I think 3G will be ready sooner than you think. There isn't a snowballs chance in hell that apple will launch in Europe without 3G. Although according to some sources over in another thread, the iPhone already has 3G built in, just not activated.

I am waiting for 2nd gen to see if they finally get some missing features, but I am going into it full well knowing that I could be waiting until spring or longer. I'm very happy with my current phone and plan, so no rush here.

I think this is absolutely correct. The US is so far behind in telecommunications technology compared to Europe and if the Washington Post is correct and Germany is getting an iPhone in November, it will most certainly be 3G compatible. Jobs himself stated with Walt Mossberg:

"The iPhone has built-in Wi-Fi and uses the EDGE high-speed data network. EDGE is pervasive throughout the U.S., and for many applications like email, maps, stocks and weather, it is plenty fast."

His comments already distinguish EDGE as a "US" marketplace feature. While the I totally agree that the iPhone will not be upgraded here in the US for a goodly amount of time, that does not preclude them from introducing a version tuned for foreign markets. The interesting thing to watch will be whether Apple is able to get the same concessions from European wireless players that it did to AT&T. Having phones "locked" to a network is definitely a US tradition. If Apple releases the phone unlocked in Germany, there will be a whole lot of VERY happy T-Mobile users here in the US... me included!

really? apple could have kept selling the iPod at the $299 price point simply because it was an "iPod." but as I recall... the lowered the price $50... hmmm....

Also, If you're implying the iPhone is a revolutionary phone thats vastly ahead of any other phone on the market... you've got another thing coming. That would be kind of like saying OSX isn't revolutionary... I didn't buy the iPhone because it had an Apple symbol... I purchased it because its amazing. :apple:

I'm pretty sure selling half a million phones in one weekend has already gotten them into the market.  ;)
Also, the issue of insurance has NOTHING to do with Cingular (now the new AT&T). You don't think Verizon, Cingular, Sprint etc. insure their phones do you? No way. They use a third party insurance agency that wont insure the phone because it's too expensive- not over price- too expensive for the insurance company to make money off of. Also, I'd like you to show me the Sprint plan that gives you UNLIMITED DATA/TEXT MESSAGES... 700 MINUTES AND INSURANCE ON A $600 dollar phone... for $50/ month ;)

You aren't saying anything new. Mac OS X isn't revolutionary... its better than the others... but it isn't revolutionary. I bought my Macs because they work better than the other OSes not because it was the greatest thing ever OMG LOLROFLMAO  People that think that need to wake up. The iPhone is far from revolutionary. It is better than the other but it isn't anything close to revolutionary. As a phone it is very limited and as a smart device it is extremely limited. The UI is by far the most 'revolutionary' piece of tech on the iPhone... not the touch screen... the UI... the software part of it. Which is another reason I choose Apple over many other companies. They know how to make good software. In my opinion... Mac OS X is just a drastically polished over Linux with with direction and guidance that works well with other techs seamlessly.

You purchased the iPhone because it was amazing. I would do the same if I could have better service from Cingular. It isn't a bad reason... but it is still just because it has the Apple logo on it. If it were $600 and made by Palm and only on the Sprint network would you switch from Cingular and a Blackberry that does everything it can't do just to have it? If the Foleo had the Apple logo on it and synced with the iPhone and was called the MacBook Mini but had the same specs would the tech world love it? Yes they would... because it has the Apple logo.

Sprint and Verizon offer insurance through another company but that is besides the fact. That doesn't prove anything at all. Sprint's insurance covers any phone I get... even that new Samsung worldwide phone, any Treo, any phone whatsoever. Cingular doesn't do this at all! No matter what insurance company Cingular has or doesn't have they aren't covering any smartphone, blackberries, or iPhones. There is no way in hell that I would buy a $350 Treo without insurance... so there is no way at all that I would buy a $600 that everyone can recognize from the hype without insurance. I don't have dumb cash so there is no way I am going to set myself up like that.

Selling half a million phones in a few days seems a bit 'not to good' in my opinion. All the fanboys went out buying their phones right away... now I am a bit worried that sales will start to dwindle in the next few months. The hype engine may continue to drive some sales for the less intelligent consumer but I don't think to many people that actually know about phone features are going to start switching or buying phones in the next few months. Apple may make their mark of 10 million phones by then end of next year (2009) but it will long going if they don't do the four things.

(1) fix the firmware issues with SMS, Flash, mobile modem
(2) Get a good service provider for Europe which has a way bigger market than the US. We got stuck with Cingular which is a very average company
(3) Find a way to unlock the phone or void the five year contract with Cingular. Apple will never be able to sell gobs of phones on a network that is no where near as fast as Sprint or Verizon.
(4) Make the phone for the power/business user who doesn't want some flashy toy... they want a flash mobile productivity device.

The plan that I describe is what I get from Sprint... I don't know if they still have it... I am pretty sure they don't. They have changed their service three times since I got my contract. I picked the Sprint America plan or something that gave me 500 minutes for $29.99 unlimited data with unlimited text for $15 an extra 100 minutes for $5 and this thing where I only pay an extra $5 for 100 minutes if I go over my minutes. Not to mention insurance for my phone which is $6 and no roaming for another $5. All together my bill never goes above $65. Cingular can't give me that and rollover minutes is a joke. People collect so many that they will never use them, then you switch plans and you loose them all so WTF. My contract hasn't changed since I got it 3 years ago.

In Summary.
(1) iPhone is great... UI is revolutionary... needs much improvement... worth waiting for Version 2.

(2) Apple is doing a good job in the cell market (the best in history) but it can and will do better once it is off of the Cingular network. Maybe version 2 will be able to run on CDMA through some contract renegotiating with Cingular.

(3) Insurance on phones works.... why is Cingular so retarded not to get some insurance company to get the phones insured.

(4) $600 is not a bad price for the Apple iPhone but the only reason it is justified is because it has the Apple logo on it. I am glad that is is $600 because it will make the other phones on the market look cheaper... combined with it's limited phone features the other smart phones look full featured and well worth the price.

I think the 3G iPhone will be around reasonably soon. Launching the iPhone in the US with EDGE was logical given the shaky 3G coverage, however in the European and Asian markets where 3G is the standard, I see the 3G model being used for launch. This will account for part of the long delay. I wouldn't be surprised if the 3G iPhone is used here in Australia, too. Our 3G coverage is roughly on par with our GSM coverage (and am I wrong in thinking that most 3G devices have a GSM receiver anyway? I know that my archaic Z1010, my old Nokia N80, and my new O2 Atom Life all can connect to UTMS/HSDPA or GSM).

A 3G model about a year after the original US launch makes sense. I'm sure AT&T and Apple would LOVE to get their iPhone customers to do an "early upgrade" half way through their contract. I know our providers here start pushing early upgrades at the 12 to 18 month mark of a 24 month contract!

3G will be launched soon for iphone

Because of my travels, I have experienced my cingular 8525 tethered to my laptop at 3G (DSL speeds) on a bullet train in Japan.

Because Japan is the 2nd biggest economy in the world, I believe Apple will try to launch ASAP in that market. And there's no way in hell that they will launch it without 3G.

Of course, the network is totally different in Japan/Korean than here in the US. But if I was Apple, I would concentrate on the 2nd biggest economy.

For those of you who have lived in Japan or traveled there, you know what i am talking about... their phone is very advanced, and their network is very fast....
but nothing like the Iphone UI and the browser.... and most importantly, it's cool.

I have experienced 3G network in OC using my Cingular 8525 (DUAL 3G, so works in Japan and USA) and 3G in Japan.

3G speed in OC is okay, but the problem was the browser.. IT SUCKED... wasn't that good. so doesn't matter if it's 3G.. the whole package needs to be complete. wihch i think apple have done it with the 1st gen iphone.

I was thinking about waiting for V2 as well or at least 3G, but now.. just ordered one because if 3G is patchy ( which it is) then doesn't matter if your phone is 3G.. it will just drain more battery life...

haha.. wife will get my EDGE.. when 3G version that works for US and Japan comes out!!

my 2 cents...

I posted in another thread that I just dont see V2 of the iPhone for 12-18 months.
ash =o)

I hope this is true cause my parents wont let me get one til my contract expires which is exactly 18 months from now. That sucks that I have to wait but at least I get v2.

You may want to revise your thinking. Unfortunately I had the opportunity to buy an iPhone opening night, and I wanted to sleep on it. Which ended up being a very bad decision because they are now completely sold out. But it made me think about waiting for the next version to come out. And then I started thinking how likely that was.

The iPod is due for another major revision, as is the Nano, and the iMac. All of these are the lower level, cheaper, consumer products that I believe Apple will announce in or around the Leopard release. Just in time for holiday season. But if Apple is revising all of those models, why would it upstage itself by releasing yet another version of the iPhone? And in doing so pissing off all the early adopters. Why would Apple want to bring the iPhone much closer to the iPod in terms of storage, when they can sell both and make even more profits.

All of the major downsides to the iPhone are hardware problems. Lack of 3G, GPS, etc etc. But Apple has already poured a lot of money into the current hardware. They aren't going to replace EDGE as soon as most people think. They just got ATT to bump up their speeds on it, which I'm sure cost a lot of money. 3G is also not really near ready for major consumer use because of ATT's pretty shoddy coverage support. So even if the phone had it, it'd be largely useless to most of us.
All of those features we'd all like signify a significant drain in battery life as well, which to workaround would mean refining an already new technology, which is extremely expensive and hard to do.

So, for consumers (not business users) now is without a doubt the best time to buy an iPhone. It's fun, it's new, it works, and it does everything you're going to need on a day to day basis. It will get better, but the interface of the iPhone allows such a seamless way of software and firmware updates, it's going to get better for all of us. Not just the v2 buyers.

This sounds like an advertisement, but really I'm just trying to get people over that hesitant fence that ended up leaving me with a 2-4 week wait for an iPhone, and very disappointed.

Most of the iPhone's issues are software related, not hardware. I really don't see iPhone v2.0 until end of 2008, or Q1 of 2009.

jUTS LIKE THE PS3 AND HOW CRIPPLED IT WAS AT THE BEGINNING
and how rapidly it has expanded since then. I can see apple going the same route slowly implementing new features with software updates which makes the purchase sweeter with every update.

I just did not see me passing up a full internet/email/phone/ music video playing sms messaging IPOD.
Since i no longer had my macbook pro this little device have become my main mobile internet device and the best thing it fits in my pocket...

Some poeple are waiting for v2 and some are for v3 but all i have to say is while you wait for it im ejoying it now.

Thank god i decided to buy it-i can be on the internet/listening to music when i recieve a call music fades talk and browse the internet when im done the music comes back and i stay browsing all in 1 device
...

Im sorry for sounding like a commercial but i absolutely love this thing....and i was 1 of the ipohone haters you can say...when i use my blackberry curve it feels so outdated other companies bettter step thier mobile os up or we will soon see the iphone on top like its father the ipod.
I see the iphone being updated in 12-18 months teh cell phone market is way diffrent then any other market...Usually cell phones get updated every 1-2 years i believe

I think there will be faster revisions due to the fact the mobile industry rolls devices about every six months these days. Just because every market might not have 3g is no reason not to launch since the device will roll to EDGE or GSM when there is no 3g. It is the same with CDMA as every location doesnt have evdo; therefore they switch to 1xrtt when it isn't available. My guess is we will see a 3g iPhone by Christmas. I like my iPhone and posted this message from it.

Don't jinx us by comparing iPhone to ps3. :)

It is funny how some folks claim that Apple should have included 3G with the iPhone.

The simple fact remains that the U.S. lags behind Europe and Asia, and has yet to have sufficient broad coverage of 3G to justify the inclusion in the iPhone.

Also, some demands GPS in the iPhone -- but have you actually used a GPS device? It is a power hog and it is less than what it is touted to be.

The iPhone as it is is the best combination for broad consumer use in the U.S.

Features do need to be added in software updates, however.

Even ATT wireless who I'm NOT arguing is the WORST cellular provider in the country behind Metro PCS has 3G in around 160 cities. Verizon and Sprint essentially have total 3G coverage, with Sprint already rolling out its 3.5G network- which will be faster then even its European competition. Honestly, choosing GSM was ridiculous as it's already been proven that GSM simply cannot handle a constant high-speed data flow like CDMA can. If the iPhone were offered on Sprint or Verizon... I pick it up in a millisecond... however as it stands its a good enough device that I am willing to subject myself to ATT's sub-par service.

...

*Ahem*. This is pretty insulting. Just because enthusiastic users who purchased the iPhone during the first week of release want an iPhone doesn't mean they simply want something to "show off and toy with". I bought mine because I wanted an iPhone.

My Apologies.. guess I was a little to rash on that one.. all that iPhone talk was really getting to me.

I don't know about him, but my contract was up and my choice had nothing to do with being first.

In my opinion it was the best phone available at the time, shortcomings and all.

As far as 3G coverage and stuff in Europe...I think people forget just how large the United States is.

I'm sure if we had telco's that were isolated to, say, Ohio, which is roughly the size of iceland, you'd see wall to wall 3G or better with the same or better coverage you get in Europe or elsewhere.

The US is simply not Europe. Let's compare apples to apples or the discussion is moot except for idle speculation.

Interesting points

You bring up some interesting points on why one should buy one now, rather than wait until v2. But I must disagree.

The one thing keeping me from plopping down $600 for what is basically an EDGE device with a fancy modern human interface is, well, EDGE. AT&T does, in fact, have a 3G network in place - HSDPA i think is the acronym - but to access it on the iPhone would take up too much power. For now.

The next version of the iPhone, I suspect, would have hardware installed that would be able to connect to AT&T's 3G network, but draw less power. I'm sorry, but no firmware upgrade is going to give you access to the new network. And boy are you going to **** your pants in 2008 when they release that new version. $600 dropped for a buggy, obsolete phone.

I'll wait for v2. I'm in no hurry to watch movies on my mobile device. I can wait for a device that actually accesses the internet in a sane speed.

That's just it. I'm glad you said that. I don't think many of the people here really know what the term '3G' really means. 3G is an acronym for third generation data! It's not a technology, it's not an alternative to GSM. It's a completely seperate overlying network from the GSM voice network, it's on a seperate carrier band from the voice network! If a 3G iPhone is released for ATT, it'll still have a GSM transceiver because that is what is used for voice. The only time the 3G part is active is when you are accessing DATA in a 3G area. ATT's 3G network is the smallest of the national carriers. For people to say that the 'US' is behind for a 3G rollout is incorrect, what they really mean is 'Cingular/ATT' is behind in it's 3G rollout. Sprint and Verizon both have almost blanket coverage of their areas with 3G data, EVDO. Only when you are out in the sticks do you drop down to 1xRTT for data. Major metro areas even have EVDO rev A, which is deemed 3.5G by the industry. ATT's network is UMTS/HSDPA and UMTS is another name for W-CDMA, or wideband CDMA... That's right, the migration path for GSM networks to go to fast data is WCDMA. So it goes as follows:

GSM networks, voice is GSM, data goes from GPRS (2G) to EDGE (2.5G) to UMTS/HSDPA (3G).

CDMA networks, voice is CDMA2000, data goes from 1xRTT (2G, still on the voice carrier, not a seperate network) to EVDO (3G) to EVDO rev A (3.5G) to EVDO rev B(4G) to EVDV (fast as hell).

Not this thread in particular, but there is a lot of misguided posts on this subject on this forum when fans of apple (I am one myself) feel the need to defend EDGE. EDGE is the best that ATT could offer without apple having to implement a seperate WWAM UMTS/HSDPA chipset to the iPhone.

It will, as long as you don't need M$ exchange (which might be added) and proprietary app support (might be added).

Only thing I *really* want, besides flash enabled browsing and MMS, is longer battery life. I understand, for what it can do, the battery life is fine. But I'm averaging about 8 hours (some text messaging, a bit of music, one or two video podcasts and a bit of picture viewing). I like to use all of the features of miPhone, I really don't want to have to keep it in my pocket (and use it... like any ol' regular phone...) all day just to keep the batt from running out.

Man, my battery life most be really good then. I am getting about 2 days usage between charges and that is using iPod for about 3-4 hours a day min, surfing just on occassion, photo viewing, txting, and phone calls.

I'm not sure why you think the sales were a bit 'not too good' considering it had a debut better than any other cell phone that AT&T has ever had. Also all the analysts are predicting that Apple will easily reach their goal of 10 million iPhones in 2008 even considering a sales drop off. I also don't know why you refer to the people who are buying the phone as "less intelligent" considering that everyone I have shown my iPhone to wants one. Sure it has some features that are missing, but most of those can easily be added by software updates. Everything that the iPhone is lacking isn't a deal breaker for anyone I have shown the iPhone too. I was going to try and wait, but once I used one at the Apple Store I had to get one. It does everything I want it to do. I personally don't care that much about 3G as it isn't widely deployed and I am not on the internet that much. Not everyone needs the phone to do everything in the world. For me I needed a new phone and a new iPod. So for me it was a great choice. I could get an awesome phone that did everything I needed and more plus get an iPod included in it. And if you compare the price of a smartphone + an iPod Nano, you will see it is close to the price of the iPhone. So the price was easily justified for me.

I'm among those still on the fence but I'm not holding out for or expecting to see a significant price drop in 2008. The iPhone is already selling out at its current price and FLASH memory isn't going to get significantly cheaper in the next year. Apple has no motivation to drop the price. As far as EDGE, you're forced to pay for AT&T's data network with all iPhone plans but you're not allowed access to AT&T's fastest data network (where it's available). That's a legit rub. The comment about early adopters getting a buggy phone doesn't seem that persuasive given that there haven't been a huge number of show-stopping bugs reported and free software updates will bring fixes along with even more functionality.

In canada so no reason to get all worked up on all this frenzy.. I'm just sitting back watching and reading all about this release.. The phone is fun and cool.. Hip.. whatever.. though its still missing some functionality to be a real tool of the trade.

Just checking and filtering through 30+ emails a day is a chore on this thing (deleting etc.).. the size (4gb-8gb) is nothing when compared to the content we have within music and video.. and there's a couple other drawbacks I've been reading about.

Anyways.. ya there will be a version two and so on, and it will be better... especially after apple filters through all the reviews and complaints so far..

Version one, especially people who buy day one is for impatient people who want a new shiny toy to play with and show off.. iWant iWant iWant.. whatever.. though without them, we wouldn't have a test market for finding out what works and what doesn't. .. so buy away..

For just waiting a bit..
Over the last three days alone I've come to the realization that the phone is not worth having.. yet.. ( all it took was reading more about what people thought about it, what they liked, didn't)

Enjoy the iphone.. i'm sure its fun to play with..

How many GBs do cell phones have in general? So 8GBs is not sufficient? Please stop comparing the iPhone to the iPod, folks. It's a PHONE with an iPod feature. On other phones, avg. 4GB max memory via expansion cards, that feature is called a music player or media player. Yet no one complains that the "Chocolate" phone doesn't have 16GB. Ridiculous.

Re. those of us who have to have it on day one to "show off," well, only if you are impressed is it showing off. I didn't wave it in the air at work. People SWARMED to my desk...and they still do. TWO people bought the iPhone after playing with mine. I didn't show off nor encourage them to buy it.

And as a 1st adopter, yeah I am one of the testers. But it's my money, I am VERY happy. It has less functionality than my 8525, but i realize that I never USED a lot of functions on my 8525. I'll buy the 2nd iPhone version as well if when it comes out if it's also the most innovative cell phone for MY wants and needs.

I take it you use a cell phone without any features at all, right? No camera or any of that fancy "show off" stuff. Just a raw phone with a numeric keypad for dialing as we all should - blah.

Why I got the iPhone

I have to start by saying that I am a Windows User and when the iPhone was announced I said that there was no way I would get one and would ONLY BUY a Windows Mobile 6 phone. All my prior phones were non-pda phones. Late last year I decided I would get a pda phone so that I could get email for business purposes. Other features such as Contacts and Calendar are a plus. I need to monitor support email. After looking at various phones during the 1st half of this year I decided I would get the Verizon xv6800 (which is still not released). Had Verizon released the phone I would have got it before the iPhone was released (one for me and my wife). However, once the iPhone came out my wife and I went to test it at a Apple store and we were sold. I am still willing to review WM6 Phones whenever a new model is released. However, it would have to be a touch screen phone that is as slim and as big (screen) as the iPhone. I will also have to have all the features of the iPhone. It is not how many features you have it is the features that are the most important to you that matter. I have been using it with Yahoo Push email for that last couple of weeks and I love it. Also, I am saving $20 per month one EACH phone for unlimited data compared to what it would have cost me on Verizon. Since I am a big Microsoft fan I really hope someone will come out with a WM6 Device modeled after the iPhone (touch screen). I have seen reviews of HTC Touch but it is smaller. Maybe the Prada. Of course these phones are not available yet though normal channels.

if you want me to believe you purchased the iPhone as soon is it came out SIMPLY because you wanted one and NOT because you wanted to be one of the first people to have an iPhone... you've got another thing coming.

Not true here either. Only closest friends know I have one. And I go into a corner and hide if I have to use it in public <grin>. I don't like that sort of attention.

I waited 6 months (with a blank check for my birthday) because I wanted the phone and felt it would suit my needs. It has surpassed all of my (two) needs...

I won't go on and on as I've posted elsewhere...but I love this phone!
I think that unless a person NEEDs something that the iPhone can not deliver, waiting for V2 is just denying yourself a lot of satisfaction and joy (possibly in vain).
