Amazing. Just wish more games would support Metal. Sigh. I guess gaming on macOS isn't that popular enough for game developers to justify. I was using Boot Camp to game before my M1 Max and I'm missing it. Tried Parallels but it is still not as responsive as Boot Camp. Bought a Dell XPS 8940 just for gaming.

Haha. ? That's the first thing I noticed actually. I was gonna PM OP about it but never mind.
haha, I just looked at what my signature was (it doesnt display it for me unless I go look in my profile..). I havent updated that in quite a while it looks like. I have probably owned about 40 apple products since then. but I am going to leave it as it is for now :)

"...when using a metal-optimized game"

That's sort of a big caveat unfortunately

For now, but given Apple is finally giving us non-trash tier hardware in their most popular product lines, its something that may change moving forward.

Every iOS developer is or should be targeting metal and as/when they expand into larger apps/games they'll find an easy path to the M1 and later Macs.

This is great news for the future, more than great news for today.

there is a separate low power mode check box on both the battery tab and the power adapter tab though
I guess its just so the fans dont spin up when you need complete silence (now that I actually read what it says under the checkbox ..yes its for quieter use and does reduce energy usage even when plugged in)

Interesting … do you have a sense of wether the performance loss on each low power mode (battery/AC) is the same? Are the low power modes equivalent?

I've played with low power mode.

I didn't notice any significant performance difference to speak of (I wasn't benchmarking, but in subjective performance feel as a human didn't notice), however it did make the fan turn off.

Did it feel different from low power mode on battery?

I used to see signatures but now I don’t anymore for anyone

Not very scientific I know. But not too far off method in terms of predicting where it should fall in terms of performance against AMD/Nvidia counterparts with clockspeed considered.
But that's exactly the thing... it's not like Apple is throwing more transistors at the problem to achieve better performance at lower clock. Apple G13 is a fairly simple GPU compared to modern Nvidia hardware. Nvidia has more complex instruction scheduling, limited form of super-scalar execution (two instructions can be executed simultaneously), RT hardware, integrated matrix hardware etc...

G13 performance is exactly as you'd expect — clock rate multiplied by the ALU width by number ALUs by 2x (FMA). There is no magic here. Where they get good rasterization performance from is TBDR (better use of hardware resources in common cases) as well as their absolutely humongous caches.

Those are impressive numbers on metal...from others also very impressive numbers on WoW game that is native also from my understanding

Oh ok. Metal-optimized delivers better result than whatever API they were using under RTX3070. Seems legit.
None of the games I play the most offer macOS version, let alone Metal optimised. Sad that I cannot really experience the power of M1 GPU, especially after Apple decides to remove iOS app support on macOS.

Almost every game published on macOS in the last couple of years uses Metal…

Dod they really? I still see iPhone apps on my Mac App store:

I'd be more interested to see how it performs compared to the same game running on a 3070 under Windows/DirectX. I'd be willing to bet that the 3070/DirectX still performs far better than the M1 Pro GPU/Metal for the same game.

Umm, ok. But there is no Supreme Commander Forged Alliance. StarCraft I/II, Age of Empires II DE, Age of Empires 4, CNC and RA remastered, Portal 1/2/Mods, Cyberdimension, Hyperdimension, Azur Lane Crosswave etc etc... Among all of them, only StarCraft I/II and Portal 1/2 published on macOS without Apple Silicon support, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What are you smoking? They're available in the Mac App Store. If you have a specific purchased iOS app you're looking to install, go into your account and then up the top... otherwise they're just mixed in with the rest of the apps in the store. Looks like every one of my iOS apps are there.

No new games I play actively have macOS support, nor do many productivity apps that has macOS version (tho this one makes sense as otherwise it's redundant). Ever since the announcement, devs flocked to remove their iOS apps from macOS app store, leaving nothing much left.
What announcement?

Well, I was talking about games available on macOS, and sure sure, the selection could be better. SC 2 uses Metal btw. Apple Silicon port is unlikely since the game is ten years old at this point and on life support.

SC2's metal implementation sucks. When the game first came out, I had a mid-range card from 2010 and ran it at pretty much maxed-out settings. It ran fine. With my M1 Pro, I could only manage 1080p at medium to low settings.

Yeah, it doesn't work well on Rosetta 2 for some reason. Unfrortunately, it being an old game and all, it's unlikely that Blizard will be interested in fixing it.

Why are these settings greyed out for me, I wonder?

Gotta keep in mine that a PC game and Mac game don't always use the same assets. Textures and models might be slightly different and tweaked for each platform. It won't be visible to the eye.

The iOS app that are still available in my App Store are all super old never updated ones. New apps never shows up, meaning this feature is useless for me.
