They will come from China to U.K, then from Hinckley to people, same as every year.

Last few years I’ve ordered direct from Apple, a lot of the time a date later than release date, but then turns up on release date. Usually cos they end up with more stock arriving earlier than expected, plus due to people cancelling.

I guess it’s quite unusual for an iPad launch to have this much drama! (Although it’s probably just a relatively small number of geeks like us).

Although I don’t upgrade that often, I don’t remember there being any issue getting hold of iPads at launch in the past. I’ve normally just bought one, either by walking into a store, or ordering online for next day delivery. (I also seem to remember there being very little time between announcement and availability).

I think it’s a little bit of a perfect storm though
- there must be a lot of people who have had gen 1 & 2 Pros for a few years, and waiting for a meaningful upgrade (the screen in particular)
- rumours have been circulating for months, so anyone who does even rudimentary research has known there’s a new Pro in the works (probably killing 4th gen sales - they‘ll no doubt have a lot of “spare“ 2020 models for warranty exchanges etc)
- the 2020 model was a bit weak anyway (in light of the latest Air)
- the global chip shortage inducing a bit of fear of scarcity

As people have said though, there’s bound to be some stock in retail stores on launch day. Apple will presumably be committed to providing some to their usual partners. They are however being a little vague as to when launch day is.

As I said before, there’ll be the initial shortage while they fulfil pre-orders, then there will likely be a second wave of demand after reviews come out (and you can see why perhaps they’re in no hurry to get reviews out whilst they struggle to meet pre-orders). After that, I suspect they won’t sell very many. I also suspect the 6th gen won’t have the same feeding frenzy, even if it does have an OLED screen.

So what are people’s confidence levels for this coming Friday, or do we think it really is 27th May ( for those that are currently showing 27th May )

My current thinking:

21st May - 30% confidence level
27th May - 60% confidence level
After 27th May - 10% confidence level

My worry is they’re prioritising US market so we could be the 27th. But then they normally display the later of the two dates and the email originally said 21-27 so I don’t know

I do wish they’d use more standard language/phrasing in their emails and on the website/app to minimise ambiguity

The US are a completely different unit with it having 5G mmwave. No way they won’t have EU / UK versions on the 21st.

I am pretty confident we will see deliveries this Friday. It can still go PTS Wednesday Shipped Thursday for next day delivery

Well well well. Amazon UK have £45 off the 11" 256Gb version - due 27th (same as Apple order), so cancelled Apple and gone with this...
That’s pretty good since it’s not out yet haha! I went for my iPad Pro 12.9 from Amazon. Delivery on the 28th. Looking forward to it! Hoping they will get them on the 21st and deliver them on Saturday.

Well I think this is another confirmation that for the UK it's going to be 27th and not the 21st ☹️ Amazon show 'this item will be released on 27th May'

This is one of the sketchiest launchs by apple for sure. Almost 3 weeks after pre-orders (pre orders that went online without apple saying an specific time, or preparing the web) we still don’t know an Official launch date, if we can go to the stores to buy one, or even if there will be stock there...

I really have to agree with you. It’s shabby to say the least.

Has the UK ever had a different date to the US in the last 10 years? I don't think so. Apple have prided themselves on their global launches. So this would be very strange if the UK launch was a Thursday?! a week later. If we were a week behind it would be 28th

I think that’s reasonable - they don’t want to look like they’ve screwed up the launch, nor do they want to look like they only care about the US market. I’d be very surprised if no one gets theirs on 21st. Might be limited numbers though, then maybe the rest coming through over the next week or so.
