No, the pixels in the rounded corners would remain black.. within them would be normal icons/etc. not sure how much better I could explain it.

As for video, I was referring to movies which are well over 16:9. You would not get any black besides the specifically blacked out top and bottom to exclude content in rounded corners. Someone made a concept after I suggested to them how it could work to maximally use the screen for movies, and here it is:

The new iPhone is going to have rounded corners and they are not going to black them out. That would be a ridiculous waste of screen.

I love the design of the iPhone 8. And lets all admit it, Samsung makes some pretty ugly af phones.

It's only a waste of screen to people who can't understand that it's not a waste of screen. See, if you have display in rounded corners then you can place elements within the corners which are shrouded in a black background. This way you are using the screen, but not making the display look hideous by coloring in rounded corners of a display. Now, the bottom portion of the display rounding is fine, but the top notch corners should be black to hide the notch, that's the reality.

The S8 is beautiful and I expect the S9 to be even more beautiful and refined with an under the screen fingerprint sensor. I'm guessing you'd love anything with the Apple logo.
The S8 looks okay, except for the curved edge screen. That's embarrassing. The Note 8 rear gigantic camera and sensor window is beyond hideous though.

Eh. I've just never been a huge Samsung fan or fan of their products.

If you notice the pictures that have been posted that show the clock, signal, and battery they are shown on a white background. I don't see anything blacked out. Earlier you also stated that they needed to square off the bottom or the round corners would look terrible. Now you say rounded corners at the bottom are fine. I just think that you really criticized Samsung for rounded corners on the S8, but now since you realize the Apple might do the same thing it's becoming ok. It's ok to admit it...lol... I wouldn't hold it against you because it's a very common thing in the Apple world. Many things like OLED and wireless charging for example are terrible until Apple does it then it's wonderful.

I think the Note looks so much better than any Apple phone, ever.
The new oled iphones, if we can trust the pictures, look good but they still look a bit older, imo.
The oled iphone still has, what I consider to be, a reasonably large continuous bezel around it.
I don't understand the word, "bezeless" being bandied around in regards to this new iphone.

The Note 5 looked to have less side bezels than the new iPhone, either are hardly bezeless.
That said, it still looks good in black but in white, what a mess.
I guess that's why there will be no white fronted OLED iphone.

The Camera on the back looks like how you would imagine it would look, apart from how much it protrudes.
If that is how it looks on release, you'd need a reasonably thick case to stop it from touching when being placed down.
The Note 8 camera doesn't protrude much at all, it is also how I'd imagine it to be.
Is it aesthetically nicer than the iPhone's? Personally, I think so.
I like centralised cameras, the camera on a corner isn't my cup of tea but that said, I'd take that over low camera performance any day.
There's not many people out there declaring the Note 8 as "ugly as ****", in fact, quite the opposite..but each to their own ;)

Nope, rounded corners at the bottom are comparatively okay. The truth is, they're actually bad though, no matter what Apple does. What I was really saying is that the top corners being colored is aesthetically and functionally idiotic.

Concerning the S8, it uses rounded edges and corners and it is therefore terrible. Allowing refraction and reflection of light. Moreover, it shows video content in the rounded corner, does it not? That is horrible as all media content should remain square (corners), in its natural state.

I know the iPhone will cut off the top and bottom portions of the screen during video playback for the square corners.

I use an S8+ and 7+ daily. Media content is far more immersive on the S8+ for several reasons. The infinity display guts the iPhone display. It’s not even close.

And the fact that the iphone X display cant be fully utilized in a practical sense is going to be problem compared to flagships offered by Samsung.

As for overall design I’d rank the S8 high with the Note 8 close behind. Certainly the best Samsung has ever done and definitely better than anything Apple has done after the 4/4S.

The Note 8 is one of the worst designed smartphones ever, and they both have idiotic rear fingerprint sensors. Moreover, the Note has a gigantic window on the back that looks tragically bad

We're all entitled to our own opinions but there's not many sharing the same opinion as yours.
What is, in your opinion, the pinnacle of good phone design?
What is awesome as ****?

Yes, and they all look a billion times better than the travesty that is the Note 8 camera window. No reasonable person would defend that in an aesthetic sense

Hey at least they have fingerprint sensors. I'm guessing you haven't used an S8 for any length of time. I've had an S8+ since launch day. With a case on the phone finding the sensor with my finger is easy. After a couple weeks or so I didn't even think about it anymore. In fact it's almost better one handed since I can grasp my phone naturally and touch the sensor. LG and others do implement the rear scanner better, but it's fine on the Samsung.

Many times I just use the iris scanner, but when pulling the phone from my pocket while walking the rear scanner works just fine.

The fact is Apple is way behind on smartphone design and they are just finally catching up with the iPhone X or whatever it'll be called. There is a lot of nice hardware out these days. Samsung is right at the top in design and LG has made huge progress with their G6 and V30. You can argue software if you want (cases can be made either way) but when it comes to hardware design Apple is pretty mid-pack these days. The days of ugly, fat, plastic android phones are long over.

The sheer envy.......smh ...totally not true and the world will not even agree with these absurd comments. Seems like you would enjoy the note 8 so stop showing your passive aggressiveness.

You choose, what is the bee's knees in your opinion?
I'll just tell you what I think would be the optimal smartphone design:

Glass front to stainless side band to glass back, like the seamless (feeling) 2017 iPhones will be. Then a flush camera in an oval vertical cutout (as the iPhone X of course won't be due to physics). The reason vertical is better is due to the fact that it follows the design of the phone better with length vs width. The bottom would have holes identical to the iPhone 7, and the SIM tray would be gone. The display would be identical to the iPhone X except the corners would never be lit, but instead house status elements shouted in black, while the bottom would be a thin home bar which houses small Touchbar type elements which are dynamic depending on the app. I would make all of the bezels as small as possible so the display stops just before the front glass begins to curve.

Envy? I'd enjoy it?

Somehow....I think if the camera cutout was round and in the middle or in the exact spot at the 7+ you would be defending that design as the best design...... I think whatever design the iPhone has will turnout to be the "best" design in your opinion....

The sides being bezel-less is just kind of an illusion on the N8/S8, the bezel is still there but more hidden because of the curved screen. Now you lose valuable screen real estate because of the curved edges and the phone becomes even more narrow than the already terrible 18.5:9 aspect ratio. I don't disagree with you that the iphones side bezels could be narrower or even eliminated, but I still think it looks better than the N8's sides.

How much "valuable" screen real estate do you figure we're losing? I'm guessing it's completely negligible.

I won't get into "ugly" vs "not ugly" design. That's all too subjective. I think the current iPhone designs are unremarkable to look at, but feel nice in the hand and very premium. However I feel Samsung hits both of those points out of the park with its current generation. YMMV.

ANY screen space is valuable, otherwise we all wouldn't be on here griping and moaning about bezel sizes. Even just a few mm on each side is significant, especially because it's multiplied by the very thin aspect ratio of the phone.
