Apple allows dev to opt out of macOS App Store for their iOS apps.

Was that a separate announcement? it was like this from the very start, no? And of course the developers should have the decision whether their app is available on the Mc app store or not, no?

Yeah, it doesn't work well on Rosetta 2 for some reason. Unfrortunately, it being an old game and all, it's unlikely that Blizard will be interested in fixing it.
In the last few years blizzard has kind of abandoned their old player base to chase the latest profit maximization strategies. Diablo 3 is on the switch but not iOS and I suspect it is more of a desire to put out the micro transaction filled Diablo Immortal rather than any technical limitation.

That announcement took effect after big sur 11.3.1. To me since I can’t play mobile games I play often on iOS on macOS, Apple’s move basically kills the feature for good. There are even projects attempting to recreate Big Sur 11.2.3 support so people could play more games on M1 Mac, which means something,

This ...

They have gone from a "must buy" at launch to "don't care".

I mean, everybody knows this right? The architecture is substantially different from traditional cpu+gpu designs. It has a lot of potential if you use the frameworks Apple made for it.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the M1 Pro can match a 3070, given the program in question uses the M Series strengths.

Also compared Dirt Rally on the m1 pro 16 to the zephyrus g15 3070 laptop gpu. At this point its wiping the floor with the 3070 ...rtx doing everything it can running at the full 80-90w..still 20fps slower than the m1 pro
(updated first post with a quick video)

mi7chy feel free to test this on your 3060..I had my laptop on turbo mode (overclocked) for this test.

You're mistaken...neither of these games have been optimized for M1..they are both running through rosetta, but do use metal for rendering. The performance difference would be even more dramatic if it were fully optimized for apple silicon.

I meant the part about Metal optimization. Still impressive nonetheless.

Or if you're super sensitive to fan noise-- maybe for audio work...

(BTW, I found myself super triggered by your user name... ? Well done.)

It's a popular joke in engineering, we like to kid around about the sometimes liberal assumptions we make, like sin(x)=x.

As far as fan noise goes, my 16 M1 Max doesn't make any unless it's under a prolonged heavy load, which I'd want to be on the 140w adapter for anyways.

"...when using a metal-optimized game"

That's sort of a big caveat unfortunately
Not Really - faster is faster. No one would buy a MBP to run windows software that is not optimized to run on the MAC. that would be silly. Are you imagining some reality where people would buy games to run on a MAC that don't run well because they have never been compelled for that purpose and are maybe using some deprecated frameworks?

That being said, no serious gamers buy Macs, maybe that changes now and developers optimize. I wouldn't waste my time on games in general, so I do not care

This is very interesting. Still, (like has been mentioned) we're not comparing apples to apples (pun intended) are we?

I just know that my tests when using a Mac Pro (Mid 2010) to play a game avaliable for both Windows and macOS the game has always been considerably faster in Windows. I remember I did try Dirt Rally and compared, but it was a few years ago. Maybe try again now when I have Big Sur and Windows 10 and a RX 5700 XT. :)

Anyway, like I've said in another thread – if Apple can offer better performance than the rest at a lower power consumption I think that's great. Seems there's good incetive to bring more demanding games to the Mac since the switch to Apple silicon. ?

I wouldn't waste my time on games in general, so I do not care
What do you do with your time that when you don't waste it, if I may ask? :)

So only games that you like matter. Got it.
You do realize that my reply was to someone basically saying that those games are all that matter...and you have absolutely no weight in the argument with that avatar..
So only those old boring games matter? ok got it..
too bad solitaire and minesweeper arent on mac either

Does the M1 MAX get loud when you play games? I have the M1 pro and while the fan start it stay quiet. I would like to know as I'm thinking about exchanging for the MAX chip but I love the fact that the pro is so quiet and cool all the time. I'm afraid to lose that.

A fair assumption, but I am just too lazy to change it. Playing new world and apex. Neither of which are available....ah forget it, you will say those don't matter either.

I think if games matter to you then you get a gaming laptop or desktop pc.
I posted this thread to show a fair comparison between a 3070 laptop and the m1 pro laptop. These threads always get sidetracked by people who want to point out that there arent a lot of games on mac..yes we know that. Nobody is forcing you to switch to a mac for your gaming needs.

Actually it was all modern games use metal. I, and others, are pointing out this isn't so. Glad we got there.

Nice and all, but unfortunately still too few games for now. My current game right now is FF XIV and the mac version is pretty bad. Even on max settings on my M1Max 16, it looks like the lower eye candy settings on the PC version. It also cannot keep up at all with my brother's Lenovo 5 Pro 3070 let alone my new Legion 7's 3080 graphics card. It does run much quieter and cooler and can keep gaming while on battery. I've decided to lug around a gaming PC with the M1 Max as I'm putting up my i9 MBP 16 for sale as the M1 Max just kills the i9 for my work.

Full 16-hour days of non-stop hardcore self-improvement, arduously exacting work, and climbing that ladder through socializing/hobnobbing, what else? Working-class people don't have time for rest and entertainment, only the wealthy who've already earned it do.

(death is the only certainty in this life, so accrue all the talents and personal achievements you like, you're moving the clock like anyone else)

There are those of us slackers that get by on about 9 hours of day job, 2 hours of side job (writing/art in my case), and find time for an hour of sweet, sweet, gaming here and there. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

I blow glass for about 4-5 hours and then waste the rest of my day doing random stuff.
I also invested in $TSLA which allows me to be a real lazy f*ck when I want to
gives me time to post on here and make silly youtube testing videos ?
I also have a kid so he keeps me pretty busy

And yet you are wasting time arguing with strangers on a crazy tech forum... Sorry, but that's just funny
