Every Torrent site (legal or illegal) has a FAQ. It depends on which site you go to, so no one can tell you for sure what ports to open up. Third, no one knows what kind of router you have, so if you don't know how to open ports already on the router and your firewall, we won't be of much help. Fourth, with BT you have to upload at a good rate to download at a good rate.

I just discovered Transmission last night. I find it better than Azureus since it doesn't cause the whole OS to crash every time I open it.

Ok, you have to have enough RAM for it to run well, but otherwise it's the best for configuring things how you want and it's the most compatible and reliable client (as far as reporting stats, not bombarding the tracker with update requests unnecessarily, etc. are concerned). Using other clients usually means limited options and/or too many bugs. People on Windows like utorrent, but it's not gonna be ported to Mac OS X anytime soon.
Azureus works for me as it lets me cap the upload bandwidth. Used to be, with the BitTorrent client, that my net would grind to a hault due to all the outbound traffic. Now I can still share, but cap it at something that won't make my intarweb useless.
like janey mentioned above... Azureus is superior to anything on the mac... a bit of a hog but you wont get faster dl's with anything else...
I have to 3rd (or 4th) Transmission. I've used Azureus, and while it's great to have such flexibility, I've only found it more useful than other clients in that I can choose to only download certain files.
Transmission is maturing wonderfully, and while updates aren't released every day, they actually add something tangible. You can easily control upload speed, download speed, seed until ratio, and what port to use in the latest Transmission. For most files and most people that's plenty of customization.
But the day Azureus is OS X "native" (argh Java!) I'll probably switch back...

Azureus has the most options and features, and is pretty much the "best" one out there, but I certainly don't notice better speeds on az than on Transmission.
I still prefer Transmission, same speeds as AZ for me, and it is just so simple quick and easy, that I love it for that reason, plus the "pause all/ resume all" feature is so simple, yet so unbelievably handy...
And I still have to force quit AZ everytime to get it to shut down, I asked a question in these forums as to why the heck it is like that, but no one posted any suggestions...

I use Azureus as my main torrent client. Yes, it is slow but it is quite reliable and most private trackers recommend using Azurues. You might encounter problems using Transmission or Acquisition or Bits-on-wheels with some trackers.
Tomato Torrent is another excellent client. It's very light on the system and gets the job done.

Tranmission may be user friendly but it isn't a very good client. It has problems connecting to a lot of trackers and it's download speeds are slower. If you want a small lightweight client there's Tomato Torrent, but AZ is probably the best there is.
Sure, AZ seems to be getting a lot of good reviews here. However when I donloaded it there was no way that it was going to work for me.
I've downloaded it twice and deleted it twice. Really dont like that its in Java, seems to mess with my ibook. Also there was no communication happening. I followed their FAQ to the letter and still no hope. Even just stopped my firewall completely and still nothing.
Now I am using bittorrent and there was no set up issues what-so-ever. Just my to cents/pence.

I use it. Its not flash, but it is rock solid and eats little processor time.

If you don't torrent a lot, what is SOOOOOOOO bloody wrong with using mainline (the official bittorrent client, comes with a mac-ified gui)? If you torrent regularly and still hate azureus, why is it that you can't somehow believe that beauty is only skin deep? If you're a dev who bittorrents (ack, hypocrisy) maybe you should consider contributing to the utorrent mac port so you can have the prettyness of transmission powered by a backend rivaling azureus?
I'm not a java fangirl, but sometimes java can be absolutely beautiful.
Also, might I add, that on sites that matter, that usually require invites at the very least, most mac clients are banned because they're beta and/or crap, with usually the two (and only) allowed clients being azureus and mainline. Sooo, I'd watch out if i were you

Comments? Well you know what you shouldnt download, anything that is copyrighted, you also know that there are a heck of a lot of users that do this.
Basically you have to decide what to use if for. I heard talk of some of the other clients or was it torrent search sites that were being kept an eye on by the authorities, but I forget which they were. Does anyone know?

The only of those problems I've ever seen is misreporting of stats. Somehow it gets up to reporting GBs or something, but that may have been fixed in 0.6. I've only used one site that uses a ratio system, and it doesn't make a difference because both the upload and download values are contorted proportionately. Does anyone use or have opinions on Bits on Wheels?
I am hoping that somebody can help me with Azureus. I download and install the latest version on my Intel iMac, and when I try to run the program it bounces in the dock a few times and then just closes, no windows open or anything. Does anyone know how to fix this?
