I've owned ipad 1-3 and really don't see any point in owning one at this point. It was nice for browsing and youtube, but iOS is completely crippled for productivity so I always ended up bring my laptop with me when traveling, thus defeating the whole purpose of getting an ipad. I don't see myself purchasing another model until Apple enables file management and includes a USB port, which will obviously never happen. I'm picking up a Surface 2 this weekend instead; with full MS Office, desktop class browser and a FILE MANAGER I can finally ditch the laptop.

I wish the Surface Prom 2 had built in LTE. I hear the RT is getting it later on, but not the Pro

What makes you think the only file type you can email is a picture? I can email all sorts of file types - everything that's in Goodreader for example (which connects to many cloud services). From the Dropbox app you can get the same effect because Dropbox will create a private link rather than actually attaching the file to achieve the same end goal. There is very little you can't do in iOS today because of the lack of a traditional file system, and leaving it out is one of the primary reasons iOS works like it does. I've been using computers for over 30 years and have been an IT director for nearly 15 years and I find no issue with the lack of a file system. I use tablets with file systems everyday. They have their own significant issues.

I shouldn't have to use a third party app to perform something that basic. Yes, you can get around the no file system issue, but it's a HUGE PITA and doesn't "just work". Even if you use an app it is literally impossible to attach multiple files to one email so I ended up sending 3,4 or 5 emails. At the end of the day iPad is extremely limited when it comes to anything more than basic email, YouTube and some light Web browsing.

The other day I was going to buy a vw golf but it was the same as the 1967 golf. Sure the tech, engine, body, comfort, and gas mileage was better. It's just that is still has four wheels, a roof, and a steering wheel. So I'm just going to stay with my just as we'll made Yugo.

Lmbo love the dub reference but 67 :D

"It's super fast, lighter weight, looks gorgeous. I already love it much more than the iPad 3, because the reduction in weight and bevels makes it a more usable device."

I will check the Air out. So many on the forum bash the iPad 3 (my current version), so I need to see how far behind I am.

I have been and still am taken with my 3. Being retired my travels are less so the weight isn't an issue.

The principal device upgrade driver for me is when software upgrades are blocked by the hardware I am using. I have a hunch that that won't reach critical mass until say ... next October?

Of course, It doesn't take much to please me nowadays since my first computer was an Apple IIc. :p

As someone who was waiting for a significant drop in weight in order to upgrade, carrying around my iPad 3 in my backpack/bag wasn't the issue. It was holding it in my hands on the couch or on my bed where weight was an issue. If you use the iPad most when it's propped up on a desk, then you probably won't notice the lighter weight of the Air.

As always with Apple products, if you can wait to upgrade then wait.

Another note as a former iPad 3 and iPhone 5 owner, I just had to get rid of my 30-pin devices. Needing 2 different cables was annoying to me lol.

Nope, your experience is still outdated. You can now email multiple files in one email. Just because the workflow has changed from what you are used to doesn't make it bad. The old way has plenty of quirks too; we just tend to overlook them because they are so ingrained in us. The old method is a never-ending pile of file versions where it's never clear who has the most up to date version ( or if there is even just one that contains all changes). The new workflow is to keep one file centrally located that multiple people collaborate on, and in this way desktop operating systems aren't much if any ahead of iOS.

I can email multiple files of different types in a single email. As other people have posted, Goodreader is essentially a complete file system in an app. I can store & file PDFs, Word files that I need to reference, etc., unzip files, email multiple files, save back up to Dropbox, Google Drive, rename, duplicate, delete, open in another app... basically anything a file browser can do can be done with Goodreader.

Keynote files stay in Keynote - which are then auto synced to iCloud and immediately available on my MacBook Air, iMac, iPhone, etc. And if I need to send a copy to someone, I can export it as a PDF, PowerPoint, etc.

Pages works the same way. And because these apps auto sync to iCloud, I never have to manually sync things.

I've never been stuck with multiple versions of a file nor have I never been unable to get a file off my iPad.

I own two Nexus 7's (the original and the 2013 FHD version) and a Samsung Note 8. Yes, I'm a gadget geek. And I've yet to find a productivity task that I can't do on my iPad just as easily as on an Android tablet or a Surface RT (Surface Pro doesn't count - it's a full-on Win 8 laptop barely lighter than a MacBook Air).

I was so hungry and bought a $15 hot dog and it wasn't worth it. Going up from the $2 hot dog because you know, you need 3 of them to fill up your stomach if your hungry so that is automatically $6 for three hot dogs. But then, who wants just a hot dog with just mustard, you need eat it with chilli and cheese to have any taste so that is another $2 a piece on each hot dog totalling $12. But then, who doesn't get thirsty after eating 3 hot dogs so you have to tack on $3 for an extra large soda.

For $15 I don't expect a simple hot dog, I expect a gourmet meal.

Epic Win. :)

Expressing an opinion is not the same as harassing and belittling others. You should lookup the definitions for harassment and belittlement in the dictionary. I am just not impressed by iPad's light weight to make me jump out of my seat to buy one. But hey, if it works for you, then by all means buy one or two.

You're expressing opinions about other *people* -- you said that people that buy an iPad Air are "throwing their money away". That is belittling them by inferring that they don't have enough common sense to make a better choice. Whereas the OP made a subjective opinion about the device itself. But hey, continue to roll your eyes all you want, I'm done with this thread.

Relax. Chill out buddy. Go read Guy Dubord's Society of the Spectacle. Maybe you will understand what I am talking about.

Such an interesting thread. Posts that are bashing on the Air for not bringing enough to the table makes me wonder what they really are waiting for. I'm just not sure you ever will be satisfied. Has there ever been a "complete" iPad launch? The answer is no, and there never will be. You are living in a land of delusion if you think otherwise. Ever year, something will come out, and that something will leave you wanting more. A new iPad will be released, and each version that is released will always be imperfect and allow Apple to build and expand upon. You're never going to be completely satisfied. Enjoy the Air for what it is. I have definitely appreciated my upgrade and will be looking forward to the day that I can flip this tablet to allow me to buy the next generation of iPads to come.

Playing around with demo unit at BestBuy or where ever won't do justice. The wifi is slow due to limited bandwidth. I was skeptical when I was at BB playing around with the iPad Air. It's super slow, not very responsive. I decided to go for it and I try it from home. If it sucks just like how I see it at BB, I will just return it. Boy, it is night and day at home. All I can say is, I am very glad that I picked up iPad Air. Yes, there are more tablets available from different price range and HW spec. I have tried many, including the latest top of the line Samsung, but none was executed as well as iOS.

That's not true. There is no reason other than to squeeze another product and another $500 from customers to not include touch ID and 2 GB ram in iPad 5. The technology is there. But they love holding out making small incremental improvements to various devices each year. It lengthens the earnings stream. As a shareholder since AAPL was $90, I love it. As a consumer, it sucks.

Intent

That statement couldn't be any more false. Your needs do not represent the needs of every other person on the planet.

My intent wasn't to say tablets are useless, I am just saying most would be covered between a smartphone and laptop.

Went to BB yesterday all set to buy a new ipad air. After checking it out for about 15 minutes I made the decision to wait for the mini retima, or if the price drops enough on the mini pick up one of those. Even with the reduced size the ipad air was just too big to be comfortable for me. I held off on the mini last year waiting for a smaller full sized ipad, but still a little too big FOR ME

Which was exactly my point so I'm sorry for failing to see which of my statements you are actually refuting. It's a widely known fact that these products are in development years before they are launched. The Air itself is probably 2-3 years in the making. Of course the technology is out there to make a better device, which is exactly what I meant when I said every iPad will be, in a sense, incomplete, and leave you looking forward to what the next device brings as soon as one is shipped.

Nice post. Which IPad did you upgrade from?

I have a Mini but I could not enjoy everything on it that to me warranted a larger screen like watching movies so I used an android tablet for that and some other things. For me, the Air is a huge upgrade. For others that may have a 4th gen, spending to upgrade deserves their personal attention to justify if it would be worthwhile or not.

Your troll is exposed by your last comment. Have fun with your el cheap plastic Kindle with maybe 1/10th the functionality of an Air.

Don't get me wrong, the lighter weight and form factor was nice. The speed seemed decent, but it just seems to be overpriced for what you get.

I was debating getting one, and the fact that you only get 10gb for $500 after iOS is just not enough space for anything. You can literally put on a few apps and games and a movie. Going up to $600 your looking at $650 out the door with tax, plus $99 for Apple care because you don't want to spend $600 and then accidentally drop the tablet and have it break. So now your at $750 and then you will want a cover for it, which will bring it up to about $800.

For $800 I would expect to be able to get a device with 128gb of memory, 2gb ram, a cover, and warranty.

These things are not selling like hot cakes, theres tons of them at every store i have been to. I'll wait for the next iPad and if Apple starts at 32gb with 2gb ram, then I'll buy one. Otherwise, I am happy using my $229 kindle hdx that is just as high quality and a fraction of the price.

I just returned from Best Buy where I tested iOS 7 on an iPad mini, iPad 2, and the iPad Air. I currently have an iPad 4. To those who have an iPad 1,2,3 then it's a decent upgrade for the weight alone. However if you have an iPad 4 is almost completely pointless, let me explain why....

The iPad air has the exact same slight stuttering issues when choosing apps from multitasking, 4 finger pinch to home screen, as well as other various stutters throughout the OS (slight annoyances). This means only ONE thing, Apple has NOT properly optimized iOS 7 for iPads. ALL the iPads I tested including my own have the same slight stuttering and delays when switching to the number pad on the keyboard as well as the issues listed above.

Overall things were very speedy but honestly not any more noticeable than on my iPad 4. The biggest problem with any kind of weird glitches on any ipad are strictly due to iOS 7. And honestly it looks like a lot of it is due to the blurring they are using. The iPad 2 actually felt very smooth since they use simple transparency rather than the blurring.

So if you have an iPad 1or 3 then it's waaaay worth it. Otherwise just wait till the operating system hopefully gets optimized properly.

All the reviewers are gushing because they all got iPad 3s as their personal devices because of the screen. They all skipped the iPad 4. So naturally because the iPad 3 was a mistake practically admitted by apple releasing an update 6 months later, reviewers see a HUUUUUGE increase in performance.

I disagree as an owner of both an ipad 4 and an Air. The Air is subtly, but noticeably faster in a number of key ways, including multitasking where there is now virtually no wait after switching apps before the app responds. This was the only real speed related complaint I had with the 4 and it is definitely better with the Air.

Far more important though is how the reduced weight and size make the device feel far more approachable. I literally notice this every single time I pick up the Air. This is why I upgraded. The front camera is also much more sensitive in low light, meaning video chatting in a normally lit house at night now doesn't look terrible, and as I use Mobius facial recognition to unlock my password safe, I don't have to go turning on lights to get it to work, it just works instantly.

Well worth the upgrade for me.

You guys aren't considering the cost of manufacturing the air. The parts cost clearly hasn't gone down enough and the technology to get to ten hours of battery life to support touch id and 2gigs of ram in the same air case simply isn't there yet.

That may or may not be true. You know the answer just as well as I do. Rumor mills have suggested that touch ID wasn't included for supply shortages, not a lack of battery power or technology..

I dont pay for an ipad, I pay for the luxury. In my eyes I can't go to an Android store or a samsung store and have them troubleshoot a tablet for me. And trusting my carrier's customer service reps with that responsibility is even worse. I like the idea of if somethings wrong with my ipad, I an go into an Apple store and it'll be fixed.

I'm big on "you get what you pay for", so if I have to pay a premium for reliability, here's my card.

The point is you dont know. Im sure Apple wants to release the best product they can to fend off the competition. Take the tin foil hats off.
