So, yesterday I sent an email to Tim Cook, highlighting the issues and experiences that I had using the iUP process (this will be my 2nd year). Even mentioned that I doubted he would read the email.
This morning at 8:20, to my absolute surprise, I received a call from the “office of Tim Cook” who had “read my email with interest”. She apologised about the experience I (and countless others) had, and assured me that generally speaking this isn’t the way they wanted the iUP experience to be. Apple realised that this was the first year that UK iUP members could actually upgrade the handsets, and know that there were some lessons learned about stock allocation as well as giving iUP preorders some priority (as they had in the US with pre-authorisation).
I mentioned that people were able to circumvent the stock issues by reserving as iUP and then changing in store to outright buying and the lady was very apologetic. Apples model with iUP is to sign up as many people as they can to tie them into the iPhone (which is awesome business sense) but the various loopholes were causing allocations to go to the wrong people. She was in no doubt that people were reserving on iUP (non existing members) and then opting to pay in store outright to then scalp on the various markets. This is NOT what Apple want, and i'm assured that they value their loyal customers (admittedly it didn't seem like it this year). They are hoping to change the process next year to say that any iUP reservations need to go through at LEAST the credit check first (ie process it as an iUP) and if rejected only then can the customer purchase it outright.
She was offering to view my case personally, but i told her that this morning/last night (with or without intervention, not sure!) that my order had now been approved for pickup and i was actually on my way to the store to collect.
I thanked her for the call and told her that I was pleasantly surprised that from one email that was directly sent to Mr Cook himself, within 18 hours someone had actually reached out. I don't care how crap people think Apple as a company is or their technology is "so last generation", their customer service is light years ahead of anyone else out there.
Just thought i'd share.
PS...its been a LONG time since i was impressed by the build quality of a product (not saying that the last iterations of the iPhone were bad build, just got used to the standard they had set i guess) but wow...this thing is amazing. I feel like i've ruined the dynamics of the phone just by putting a clear full body skin protector on it, but running my fingers between the screen and the stainless steel, i can't actually feel where one ends and the other begins...this feels like the process is accurate to microns. i wouldn't even let my wife hold it...i showed her from far away
