This is the only thing still stopping me from jumping from Twitterrific to Tweetie 2. I can't stand the bright white theme. I don't understand why they removed the theme feature from Tweetie...

You're not rational. That's the silliest thing I've heard.

Tweetie 2 stands alone in the App Store.

Loved the SimplySh*t live blog! For those that care about UI it isn't an option.

For some reason, I'm not seeing the new "gap detection" feature in Tweetie. There's supposed to be a "tear" in the tweet stream when you log in after a period of inactivity, but I'm not getting it. Is there a setting you have to enable?

Perfectly rational. The bright white theme also gives me a headache. I'd take a few less features to have something easier on my eyes.

And if that was the silliest thing you have ever heard, you don't read these forums enough. :D

Does the rest of the iPhone UI also give you a headache?

I think there's a time frame inherent. I saw it after about 90 minutes today but that was the first time.

I don't think it's a time frame. If I understand it correctly Tweetie will only load a certain number of tweets. If during the inactivity period you get more tweets than that you will get the "gap detection" thing so you can load the rest.

That makes sense, and explains why I haven't gotten the "gap". I don't have an absurd amount of tweets coming in during a given day, so Tweetie probably loads all of the ones that I get. I should follow some prolific Tweeters for a short time to test this out.

You mentioned this before as well, so I'll get detailed to a stupid degree haha... The rest of the UI is not all bright white.

Spring board... Black background.
MMS... Blue background, green and grey windows.
Calendar... Grey background.
Photos... Mostly covered by color images.
Camera... Obviously what ever the camera sees.
Youtube... 50% of the screen covered with color images.
Compass... Brown background.
Maps... Lots of color there.
Weather... Blue background.
Clock... Grey background.
Calculator... Dark Grey background.
Notes... Yellow Background.
Settings... Grey background, decent separation.
Itunes and App Store... Grey backgrounds.
Voice Memos... Black background.
Stocks... Dark colos, easy on the eyes.
Phone... Blue background.
Safari... You're not looking at a white screen long enough to care.
Mail... Mail is stark white, and horrible. This is the worst one, as you spend the most time reading through. I WISH we have themes in the Mail app as well.
iPod... White list until you hit play. Again, not looking at it long enough

So the answer is NO, the rest of the UI does not give me a head ache, as the UI is MOSTLY different then the bright white annoyance of Tweetie 2. :)

Actually I did ask before and you didn't answer. Thanks for the "stupid" remark.

And Tweetie's UI is pretty similar to the iPhone's UI, its standard UI elements are mostly white and gray. The fact that some stuff like Safari and Youtube ends up having content that's not as light doesn't change the fact that the basic UI is mostly white and gray.

You misread my stupid comment. It was aimed at myself for getting that detailed, not at you in any way. I can be a jerk at times, but not an outright ****** for no reason. ;)

I stand by my comments. The only App that looks similar is the Mail app, and that too is annoying for many reasons. No other app utilizing the UI makes you stare at a bright white screen for that length of time (other then Mail). Even Tweetie 2 knows this, and they said they are adding themes back into the app with the next release, so when that happens, if Twitterrific doesn't update (something a lot better then the one 2 days ago) then I'll look back into Tweetie 2. Until then, the lack of themes is a deal breaker.

The thing is, a lot of the UI that isn't that light is because it has other content in it (Safari, YouTube, Photos...). Stuff like Contacts, iCal, Mail and even the Settings are mainly white and gray. Tweetie uses exactly the same UI elements that Apple uses in most of the iPhone OS.

If you take a look at the Interface Builder in the SDK you'd see how similar to Apple's own design Tweetie is, while other apps with themes change most of it.

Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I just don't get why so many complaints when Tweetie looks like it could be Apple's own Twitter app, if they ever made one.

And Tweetie's not adding themes because they "know" their app is too bright, they're doing it because people asked for it.

They knew better in the original Tweetie by having theme options.

Allow me to rephrase and add to that...

Tweetie's not adding themes because they "know" their app is too bright, they're doing it because people asked for it... because their app is too bright!

And now they "know". :D

Some of you must have your brightness cranked to 11 or something as Tweetie 2 isn't that bright to me.

To add fuel to the fire here is my summation:

SimplyTweet seems to be like an application from the Windows world, has every conceivable feature thrown in, which makes it bloated and really clutters its UI, it just seems too busy to me. Actually I'll take that back it seems more like a Linux app that throws all features into the app without little thought of how they all fit together with the intent of allowing the end user to customize it for their own needs.

Tweetie 2 however seems much more like an Apple designed app, they know the features people want but think long & hard on how to implement them elegantly. The main UI is very uncluttered and allows you to simply do what you mainly use the app for and that is to read tweets. That isn't to say it isn't powerful as it is, it is just implemented intuitively so you aren't bombarded with features across the entire UI.

Maybe it's just bright to some people. Believe it or not everyone is different and some have sensitive eyes, like myself. It's not too bad for me but guess what...it might be for someone else!!! I know, it's hard to believe that there are people out there that are different than you and you're not the only one who matters. If the themes are the only reason someone doesn't get the new version then so be it. What's it to you?

Whatever.

If they "knew" the app was too bright they would change the colors of the UI. They're adding themes because they know people like options.

Been on 2.1 for a few days and have liked it but, as OP said, I really don't like the new RT function and how you can't add your own notes. Tweetie should at least have a setting to turn the official RT option off.

Just use the new Quote tweet feature, swipe a tweet, then press the right most icon, admittedly it is an extra step so slightly annoying.

Actually, I used to use the black theme and was like WTF when tweetie 2 came out but now I actually like it. It is a matter of getting used to it I guess. I wouldn't mind the dark theme return though :p.
