Personally, I love the current design, but the one company that could top it is Apple...I can see it happening...

Yes I can see it happening Hp owning Apple. Yeah everybody on this forum knows it Hp 8710W owns the Macbook Pro 17". Yeah Yeah the 8510P also owns the Macbook pro 15".

Definitely need a redesign for the MBP. Make it white like the MB and the keyboard should be like the macbook too. What I am pretty much saying is give me a macbook that is 15.4 inches in screen size.

magnetic latch.
hide the IR sensor (perhaps in the cd drive like the mac mini).
better iSight.
slightly thinner (.8/.9").
keep the keyboard.
higher resolution screen for 15incher.
another couple of USB ports.
user replaceable HD.
better battery.
ditch the express34 slot, and fill it with fans!

As much as I like the design of the macbook pro I still think it could be improved, apart from the obvious user upgrade features, how about getting rid of that stupid grey plastic surround on the bottom level. I'm sure by now that they could extend the metal just a tad to make it look complete - asus do on their 17" windows macbook pro looky likey (in black) ;)

Not only shouldn't the design be changed much at all, if anything, the great design of the MBP should be copied over to more of Apple's products.

My girlfriend really wanted to get a Mac after playing with my Powerbook g4 (of the same basic design as the MBP). She didn't like the look of the Macbook but she loved the look of the MPB. The only problem was the MBP costs more than she wanted to spend. So she wound up getting a Sony Vaio instead because it was in her price range and looked nice. If only the Albook type design was used in more of Apple's products then they'd have had at least one more switcher.

(And I don't consider the iMac to be inspired by the MBP. They both use some of the same metal, but the similarities end there.)

I'll agree with the latch and hard drive, but this thing is so perfect, it could almost replace my significant other....

I wouldn't tell them that though ;-)

I don't like changes for the sake of changing something. What's wrong with MBP design? I can only think of adding magnetic latch mechanism and even that's because I would want to get rid of those few holes on the case :)

Im just wondering though if the magnetic latch might add more heat to the unit when used closed as a hard drive for an external monitor? might contribute to more screen problems

I would love to hear how that might happen...

Good point... maybe velcro?

the current design allows for more airflow thus releasing heat when used in the closed position and on.... just a thought Im no engineer:rolleyes:

It's possible. I hadn't thought of the heat flow when shut like that. I wonder how it large an affect it has? I still don't mind the latch at all. I love the MBP.

on my G1 MacBook Pro, heat is a serious serious issue, i have recorded up to 83 degrees (centigrade)

sadly, as a result of a thin computer, with few air vents this is what happens.

seeing as my MBP is mainly a desk machine, i really wouldnt mind having some vents on the bottom, if this meant cooler, faster operation.

Pardon me for the negativity, but I'll be the second (after the OP) to say I dislike the MBP design.

I much prefer the MacBook design, and even the old Ti design was a little nicer (though certainly worse in terms of hinge/latch) than this one.

The 17" model especially just has so much dead area.

I'm not saying I hate it, but I think it's a pretty average design.

Its beginning to show its age. I would like so see it resemble the new iMac design.

what 17" laptop doesn't? there's so much surface area, there's bound to be a lot of "dead" area. i actually like the simple design approach. i hate things that are needlessly busy with buttons, lights or other doohickies.
