Don't get me wrong, the lighter weight and form factor was nice. The speed seemed decent, but it just seems to be overpriced for what you get.

I was debating getting one, and the fact that you only get 10gb for $500 after iOS is just not enough space for anything. You can literally put on a few apps and games and a movie. Going up to $600 your looking at $650 out the door with tax, plus $99 for Apple care because you don't want to spend $600 and then accidentally drop the tablet and have it break. So now your at $750 and then you will want a cover for it, which will bring it up to about $800.

For $800 I would expect to be able to get a device with 128gb of memory, 2gb ram, a cover, and warranty.

These things are not selling like hot cakes, theres tons of them at every store i have been to. I'll wait for the next iPad and if Apple starts at 32gb with 2gb ram, then I'll buy one. Otherwise, I am happy using my $229 kindle hdx that is just as high quality and a fraction of the price.

I agree. I was in the mall and popped into the Apple store, which was empty, btw. The iPad Air certainly felt lighter and thinner, and looked a lot like an iPad Mini. I know the point was to make it as thin and light as possible, and maybe I'm just used to the previous generation iPads, but my first impression was that it felt like a far cheaper device. That Apple quality feel, like closing the door of a BMW, wasn't there like it is with my 5S and my iPad 4. It felt like a plastic mock-up of an iPad, not the actual device.

Definitely holding out for the retina mini. For what I'd spend on this, I can have a more portable device with LTE or more capacity.

Not impressed either.

+1

that is exactly what i was getting at with my purpose of starting this thread. I went to the store and played with an ipad. The device is nice but the baseline model and cost of memory increase is absurd for the luxury item it is.

Well here's another perspective... I'm someone who owns a Macbook Pro and iPhone and has used portable Apple products for years, but never owned an iPad. I went to the Apple Store today pretty intent on getting an Air, and I have to say, just using it, I wasn't very impressed. The form factor and screen and everything looks great, but while interacting with the GUI -- scrolling around in Safari, flipping between apps in the App Switcher -- there was the slightest amount of laggy stutter. It felt as if it didn't quite have a beefy enough GPU for the graphics of iOS 7, and having that impression of the flagship iPad on Day 1 doesn't bode well for how usable it'll be in 2 years. My year-old iPhone 5 feels just as snappy, if not snappier, to use. I even tried two different floor models, and closed all apps, with the same result. I don't know if the demo iOS they're running is somehow slower, but it was enough to turn away a guy who was ready to spend $700.

Was I the only one who was laughing at him bragging about getting free books and movies? Or is this one of those forums where I have to pretend I don't download every bit of media I have for free? uh...yea... I totally spend all my hard earned money buying songs from an iTunes store... LOL.

My imaginary collection of 10,000 MP3s is totally illegal and I would never break the law and put them, along with my 20GB folder of Comic book CBRs and EPUB files, 50GB folder full of Bluray rips on my 128GB iPad for absolutely $0. I will totally write a check to each movie & music producer first and then cry because I didn't think to buy a "Kindle HDXTRA Super + Totally Better Edition".

Yes, this is a forum where many of the users have the kind of respect for copyright laws that you seem to lack. I stream most of the AV content that I use, so I don't have to steal music. But Netflix has disappointed me lately, so I'm thinking about returning to my old habits. You know what I mean.

iPad 2 was out if stock for 2-3 months
Lucky i got it 0 day

You get around 14GB out of the box. Demo units have third party apps installed, iOS is only around 700MB.

iPads have never sold like hot cakes. They cost as much as a normal computer, they are luxury devices for most everyone. I walked in an Apple store to buy the first retina iPad (3) on launch day, they had plenty of stock. iPad 2 was a small line. Only the original iPad was "difficult" to acquire right after launch, but that is just because they didn't know what kind of demand to expect.

Go buy an asus t100 if you want value for money. 2GB RAM, 64GB memory with an sdhc slot, and included keyboard dock. I bought one but it is going back because it sucks as a tablet and it sucks at being a laptop. Like it or not, Apple is still the king of tablets and they are charging accordingly.

Nice tablet, but not too impressed this time around....;)

I went to the Mall, and played with the Air on display. They had four of them, and since the store only had two customers (Me included), I had plenty of time to play with, and gauge the new Apple Air. Though I wanted this new Tablet at first, I left without buying this time around….

I had a nagging feeling that the next Air will have the Touch ID, and even though not a make or break deal, I like it on my iPhone 5S so much, I wanted it on the Air.

Darn speakers did not put out enough sound even with the sound on max. I know I could use earplugs or a headphone, but still I came away from listening on the four demo’s a little bit underwhelm, and I wished Apple would direct the speakers to the front, facing the user as some other tablets have. This will not happen even next year, since this new Air just got an upgrade on the size, and style.

Though most do not use the Camera on the iPad, I did wish that Apple would have given the Air the update as the iphone 5S got with 8 MP, and dual flash. So next year they may or may not offer it.

May not happen next year either, but one could hope that Apple offers 2 GB of ram instead of 1 GB. Some may not think this is necessary, but Apple really needs to think of this area for an upgrade next time.

How about the 802.11n instead of the ac ? I want that as well. Just do

The display was good, so no complaints, and the size/lightness was also a plus. Since I have the iPad 3, it just didn’t seem it was a good reason to splurge another $ 500.00 + on the Air, not including AppleCare +/tax + accessories. If you like it, good, but its not for everyone. Yes, I can wait it out 12 more months. Its only a gadget. :D

For others, Glad you want one and like it. I'll wait 1 year.

Thanks! I love being able to download movies, books and tv shows for free rather than paying $10-$20 per movie and $5 per book. In the end I imagine I will save a lot of money.

Also theres no need for cellular because I can just download the shows or movies I want to watch ahead of time. I also enjoy being able to play all the same games on my kindle as what is on the Apple apps because game loft and all the other game makers make games for kindle too, and they run just as well. Hmm, I guess I miss out on typing papers or making power points but I have a 15" rmbp for that so oh well.

Having quick access to buy things and have free 2 day shipping is also great. I appreciate your comment!

I have an iPad and I get free movies. ;)
Hopefully you got the Kindle without ads plastered all over it.

2007? That was the iPhone launch. The iPad debuted in 2009.

But agree in general, this OP is a pointless waste of MR bandwidth.

When iPads first came out, it was worth it to pay $500 for 16gb of memory and the form factor as nothing else was out that could compare.

Now its the same old song and dance by Apple selling 16gb for same price and $100 per increase in memory when competitors are starting at way cheaper for 16gb base models and only charging $40 per increase in memory. Apple is behind the times on pricing. It used to be that they priced competitively and you got a good deal for the money but now it just seems meh.

U can nit pick my post all you want....your post was still pointless.

Apple is way overdue to either increase the storage space, or cut the price. $100 for 16GB is ridiculous. It wasn't so bad back in 2009, but I can get a 16gb flash drive for $10, so I estimate Apple probably pays no more than $2, with the bulk quantities they buy.

For now, all I can do is vote with my wallet. I get 16GB models, and use iCloud and apps like Air Video and manage.

I find it amusing that the OP thinks that Apple products are, or have ever been, about "value."

A Kia does the same thing that a Mercedes does....takes you from one place to another. Enjoy your Kia.

Not to be a jerk/turd, but the real way to vote with your money is to not keep buying newer models, 16gb or not.

I'd love to ride my iPad3 and iPhone 5 both jailbroken out indefinitely, though the new iPads are tempting. Tried an iPad4, wasn't that impressed and it went back (even when it could be jailbroken).

Also dabbling with Nexus 5 waters on top of keeping the iPhone, so... Apple is definitely feeling a lack of funds coming their way for the past year.

Not that it makes any difference or dings their business, my wallet voting pattern. But that's just my 2 cents.

I wonder if retina is too much to power for a non-X SoC, but I suspect its just iOS 7 bugginess with pads in general. Though, they definitely could have beefed up their flagship iPad a bit more I think specs wise. Especially to better distinguish it from iPad mini with retina for $100 less thats smaller and 75% of the weight of iPad air.

Well, then, that makes it official. Your impression, of course, matters to all of us, and if you're not impressed, that impresses us.

You're making a tongue in cheek joke, right?

Because if you expect me to trade my 350z for a Kia, i'll have to tell you where you can stick it!

So you're saying I should still be using my iPad 1?

Most geeks are addicted to new toys. I tried the new iPad, and besides the weight and the new processor, there really isn't anything to be excited about. I will keep my iPad 2. It feels sturdier. So they reduced the bezel around the screen. Should that be enough to wow people? Does it make your life more meaningful. Let's face it, we've become consumer-addicted junkies. We try to find fulfillment in the slightest modifications in an iPad.

And, making it lighter does not make it a better product.

Seriously, I am not sure what all the hoopla about lighter iPads are.

I have plenty of money, because I don't frivolously waste it. :)

Me too. Been to couple stores. They didn't have 128 gb that I wanted. I already ordered online and it's coming Tues or Mon. There are plenty of apps that are free and can watch free shows like CW network. I'm a cord cutter too. I don't live near an apple store. If I were, I would got one today.

Good for you. I choose to buy. :D I am upgrading to get more storage and wanted lighter faster latest version!

In case you don't know, I've been on this forum longer than some of you have been celebrating puberty.

I had an iPad 2. It worked. I sold it earlier this year.

I wandered into the Apple Store and played with the iPad Air today. I liked it. Arrived home, ordered a 128GB model with cellular service. Arrives on the 6th.

Looking forward to Logitech's keyboard match for it.

There's middle ground between upgrading every model and staying with the first gen through thick and thin.

I agree 16gb is ridiculous in 2013. I am seriously considering buying one but refuse to pay $600 for 32 GB version. I will wait until the refurbs hit.
