Apple (obviously) didn’t invent oled, but neither did Samsung. But what is wrong with Apple clinging a phrase as Samsung took a page from apples book and coined “infinity display”.
Samsung may not have invented oled but they are the ones who have pioneered it for the last 6 years so they can be forgiven if they use a term like infinity display. Apple deserved to use the term Retina display back in 2010. Now I don't think they deserve to use any fancy terms.

Personally, I'm much more concerned about the OS of the phone and features such as the camera than the aesthetics.
The OS is important but I value features I can use over the way it looks. IMO Samsung phones were better when they were ugly. Not saying they aren't good now but I preferred Samsung when they had the everything but the kitchen sink attitude.

So despite how the note 8 looks, which is pretty nice imo. I've bought it because of what it can do.

Hmm and yet I've seen a fair few people claim the iPhone 8 is ugly, the bezel at the top is ugly, the white colour is ugly, the camera hump is ugly... most of them in this forum.
Personally I think the Note 8 is stunning.

Beuty is in the eye of the beholder...
The dummies with the white fronts look terrible. The black front ones look better. The render of the new copper colour looks nice with the black front. However regardless of how ugly or nice the iPhone 8 looks it's going. To be too small for me. With the new aspect ratio 5.8 inches will be smaller than my current 7 plus. However the note 8 is 6.3 inches so I'm happy about that.

If your not happy with a massive 6.3" screen, you'll never be satisfied!

It's a phone....

Forgive me for not understanding, but this isn't a car, a suit, or your hair cut.

It's a phone. No one looks at your phone and says "hot damn, now that person knows style". You are just one person in a sea of ubiquitous smartphones.

The note 8 looks fine, as does the rumored iPhone 8. It's comes down to form and function. The note 8 may have more bezels than the essential phone, but it's still very small for the screen size.

The more important questions is this; is the size and form/design conducive to everyday use as well as high levels of productivity. Based on some intial hands on reviews, I think Samsung has struck the right balance.

Yeah I think it's fair to say Samsung virtually unilaterally pushed oled to where it is today, no other manufacturer put anything like as much effort into using it, manufacturing it and making it competitive than they did.

Apple were the first to breach 300ppi, and the first to really make a thing of it, but Nokia's 2005 N80 was the first mainstream phone I know of to push pixel density into 'retina' territory - approx 260 (same as iPad) to be exact. Looking at my iPad screen from about a foot away it's still pleasingly sharp, and I remember being blown away seeing the N80s screen at the time. (So by the time the iPhone 4 swung around I think I might have been one of the only underwhelmed people around!)

Apple don't tend to pioneer, they make niche/ awkward technologies into mass marketable benefits that work well - I guess really that's as big an achievement as creating the tech in the first place in a way.

I agree with most of this. Apple being the the first to push past 300ppi made it acceptable to coin the term Retina display. However oled is already pretty main stream so I don't really see Apple as popularising it as they have with other technologies.

People made fun of the iPhone 5 when it came out about how tall the phone is, but the Samsung 8 is awkwardly tall.

Slap a nice case on it, that'll make the back look OK. ;) (and you'll probably need a case since the curved screen means it's more likely to get damaged if it falls)

But seriously, I think it looks amazing from the front, and the specs are definitely top notch. If I weren't so deep in the Apple ecosystem these days, I'd seriously consider switching back to Android for a bit.

I moved from Samsung/Android to iPhone several years ago, I love iOS, Android seems increasingly less appealing (I still track it), can't see ever going back... and yet, for some reason I'm always covetous of the latest Note. Can't explain why... it's the only Android phone that routinely has me watching YouTube clips every fall, etc.

Right, when anyone says it’s extremely ugly, I have a funny feeling that they’ve based all opinions on the plastic dummy models with a presumably inaccurate white front.

Do people really care what the camera module looks like? I'm kind of serious, I rarely look at the back of my phone.

I really don't care much either, being that I slap a slim back case of most of my phones. Since everyone is comparing, I just stated my opinion. But the rare times that I have my device naked, I would say color is somewhat of importance.

I'm ecstatic that logos and company names are now being relegated to the back of the phone, so I kind of resigned myself to having a phone with an ugly back as a very acceptable trade off for having a logo-less front.

Yea, that a huge pro in this infinite display trend.

I walk down the streets of New York City and everyone is staring at their phones. Thousands of people and phones. I couldn't tell you what most of the brands of phones are that I see. They are usually in cases and for the most part look so similar that I have no clue nor do I care.

There's definitely some Picasso going on with the iPhone 8. Not sure where Apple is going with this design language.

The Note 8 on the other hand has this clean, symmetrical industrial design. Very pleasing to the eye and hand.

I personally still think the most perfectly designed and aesthetically appealing phone of all time was the iPhone 4/4S.
