I am hoping that somebody can help me with Azureus. I download and install the latest version on my Intel iMac, and when I try to run the program it bounces in the dock a few times and then just closes, no windows open or anything. Does anyone know how to fix this?

The latest Intel-friendly build is here.

Does anyone use or have opinions on Bits on Wheels?

I've used Bits on Wheels for over a year now and I love it. It's very simple and has never let me down.

There is a difference between ease of use and lacking things to use.

One thing Transmission doesn't lack is the ability to shut itself down...which for me Az does lack...But I use AZ now all the time anyway. It is the best one out there, I now realize this thanks to the many posts pointing this out.....

i wish we had uTorrent too.....:(

I am using Transmission. I don't like Azureus.

On my old iBook and Powerbook I used Bits on Wheels. It was great. Alas there is no UB for it last time I checked.

I tried Bits On Wheels almost a year ago for a few days - it looks really cool. BUT, it just doesn't cut it! If you compare the features, there's nothing that can beat Azureus. Period. If I had to choose looks vs. features, I'd go for the latter. All the other clients may probably boast only about their looks - that doesn't help if you cannot use it or if it's not flexible enough.

Although people may badmouth Java and Azureus, as far as I'm concerned it is the king of BT clients available - nothing even comes close to it. There was a time I used to hate Azureus and used to use Bit Tornado (on Windows). Once I gave Azureus a fair chance and tried it for a few days, I could not go to any other client (I have never tried uTorrent on Windows since Azureus seems good enough).

On the Mac, the official BT client is too "simple" and inflexible for me. It's the same story with Bits On Wheels, Tomato Torrent, etc. I haven't had a look at Transmission since I've heard only negative comments from the people who run trackers. I guess it would need another year or so to mature.

For those who have trouble with Azureus, I'd also suggest re-installing the Java runtime environment before re-installing Azureus.

We just need uTorrent for the mac. Mac is so great at everything, and yet we're stuck with ****** Azureus (I personally use it but I still don't like it). I have a PC that i essentially only use for my 300gb much collection and tons of videos... And its uTorrent for me all the way on there. I even try to get most of my mac torrents on my pc and just copy them over to my mac because its just so much faster and a much nicer interface.

ALL HAIL UTORRENT!

I use Transmission as it gets by far the best download speeds (it could well be coincidence, but I've been getting consistently better speeds since I switched to it).

BitTorrent was horribly slow, I never got more than 80Kb a second, on a 3Mb line; even with plenty seeds.

Bits on Wheels is certainly interesting, if nothing else.

Azureus, for me, was slow, buggy and ugly.

My biggest problem now though is I get fast downloads but very, very slow uploads (even though I have a 3Mb uplink, with all clients); if it takes 1 hour to download a file, I might need to leave it upload for a week to get my ratio back to parity.

Azureus supports UPnP pretty well, which I can't say for any of the others. At one point the beta mainline client said it supported UPnP but it never seemed to work. If they've updated it I'll give it another go (can't check now; filter at work), but until someone else comes up with a good UPnP implementation I'm sticking with Azereus.

You have to try utorrent!!! It's azureus without the bloat, and its one of the most gorgeous apps i have ever seen :D

Now, for all those people saying one client is faster than another...no, no that's not how bittorrent works..
it's totally up to individual torrents and the peers on the torrents and the tracker software and the teeny tiny settings on your bittorrent client and where you got the torrent from, and what time of day you opened it and SO MANY THINGS!!! SO MANY!!! Just because there's lots of seeds doesn't mean anything! Or if availability is high high high :(

There are some real ********s out there that dislike uploading with bittorrent and will choke their client to upload at stupid speeds like 1kb/s, if you had 100 seeds going at 1kb/s each with like 50 peers, what kind of speeds are you gonna get? CRAPPY ONES!!

I mean, I honestly have no idea what some of you guys mean cause a lot of my torrents max out my 3mbps line, no matter the client {azureus, utorrent, mainline, tomato}.

@whooleytoo i seriously recommend not using transmission on sites that keep track of stats, too many horror stories and whiners regarding transmission f***ing up their stats and getting them banned..

Hey Thanks Janey, that's a great looking plugin, but I was actually just looking for a way to shut down Azureus..as in Azureus>quit Azureus...doesn't work for me. It just stays open, but anyway, I'm done asking that question because I seem to be the only one with this issue.

For the record, I've never had a single mis reported stat using Transmission, and I still prefer it, even it is worse, just pretty looking, foolish, and wrong...

Azureus just crushes my system, everything slows down, acts sluggish, it's like AZ is a vaccum sucking the life out of everything while it's running...

But I use if for the sites that have banned transmission...

Ah yes.. I LOVE uTorrent. Someone needs to port it quick. And Tomato Torrent really sucks. It's (literaly I think) an exact copy of regular Bittorrent with a few little extras.

Ah that's weird. I thought you wanted it to automatically turn it off after you finished seeding or something.

And yeah I would agree with ya about Azureus's system hogging, but you could always use mainline or tomato torrent. tomato's just a gui wrapper for the bittorrent core and rarely has issues with sites.

utorrent unfortunately doesnt have a mac developer at the moment :( sucks a lot.

I just discovered Transmission last night. I find it better than Azureus since it doesn't cause the whole OS to crash every time I open it.
Do you have an intel mac? There is a modified version available to fix this problem.

Nope it works again. They reinstated it yesterday.

Ba ba ba WHA!!!

I hope this is true.

if it is, I can retire the system vacuum aka Azureus for good....

hey Janey, can you build us a Mac version of Utorrent? Come on....you know you can....:)

***edit**** I just checked....Transmission is back ON!!!!! YES!!! I'm going to enjoy flushing AZ down the trash.....

W00T !!

alright. i am a recent switcher (as in like 2 days ago). i used AZ on my windows computers, and i just downloaded it for my mac, and had no idea what to do.

the little froggy guy came up and whatever, and i went to a site to download a movie. now, what i used to do was... the small torrent file would download first and i would click 'open', then the AZ client would open up and start downloading the movie file.

this time, the small torrent file downloaded, i clicked open, and nothing happened. i dont know if i am doing something wrong because the mac is way different.. or.. err im stumped. anyone help please?

**edit** after rereading this thread a couple times, i think i may try a different client than AZ. something simple will do for me. but if anyone can still give me some pointers about anything i need to do diff with mac clients, i would greatly appreciate it!

thanks!

I'm going to guess it's because you have an Intel Mac.

Yes, the MacBook Pro runs off of an Intel processor.

Download this version of Azureus instead.
