@atebits posted this about 30 minutes ago:

Tweetie 2.1 approved!! Lists, geotagging, native retweets and more. Should show up on the App Store in a matter of hours.

...But it didn't take that long. Tweetie 2.1 is live now. Going to start testing now...

EDIT::

ABORT MISSION! I do not like the new RT function. It doesn't give you the option to add your own txt. Boo! I knew that the official Twitter RT didn't do that but I didn't know that Tweetie would take it away, just give the option to RT the old school way. The List feature is nice though. More soon...

Tweetie 2.1 uses the official API with the official RT feature. Using that you can't add your own text, even if Atebits tried to.

However, you can still use the (via @) format by choosing "quote tweet".

Quoting and retweeting are now different features basically. If you want to add your own text, you use quoting. If you want to "retweet", you use the automated feature that doesn't allow changing the text.

This is the only thing still stopping me from jumping from Twitterrific to Tweetie 2. I can't stand the bright white theme. I don't understand why they removed the theme feature from Tweetie...

But why does it bother you so much when Tweetie's UI is so similar to the rest of the iPhone's UI?

Yeah, I figured that one out later. Lol. But i'm still iffy on this version so I backed up the old file in case I decide to go back.

I'm not a friend of the new RT syntax either, means we need to get used to the Quote Tweet option.

They posted that themes will be added in 2.2. Go take a look at @atebits_support.

I suppose it's just a matter of taste. I got so used to the dark theme on both Twitterrific, and TweetDeck, using it with the bright white background annoys me too much to use. If they would just give us theme options, like in the original Tweetie, I would most likely switch.

Very good news indeed. Unless Twitterrific makes some big leaps with their next update, Tweetie 2.2 will be my default.

The Lists feature is very nicely done. Tweetie 2 remains king of the Twitter apps hill.

Does it support Push notifications yet? If not, than it's not king of any App in my opinion. Simply Tweet does all this and includes Push Notifications on Mentions and Direct Messages.

Why do so many people like Tweetie over other apps? Has anyone tried both SimplyTweet and Tweetie?

I have tried just about every Twitter app for my reviews. Tweetie 2 is far and away the best. For Push, I use Boxcar which also gives me Push for Facebook. But I guess Facebook isn't very good in your estimation either since it also lacks Push.

If I need to know something from Tweetie or Facebook right away, I have SMS notifications turned on. But I have unlimited texting too - and I understand some people can't spare the messages for that.

I'm looking forward to trying out the other new features of Tweetie 2.1. I'm still new to a lot of this.

SimplyTweet is terrible. Why do people keep suggesting it? Have you USED Tweetie? Tweetie is lightyears ahead of SimplyTweet.

Love it!

Just waiting for Push Notifications and Im happy!

Don't hold your breath.

I find it pretty annoying when people post such strong opinions against something (anything) without explaining. I use SimplyTweet and find it much better (and prettier) than Tweetie. I am a casual user so maybe there's something I'm missing in Tweetie that I don't use that makes it so amazing.

And to answer your question beforehand, I own both Tweetie and Tweetie 2. I replaced the latter with ST.

Just taking a look at SimplyTweet in the app store. Seeing screenshots and feeling like it's a lame rip off of Tweetie. Or maybe it looks more like something Tweetie might have hurled up after a long night of binge drinking.

Seriously... that is one fugly app.

So basically you're here to bash an app because you don't like how it looks.

Okay, I'll test the newest version of SimplyTweet and "live blog" my experience here.

Let's start with the name. SimplyTweet? Terrible. Sounds like an artificial sweetener or some sort of Martha Stewart segment. Right off the bat when I hear "try SimplyTweet" I'm thinking to myself "oh, great, lets humor this oaf and try it out."

It's $5!? I've already tried the free version, but for this I'll pirate it and check it out.

Installed. Wow, check out that boring icon. I can tell already that this is going to be one hell of a boring UI, with little to no thought put into it.

Push notifications? I already have boxcar, but whatever. Haha, after I typed my info in to log in, the progress was indicated by dimming the keyboard? Why?

Okay, first thing I notice is the blue dot. Is this some sort of unread indication? What's the point of this? I scroll to the top and the dots don't disappear. The only way to get them to disappear is to scroll them off the screen and scroll back. I would be doing that ALL DAY LONG as I use this client. That's already a deal breaker.

Second thing I notice is this refresh button at the top. Makes no sense, I'm already at the top. Just reload when I get to the top or try to scroll up. Same with the "older" button at the bottom. I'm at the bottom because I'm looking at old tweets, don't give me a button to push, just load older ones automatically.

Third thing I notice is the absolutely hideous chat bubbles. Who made these? I want to ban them from ever designing anything ever again.

Looking at single tweet view makes me want to scoop my eyeballs out. What made the designer put that gross gradient at the top? Oh, good, an "rt" button, it doesn't even support the new retweets.

Gunna make a tweet now. Oh, god, why? The toolbar attached to the keyboard is blue and the keyboard is gray. They should match. This is ugly.

Back to timeline. Swipe a tweet. Oh that's cool, they copied Tweetie, only ... the buttons are ugly and the gray thing is like 99% opaque. Great.

Hahaha, it doesnt have threaded direct messages? This is a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I can't take any more of this. It's just terrible.

A twitter client is a user interface for using twitter. The ONLY thing that matters about it is what it looks like and how you interact with it.

If the UI of a twitter client sucks, then the twitter client sucks. There are no performance based ratings here.

Yes, a geo metro will get you from point A to point B, but wouldn't you rather drive a Lotus?

So full of win. I can't stop laughing. lol nicely done

They forgot the cardinal rule: If you're going to copy something do it as good or better than what you're copying.

Otherwise, you're basically Microsoft copying Apple. I have no problems with copying other's ideas. Especially on a new platform like the iphone. We're in uncharted territory and we're trying to find new ways of doing stuff. But if you're going to copy something make it as good as what you're copying. Nothing screams "lame" more than a half-assed copy job.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Very well written. :D

I'll just touch on the points that matter to me. First, the name. Really? You're going to use that against the app? I could sit here all night and ramble off useful apps that have ridiculous names. Doesn't change the fact that it has nothing to do with how the app performs.

Price? I beta tested so I get it for free but I will agree that it's a little steep.

Now the icon. I actually chuckled at that one. You've obviously seen Tweetie 2's icon since you're here. I don't know WTF they were thinking with that but it reminds me of a poorly done copy of Echofon but again, it has nothing to do with the functionality.

Why do the blue dots bother you? They show me which Tweets I haven't read. When I have several news feeds concerning a certain topic coming in some of the tweets may start to look/sound similar. I like this feature. They go away when I close the app (if I've scrolled high enough to see them).

The chat bubbles are disgusting. Good thing it has themes.

Everything else *to me* seems like nitpicking, really. But obviously everybody is entitled to their opinion
