I'm personally not a fan of Keurig--but I can see where it would be a practical choice in this (and other) situation.

Years back (1980-something), Melitta made an interesting 1 cup coffee maker that brewed right into a regular looking mug. It was marketed for "travel"--but it seems like that was an ideal solution for a lot of uses, like the office/classroom/dorm room.
We bought this at Super K-Mart in 1999. I took it to work (Indio, Ca) and it was what I used at my desk. It has one of those permanent filters and still works.

Two of these were also bought some time in 2018 I believe. 4 cups. One is still down at the office in Mesa (I work from home).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the Keurig's either, but I bought one shortly after I got my wife hers. It is NOT what I use on the weekends, but for that caffiene hit it does what you need.

My stock came in today. 20 cans, $25 on eBay. These are almost impossible to find in my area and they sell out fast. In the last six or seven months I have only seen them on Walmart's shelves once and I bought two of the four cases there that day (4-pack).

eBay vendors want ridiculous prices for a 4-pack (really, $50+?!!!!), so this price for 20 cans I was willing to pay.

For those that do not know, Starbucks had a recall on these due to the tops not completely sealing with the lip of the cans. This recall, plus the supply chain issues has meant they aren't available much in my area.

Fry's had them for a while in SINGLE cans that they wanted $2.99 for. That's $12 for a 4-pack that normally costs about $5. No way.

eBay FTW.

Sunday morning Mac and coffee.

Seattle's Best Portside blend in a Krispy Kreme mug. This mug is pre-Krispy Kreme's untimely departure from Arizona in 2006 (they returned in 2008). My wife has a white mug.

Wednesday morning Mac and coffee. :)

A 1982 purchase at Knott's Berry Farm. I was probably 11 at the time.

Not really used much over the years because as a teen and young adult I didn't drink coffee and was far more interested in soda.

What's the yellow remote(?) thing for?
It's for this…Whynter ARC-14S (14,000 BTU). Have to run it on a separate circuit, so a thick extension cable from the kitchen. It trips the circuit breakers if we have it on the same line with all the computers in the front room.

Central air broke in July 2020. So, there is portable A/C downstairs, one upstairs in my daughter's room and two window A/C units in my son's room and the master bedroom.

Fixing central A/C means a new unit. Cost runs around $6,000 to $8,000. We can pay that over time, but haven't been in the spot to afford monthly payments - yet.

The unit above was $600 on Amazon and this is our second summer with it. Does pretty well. We manage to hold about 80-85º F on August days when it's 115-120º out.

The stand in front supports an air-recirculator fan that helps to distribute the A/C air when the A/C is struggling to cool the room (we've learned a few things through two summers with no central air).

Today's evening brew: Peet's organic french (dark) roast coffee.

Freshly ground whole bean with "smoky, bittersweet, hints of caramel" flavor. Lightly sweetened with organic clover honey and a splash of whole milk (I'm out of the half & half).

Enjoyed in the Harley-Davidson flamin' coffee mug.

Hate it when I'm out of H&H. Milk does something odd to drip coffee. Hope it came out good though.

Seattle's Best, how far we have fallen! Or rather, how little Starbucks has paid attention to you.

Two of my favorite things! Tacos and Mac!

Found a new Mexican restaurant locally and am absolutely happy over it! Rice and beans are one of the hardest things to get right in a Mexican restaurant and while I like what I got there, my wife (who is Mexican) says they taste right and absolutely wonderful!

So, the new place passes the test and that's gonna be our new Mexican restaurant go to!!!!

One of the things I like to do sometimes is look at the places that my eBay items ship from. I learn stuff and it's fun to find out about other places.

This time around, a package I have coming is shipping from Sumner, WA. Turns out Sumner's a small place to the east of Tacoma. But what I also found interesting is that Sumner is also the home location of Dillanos Coffee Roasters.

I have a package of DCR Unity Roast coming from them (from Sumner, WA). Trying them out. I'd never have known they existed unless I started looking around.

DCR-Unity-Coffee-Bag.png

Will report back on whether the coffee is good or not. The price is good though!

So the coffee (DCR Unity Roast) came today. Very nice roast! This (for us) is a Saturday (it's the weekend!) blend.

Now we need to explore the rest of their offerings!

So, two things (hah!!!!) today.

1. I tried using the French Press again. Better this time, but not eager to immediately repeat the process. I gave the beans a very coarse grind but I'm guessing I didn't allow it to steep long enough. We'll see what happens next time.

2. I found Loyal Coffee, which is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was while doing some searching for an iPhone wallpaper (for myself) I was working on. If you weren't aware, the color blue is a color for loyalty, so whoever designed this knew what they were doing.

And I figured I should probably try the coffee since…well, it's my iPhone wallpaper now. $12 for 12 ounces. I've paid more for less, so not too bad. Shipping was only $5 so there's that.

Looking forward to trying it and will let you guys know how it goes.

Garfield calendar
This reminds me of a teacher I had in high school for a couple of years who always had Far Side cartoon calendar in his classroom. It was probably a nice start to the school day seeing the cartoon of the day.

And nice MacBook--the black models were, I thought, the nicest.

I have found your posts very interesting & entertaining!! My grandfather was a coffee aficionado. I can remember as a young boy seeing literally dozens of coffee pots - some he even designed & made himself. This was before the modern perculators came into common use. And of course he died before ever seeing his first Mr Coffee!!! He would grind beans he bought from A&P with a hand crank grinder. Always trying different brands - loved the "Eight O'Clock brand as well as a house brand from A&P. Coffee making used to be quite a challenge to those who were "connoisseurs"My grandmother just left the coffee making up to him. That and the grits he used to make in a double boiler with cream from the cows they had on their farm.

It's interesting because my own father was a Marine (Korean War). Therefore, as part of the Corps, coffee was ubiquitous and he drank it. But he was no connoisseur. As a kid there was Folgers and Sanka in the house. :(

I tried it as a kid, black of course. I avoided it thereafter. It wasn't until 1995, when I was 24, that I met my wife and got the concept of cream and sugar from her - as well as espresso based drinks. I came to love it and as it turns out, I was better at making it so she passed the duty of doing that off to me. She complains whenever she has to make it herself. :D

I myself, am no connoisseur either. I do not have the money to be one. And any proper connoisseur would look at the coffee devices and brands in our kitchen and probably wince. But that said, it works for us and we like what we use and have. Like your grandfather, I'll always keep striving towards a better cup.

A good cup of coffee always complements a Mac nicely!

Oh good, a thread about two of my fave things! Coffee and macs!

Funnily enough, I was browsing this thread when the 2009 17-inch Macbook Pro I ordered for media consumption came today in the post.

I know that some people are going to say "Uh... why do you need one of those when you have an M1 MBP?"

Well, the MBP is for the things that I want to do every day (video editing, photo editing, recording music, streaming music, writing posts, etc) and I want all the things that I do on my iMac in a small, portable format (i.e. the 13-inch form factor). I think that the 16-inch form factor is too big for that, and I have enough power in the smaller form factor to get by (and I'm not lugging a more expensive, heavier piece of equipment around in my bag). It's light and very portable and I like the key travel and the ease of the smaller keyboard to type faster.

The 17-inch MBP is going to mainly be what I use for consuming media and a way for me to free up the space on my MBP hard drive without it being taken up by 100GB of files. And I've always wanted to check one of them out as well. I didn't get the 2010-2011, or the mids 00s 17-inch MBP for reasons, such as failing GPUs. I read that the 09s were the most stable, and had the least problems, so I saw one on eBay for a good offer and decided to go for it.

IMG_0291.png

When I got it out of the cardboard box, it was well wrapped up, which I am pleased about. I can keep the extra bubble wrap for something else if I want to sell something. I can also just cut it up if there's too much of it.

IMG_0292.png

It's in good condition as well. It's either refurbished, or it was given a good clean. I got it from a good dealer, it seems. I turned it on as well, and it came with El Capitan, the last supported system for the '09 model, which is a good run, imo.

IMG_0294.png

I couldn't get into the admin account, because I didn't know the password but there was a guest account that I could access, so I went in there to explore it, but I couldn't do much with it. Instead, I decided to take some pictures with everyone's favorite background, comparing the size of the 17-inch to the MBP 15-inch (which needs its hard drive fixed and won't load properly, so no home screen backgrounds, sorry about that), my current 13-inch MBP, and the iBook G4 12 inch.

IMG_0296.png

IMG_0297.png

IMG_0300.png

Woah, the iBook is even thick compared to the 17-inch MBP. I know back in the day the Powerbooks and G4s were hailed for their portability (and components weren't as slick), but even by 2009 standards, they're thick.

For an added bonus, have the evolution of screens from 2004-present. I guess this picture is my default background now for my active devices, but comparing them with the same image is a good way to see how the resolutions and screens have changed over time, and how much they vary from device to device.

IMG_0301.png

So, in the end, I also managed to access the Applications folder without needing a pass for (most of) the Apps and I got my 4Tb drive, so now I am copying them across so that I don't lose anything when I go to reset the user details and the files on the Macbook. It's got about 15 minutes remaining at the moment.

IMG_0303.png

So now, I'm going to do stuff on my M1 and drink some coffee as I wait for the files to copy across.

As eyoungren said above:

This is an offshoot of that. :D

No judgement here. We all buy whatever it is we want (at least I do) and the justification (if there MUST be one) is "Because I wanted it".

In my case, I had my fill with others telling me as a young kid that I couldn't have something because I didn't have a good reason for it. That's BS. We don't have to hold ourselves to other peoples opinions about how we should or should not spend our OWN money. ;)

There is the money shot! :D

Enjoy both!

Oh, great! Thanks for showing me this. I didn't see that there lol.

Exactly. All my laptops have specific purposes; even niche ones, like the 17-inch MBP, and its screen, and the iBook for iTunes 7 to sync to my old iPod Touch 1st Gen. If someone wants to save it, they can. If someone wants a treat, they can have it. It's their money. Even if you don't agree with how they spend it.

There is the money shot! :D

Enjoy both!

Thanks :D
