As long as I have FaceId I don't care if they make the best fingerprint reader in the universe, I still won't use it. FaceId rules.
I've got nothing against them implementing an under the screen fingerprint reader, if it doesn't replace FaceId and doesn't add $200 to the price of the phone.

Yeah Face ID is just so convenient in comparison to finger print sensors. I realise that every time I use my 2017 12.9” iPad Pro.

One situation in which FaceId is less convenient is when a device is used by two persons. You could register the fingerprints of two persons with TouchId, but you can't register two faces. But apart from that, FaceId is bliss. 😊

Edit: I know there's a feature to register a second appearance, but I haven't tried that. I'm not sure if it really allows you to register two completely different faces, or they must be reasonably similar and it actually registers a combination of both, not each individual one.

That doesn’t apply to me since I don’t share my devices with anyone else.

Very few consumers allow secondary users to have access to their iPhones. It’s just not a common practice, so your scenario wouldn’t really be that much of an advantage regarding Face ID/Touch ID.

I have access to my kids' phones. But whereas one is an 8+ and has one of my fingerprints stored, the other is an 11 and requires me to enter the PIN every time. Also, now with the lockdown and all, the kids' school has moved on-line, and they use my wife's iPads. TouchId makes sharing the iPads easier; FaceId would require them to know the PIN and to enter it every time.
Not that entering the PIN would be a big issue, mind you. First world problems... :)

The people who absolutely love Touch ID and despise Face ID are people who never grab their phone with wet hands, a band aid, or cuts on their finger. They also don’t wear gloves when it’s cold out. Or they are students who can’t pull their phone up from under their desk to unlock it lol.

I like Touch ID. I have two fingerprints from each hand on it so it doesn’t matter what hand I pick it up with. I like how easy it is to use and it’s secure enough.

Personally I don’t feel comfortable with an IR beam shining in my eyes every time I want to unlock my phone. If my next phone is Face ID only I’m going to use the passcode only.

I would welcome the addition of an under-screen Touch ID in addition to face ID as it would provide more choice for consumers. I, however, would almost certainly continue using face ID as I much prefer it to any touch ID system. It's so seamless to use for me it's easy to forget about it completely.

It doesn’t sound like it would be terribly useful to me as I would want the phone to lock in those scenarios without me needing to do so manually. It would need to be much more local, such as a Bluetooth connection to my watch, but also within 1 or 2 meters.

Just curious, what scenario are you in that you need it for such short distances?
2 meters is literally several steps away.

Why?

You're reaching at a far fetched scenario.

LOL, what? If I’m in the toilet and my phone is 3 meters away in the bedroom I want it to be locked. If I’m in the kitchen and my phone is 4 metres away in the dining room I want it to be locked. If I‘m napping on the settee and my phone is 50cm away I want it to be locked whilst I’m asleep!

You said 1 to 2 meters initially. How many times are you going to leave your phone for others to get to within such a short distance? Do you have kids who's main focus in life is to go through your phone every time you temporarily leave at a distance of several meters? Don't want your significant other snooping? Like I don't get it.

I want to keep my phone secure when it’s out of my sight or I am otherwise engaged and not watching over it. That’s the requirement and it’s irrelevant what the reasons are.

Then you're the abnormal case, and smartlock isn't for you.

Correct, smartlock is too limited to be of use to me and however many others there are where the same requirements apply.

Now if Apple could use their UWB technology to implement distance and directional triggers that’d be infinitely more useful.

I strongly suspect due to the pandemic, touch ID under the display will almost be mandatory technology moving forward, simply because we need an ‘alternative‘, as mask wearing is a part of our future for a very long time. It’s not just a matter of convenience, it’s almost necessary.

Why mandatory? The alternative is to enter the pin code. I don’t get why people are making such a fuss about occasionally having to enter a four digit code.

Plus it’s only temporary! And only for some people who choose to wear a face mask. It would seem crazy to me to change your entire product stack on that basis.
