I am interested to see what Face ID would do to the lock screen with notifications, etc. If I lift my phone to read a notification, I assume Face ID would immediately unlock the phone not allowing me to read any notifications. We shall see.

All leaks and rumors in years prior missed key and significant features as well.

Nothing so significant as a major hardware feature. No so close to release. I want there to be TouchID as much if not more than anyone here, but there's a practically 0% chance that it's been overlooked or hidden all this time.

Unlocking the phone doesn't mean that it has to automatically take you away from the lock screen. Likely, seeing your face will unlock the ability to swipe to the home screen.

I can wear sunglasses and use Touch ID.
Who says that you will not be able to use Sunglasses and Face ID? Do you really think that Apple, in California with Sun all the time, forgot to support sunglasses? Face ID does not work with the Iris. It works with different anchors on your face. If you are not wearing sunglasses covering your whole face there will still be enough anchors for Face ID to detect. Just like Touch ID where only a part of the finger (and with different angels) is enough.

It just annoys the heck out of me that you guys think that Apple didn't think about stuff like that. Touch ID was ahead of the competition. There were already finger scanners out there but when Touch ID launched, it was so much more advanced than anything out there and the competition is still catching up (4 years later). According to reports Face ID will be 2 years ahead of it competition. Apple knows security. Apple does security. Face ID will be sooo much better than Touch ID. But sure. Go ahead and whine about the lack of Touch ID before we even know all the capabilities of Face ID.

Potential issues I see with Face ID.
1) I use raise to wake. I use it to check notifications. How will Face ID know I just want to peek at the lock screen rather than unlock my phone.

2) In the car, I often have my phone in a mount. Above the radio, middle of the dash. Not directly facing me. To open it up, I use Touch ID. How will Face ID see me?

I used face recognition on my Nexus5. Worked pretty well, pretty fast. Still required to face the phone.

1.) Apple will implement awareness detection. This means that it either will scan for the whole time the lock screen is present or that a reversed "raise to wake" will trigger it to be locked again. I would also imagine that locking it with the sleep/wake button will trigger the phone to lock. What I can assure you is, that Apple has thought about this problem and for sure has a solution to that.

2.) I really don't want to judge you but using your phone while driving is a big no-no.

Yes, but again: Apple will implement a solution that also works with off-angels. The technology implemented in phones up until now takes the 2D image provided and matches it with another picture provided when setting this feature up. I think Face ID will work completely different. When setting Face ID up the infrared lasers will map your face in 3D. This 3D map will then give the system different, let's call them anchors, anchors which the phone then will use to match each time it unlocks.
Now the software will be smart enough to gather in which angle your face is aligned with your iPhone and then choose the most important anchors and search for them on your face, with the 3D infrared lasers. This technique will then let users use it in extrem sunlight, in the dark, wearing a hat, wearing glasses (different types of glasses), lipstick, heavy make-up etc. Because it is not looking at how your face looks, but it is actually measuring it with the infrared lasers each time you unlock it.

It's been reported that Apple was unable to implement Touch ID under the screen for the next iPhone, and some have speculated that it'll be on the back of the phone.

Let's say the sensor is on the back, but it's seamlessly hidden in the Apple Logo. Perfect placement for your finger, and great way to keep the sleek design.

Thoughts?

I hate to say it, but the majority of the rumours point to Apple not only scrapping Touch ID completely, but also going nuclear on ANY Home button and instead relying on horrible looking gestures..
We shall see but it's possible they may ruin iOS yet..

As for facial scanning, sounds good but as I understand the banks have to approve Apples security measures to support Apple Pay.. let's see how many support face scanning? I'm sure it supports Apple Pay, doesn't mean your bank does.

I'm really trying not to jump to any conclusions until I see the official launch on the 12th, but the 7s+ is starting to seem like the more appealing option.

Yeah only 2 weeks now or less. I'm actually more interested to see the fancy new theatre, which I could go there to see their new site.
Also wondering if they'll push the price of the 7S up higher this year, if the iPhone 8 design is the 7 replacement for next year, and next year you get a much bigger model bezel free Plus model, then they will cost more then the 7 and 7 Plus, but they can't cost from 1000 as that'll kill Apples market share.

First, in the car I don't touch it unless at a light.

Second, it does not matter how many angles it takes, the camera has a finite field of vision.

Yes, that is true with the finite field of vision. But do not know yet, how big the field is. So to worry now and to already denounce Face ID is ridiculous.

Yeah sure, now Apple is not just ruining iPhones but also iOS. Wow. We do not know how they will replace the home button. But adding gestures makes a lot of sense. The gestures in iOS 11 for the iPad are great and intuitive. So stop complaining about something we haven't even seen yet.

Again: Do you really think Apple has not discussed this with the banks? Do you really think Apple will add a feature that could jeopardy the security of iOS / Apple Pay or the support from the banks? How stupid do you think Apple is? Imagine the press if a bank drops Apple Pay support because of the facial recognition. And let's not act like Touch ID was all that save. Touch ID was tricked within a month after release with an artificially created fingerprint. So let's all take a deep breath and wait 10 days and then all our questions will be answered. This here is just getting ridiculous.

How stupid do I think Apple is? Hahahaha VERY STUPID AND AREOGANT TO THE HILT is your answer, NO ONE else would make a watch and charge several thousand pounds for it when it has the EXACT same internals and screen as one costing a few hundred pounds, no one else does that... then again I don't know any computer company that not only charges maximum premium prices for a computer with tehcnology at least 4 years old, but increases the price by a significant amount too...

And let's see what happens at the event because not all banks support Apple Pay as it is. You don't know any better then I do.

As for gestures, an iPad is a world apart from an iPhone with a case on, you try swiping from the left to get a gesture to work now, with a bezelless screen and a case I can't see it being any better.
The Home button has been the pinnacle of iOS since launch, to ditch it entirely is stupid.

Apple also designed a phone where your hands holding it naturally blocked the cellular signals from working, or did you forget that entire press conference where Steve Jobs told all us customers it was all our fault for holding it wrong......

Yeah, Apple is brave enough to bring some stupid things to the marketplace that risks its share.

Well the Apple Watch thing was strange yes. But the Macbook thing is just plain wrong. But then again, you don't seem to like Apple so what do I know. I could argue with you until Christmas.

Apple Pay is not supported by some banks because Apple wants money for it. And Banks don't want to pay for that. It's not a security thing it's a money thing. And that brings me to my point: the Services revenue is now a big part of Apple's revenue. In there is Apple Pay. So Apple Pay is a huge factor now for Apple, so Apple will do everything to make it more secure and convenient.

As for the home button; Apple gets rid of the physical home button. So why the heck should they render a home button? I was on the team "virtual home button" before but then I began to think about it; Apple gets rid of the bezels so that there is more screen estate. So why would apple then use that extra screen estate to render a home button and to waste this space? Then I thought they might to a mini home button which would not be very high. But that would just make it look like they copied Android. And that is not what they want. So to scrap the home button all together is a brilliant idea. You have to move your thumb either way. And difference between the push of a button and a swipe up is really not that different.

I had an iPhone 4 and have never encountered this problem. It was completely blown out of proportion and people still cling to the words from 7 (!) years ago of a, unfortunately and sadly, passed man. So please go out and find a new argument. This one has been used up.

And that whole market share is stupid. In terms of OS Apple will always be the smaller one. Android is thrown into every sh*t phone out there. That guarantees a big market share but also a rubbish customer experience. And in terms of Hardware: Find one range of phones that has a bigger market share than the iPhone. I am not talking about comparing Huawei, Samsung and Apple. I am talking about comparing the iPhone 7 / 7 Plus sales with S7 sales and so on. No other range of phones has a bigger market share than the iPhone when it comes to premium devices.

Haha oh the good ol, you criticised Apple replying to your comment to me therefore I MUST HATE THEM!! Dear oh dear... yeah that's it anyone who dare criticise Apple to you is an Apple hater plain and simple.. I'm glad I'm not closed minded like that.

As for the iPhone 4, if it was such a none issue, Apple would not have held a press conference about it!

I'll totally ignore your last paragraph as your requesting I do something, then severely limiting the scope I have to do it in whilst you also display your hatred for Android handsets..

Oh and go and as for the banks not thinking about security, I guess that shows your very young if mind to hold an opinion like that? I was also referring to the current banks that already support it, so your relply isn't matching what I was saying.

Woah woah wooooah Swissguy, take a lap! Maybe my experience using other facial recognition software leads me to believe that Apple’s facial recognition software won’t work with sunglasses. I don’t wear regular glasses, therefore facial recognition software doesn’t recognize my face when I am wearing glasses. I also have a full beard. Sometimes it’s trimmed and neat, sometimes I wook it out. So am I going to have to reteach my phone my face every few weeks because my appearance changes? For some people, their face isn’t a static thing like a fingerprint or iris. It annoys the heck outta me that you’d assume that Apple has this completely figured out without any evidence at all. Kind of a strange opinion to have actually.

Apple is using 3D facial recognition which is more secure then the 2d used by every other device that's ever had it. So it should be more secure, whether it can work with glasses is a different story.

Actually, I don't think that was stupid. It was smart of Apple to do that because there were plenty of stupid people who were willing to spend that money--some of them even post at these boards. Who can blame Apple for taking advantage of them? As we all know, a fool and his money are soon parted...
