, remember they will be hitting Asia with the iPhone in '08, after that then we will see an update.

Version one, especially people who buy day one is for impatient people who want a new shiny toy to play with and show off.. iWant iWant iWant.. whatever.. though without them, we wouldn't have a test market for finding out what works and what doesn't. .. so buy away..
*Ahem*. This is pretty insulting. Just because enthusiastic users who purchased the iPhone during the first week of release want an iPhone doesn't mean they simply want something to "show off and toy with". I bought mine because I wanted an iPhone.

well to bad for the V2 people...The iphone rocks and why w8 for such a great device...It does what it says awsome...If they come out with a V2 in the near future I can sell mine without a problem or heck give to the wife....You ought to run out and get if havent done already....LOVING MINE

Couple of other thoughts....I fully expect for the second genertion the be here by first of Jan/Feb...Appple has to keep up with the current market and there is still plenty of people that will buy or upgrade from what they already have...Its all about the money so dont full yourself into thinking it wont be soon....However, Apple has released a GREAT product now...Many have had glitches but out of several million it hasent been bad...Most have been user error...

As stated you can always get one now and then later sell V1 to bump into v2...I have already had people offer me 300 when the V2 comes out if/when it does. Everyone knows I like the newest and the best so putting their offers in now. I look at it like a lease...Your paying to drive and when something better comes along turn it in and drive some more...

Also V2 might not have everything you want so are you going to wait for v3 and v4???

I just hate to see you miss out on such a great product!!

By the way I have shown my phone to the techno savy and the lay (not techno savy) person. Each wanting to see the edge network. Both have stated they were impressed and wouldnt let that affect their decision making...Im loading Yahoo pages faster than 30 seconds in Fort Worth

:apple: :D

My plan precisely. :D

I agree with your comments but I would think the longer you wait the better your chances are to get a newer rev. on the circuit board/chips, etc. Kind of like what they are doing with the PS3. Firmware can't fix everything. They won't go public with the changes but they willl address any design flaws in the later runs of the phone. Now if they will just fix the business plans, I would jump in.

I dont recmomend this phone for the business user or doctor types...If will not do everything you need for it to do.

It will, as long as you don't need M$ exchange (which might be added) and proprietary app support (might be added).

Only thing I *really* want, besides flash enabled browsing and MMS, is longer battery life. I understand, for what it can do, the battery life is fine. But I'm averaging about 8 hours (some text messaging, a bit of music, one or two video podcasts and a bit of picture viewing). I like to use all of the features of miPhone, I really don't want to have to keep it in my pocket (and use it... like any ol' regular phone...) all day just to keep the batt from running out.

I agree, not a bad plan. I think I might have to do that.

I don't know. I bet they could do a pretty sweet iPhone nano and it would blow our socks off.

Smaller, candybar design. Full Touchscreen UI.

No Safari. No WiFi. No EDGE.

iPod video functions, SMS, Soft Keypad. I bet we'd be surprised how small Apple could make one of those with a 200 x 320 screen or similar. Still able to flick through contacts with a finger, still able to combine the cell phone with the iPod. Just no widgets that require internet access. For the right price, they could sell like crazy.

I still think the people that insist there is a major revision coming in less than 6 months do not understand the market. To succeed in this market, you need to get kids, period, end stop. Apple needs to get the tweeners, teens and college kids who can pay $199 but not $599. We know from history that the magic price for products to begin to achieve real penetration is $199.

Apple will be in no rush for 3G in the US, have you guys even bothered to look at the coverage map? I think there are 15 states with no coverage at all and another 15 that only have ONE city with any 3G at all. To put it into perspective, EDGE is available in over 13,000 cities... 3G is available in less than 175.

If an update comes soon, it will be more memory and some tweaks...not GPS and 3G.

ash =o)

Hmmm, this thread reminds of when I was fortunate enough to purchase an Xbox 360 in 2005. Everyone told me to wait wait wait for 6 months for the price drop. Yeah, some are still waiting, has to be coming soon right? LOL!! Meanwhile, I've played it like crazy, then sold it the day after I bought an Xbox Elite. I realize this is not apples to apples but nevertheless an example that it is possible for the iPhone to hold its price for a while even with a Rev B in the works.

BTW, I am an engineer at a company that makes one of devices in the iPhone. At work on Monday the jaws were dropping as co-workers saw the speed and ease of use on my iPhone. The basic sentiment was "Wow, I thought the commercials were "cooked" up a bit but I was wrong." Really most people were convinced with one pinch zoom, but engineers are suckers that way. I just about had to boot people from my office to get any work done! ;)

I stood in line a little while and purchased the 8G on 6:10pm on the 29th and I don't have a single ounce of regret.

the iPhone for me is still a dream. when using it... i dont think about flash, java, 3g, or exchange syncing. i just think about what i'm doing, kind of like in os x... the operating system becomes secondary... it does what you want, when you want, how you think it should be done. for me, it's a truly amazing device. anybody who compares it to any other cell phone on the market... truly is an ignorant person.

magnificent... thats a good word.
wow i love the iphone.

Honestly, I'm just hoping that by next summer we'll see:

$399 = 8 GB
$499 = 16 GB

HA! :D Keep waiting for that. If Apple can sell hundreds of thousands of phones just by the hype and fanboy nature alone why the hell will they lower the price? Steve does want to make more money for his company you know.

If Apple wants to really get the market in whole, they will need a smaller phone.

If they really wanted to get into the market they would give users a phone that can be used on all the networks and not just Cingular and their terrible service and no insurance. When the phone gets on Verizon's T-Mobile's and Sprint's networks then we will see what Apple can do in the phone industry. As of now... it is a good beginning... 5 year beta test has begun... call me in five years after I have enjoyed much of what a real phone can do sans the fancy (yet really cool) touch screen. I will pick up my iPhone on the Sprint network, get my unlimited data plan with unlimited text for $15 and voice (700 minutes) for $30 and PHONE INSURANCE for $5. The phone will finally be a real phone/PDA and good storage and will cost me $400.

really? apple could have kept selling the iPod at the $299 price point simply because it was an "iPod." but as I recall... the lowered the price $50... hmmm....

Also, If you're implying the iPhone is a revolutionary phone thats vastly ahead of any other phone on the market... you've got another thing coming. That would be kind of like saying OSX isn't revolutionary... I didn't buy the iPhone because it had an Apple symbol... I purchased it because its amazing. :apple:

I'm pretty sure selling half a million phones in one weekend has already gotten them into the market.  ;)
Also, the issue of insurance has NOTHING to do with Cingular (now the new AT&T). You don't think Verizon, Cingular, Sprint etc. insure their phones do you? No way. They use a third party insurance agency that wont insure the phone because it's too expensive- not over price- too expensive for the insurance company to make money off of. Also, I'd like you to show me the Sprint plan that gives you UNLIMITED DATA/TEXT MESSAGES... 700 MINUTES AND INSURANCE ON A $600 dollar phone... for $50/ month ;)
