It's been reported that Apple was unable to implement Touch ID under the screen for the next iPhone, and some have speculated that it'll be on the back of the phone.

Let's say the sensor is on the back, but it's seamlessly hidden in the Apple Logo. Perfect placement for your finger, and great way to keep the sleek design.

Thoughts?

I'll buy you the iPhone 8 myself if that's the case

As much as i hope it is somehow implemented into the design because i do not want to see touch id go, but I can not see how "face id" will work consistently in a dark room, for example bed side before bed or outside going to your car. I also do not see how apple pay will work better with this design, but who knows I guess my imagination is not very good lol. I know Apple would not change it it unless it is for the better, but its definitely going be something new to learn, which is very exciting.

I think threads like these show how people are still in denial. I have slowly and grudgingly accepted we will no longer have Touch ID.

I don't know if it'll be "better", but I know Apple will tell me it is.

I have other reservations about FaceID but I'm not really worried about it not working in the dark. It will use infrared.
But yeah, I'm really curious to see how Apple Pay will be implemented effectively. I'm also not convinced that swipes and gestures will be as good as having an actual home button.

Yeah, just like not having a headphone jack is better. I'm starting to get tired of Apple's "improvements".

Touch ID exists on the iPhone 7S/7S+. You want Touch ID, you're welcome to purchase those models!

And there's where I feel stuck. I want a (near) bezel-less iPhone with a large screen but small footprint, but I also want TouchID. It sucks knowing that I'll be missing a feature that I want no matter what I choose. I would have been okay even if they put it on the back!

Gotta make compromises: want a bezel-less iPhone, go iPhone 8. Want TouchID, go 7S/7S+. Want a device that has FP sensor, Facial Recognition, etc, go Galaxy S8/S8+/Note 8.

Pfft. We only have to make compromises because Apple makes us. I would also like a device with a headphone jack, for that matter.

Ah well. In the end I will weigh my options and make a choice. No regrets.

or wait for what Apple has in store for us next year. Simple.

This is already my 3rd year of waiting. I'm not complaining, because as I said, I will always weigh my options and make a choice that best suits me, but I'm hoping I don't have to go another year saying, "well, maybe there'll be something better next year..."

Apple doesn't make you. They just offer less and less, charge more and more. People either pay to play with their OS and services or move onto greener pastures. If you want iOS, you can still get the SE with a headphone jack and a lot of the modern amenities. Only thing is a small screen, but that's no compromise if you look at the PPI quantity or couldn't care about the size.

Best of everything seems to be on the Galaxy.

4" screen is absolutely a compromise! In fact, for me it's more of a deal breaker than no headphone jack or no TouchID. I can learn to live with those, I'm sure, but going back to such a small display is actually the opposite of what I want.

Basically, I want an iPhone, with minimal bezel, a headphone jack, and a home button with TouchID. I might as well ask for a unicorn! :D

At first, I didn't think it was a compromise on my own purchasing. Now that I have a SE, I cannot handle dealing with 4" as a daily driver. It depends on the person because a ton of people gave up their 4.7" and 5.5" screens to go back to a 4" one because it is a miniature powerhouse.

I like the idea that Apple has given us a 4 inch display, when most smart phone manufacturers have grown apart and graduated into larger displays. It's nice they give us this option for those who are not compelled by the growing larger (Phablet) like smart phones. That said, the 4 inch display for me is rather too small, when the 4.7 inch iPhone is more doable with a better display and larger variant, but the iPhone Plus has sold me the more I use it with the battery life and larger, more crisp display for reading.

What's up with the confusion with how it'll work in the dark? It's rumored to use infrared light, it has nothing to do with visible light or even the camera at all. It works just the same as your TV remote which also works in the dark

on the back is the worst solution of all and i'm happy apple won't do this!

How's it worse than nothing at all? If you absolutely hate using it on the back, then all you would have to do is not use it, and you're no worse off, but many people wouldn't mind.

Even if the room is pitch black there should be no issue with FaceID.

There will be no Touch ID, the devices that are going around showing Touch ID on the back are simply clones not the proper iPhone 8. My guess is that the 7s and 7s Plus will still have Touch ID in the same place, the iPhone 8 will not have it at all. Touch ID is going away and will be replaced altogether with next years iPhone (my opinion) this year the 8 will not have it and instead go all in with facial recognition, i'm looking forward to it.

My thought is it is not going to happen. Will be interesting to see how all of this will effect ApplePay and if the banks will be convinced of the security features. If not the banks will pull out of ApplePay.
