If the current baseband works with the gevey sim, just make a custom no baseband upgrade using redsn0w and then you can update without worry using that custom ipsw. If you're not upgrading to 6.1.3, you need to also stitch the SHSH blobs with the custom ipsw

About factory unlock, I'm unsure about that

Thanks Darrick. I have a few follow up queries:
1. I tried d/l redsnow but apparently there are too many versions available. Should I just "d/l redsn0w 0.9.15b3 (Windows) NEW" or do I need to work with any other version?
2. Are you suggesting I should go for 6.1.3? I am not sure what that stitch thing is all about as I am not even that tech savvy. So whatever version of iOS is easier to update w/o any risks, I'll be happy to upgrade to the one. So please advise accordingly. :)
3. Also, are there risks involved like bricking the iphone etc. while doing such upgrade? If so, what is the % probability?

I'd say go with the latest version of redsn0w to make the custom no BB upgrade ipsw which you indicated in your post already

Is your device currently jailbroken? If so, open cydia and click TSS center. At the top, what iOS versions of SHSH blobs does it say you have?

Yes, the device is Jailbroken.

SHSH: iOS 4.3.5, 5.0.1, 5.1, 5.1.1, 5.1.1r1, 6.1.3

Also, can you please advise on my query#3 from my previous post?

Truely Appreciate all the help! :)

It is impossible to brick an iPhone.
It is a term used by n00bs to blame the phone when they make an error and do not know how to fix it.

If your iOS5 SHSH are complete, you can restore to iOS5 without any issues - check iClarified.com for a tutorial.

Glad to hear about NO RISK statement :D

But what do mean if they are complete? And how do I check that?

I tried looking for a tutorial at iClarified but could not find the one I need. Can you plz pass on the URL if you have one?

P.S. I would prefer to upgrade to iOS6 if you think that's possible!;)

If anything does go wrong, just DFU mode and restore to the latest version and it'll be in a usable state again. Usually, bricking is related to a hardware failure

It's because there were a lot of incomplete iOS 6 blobs. If you're checking cydia -> TSS center, that'll show you the complete blobs cydia has for your device

As of now, you can either get an untethered jailbreak on 5.1.1 or a tethered jailbreak on 6.1.3

It's up to you what to choose and if iOS 6 is more worth it than iOS 5 to you. Let us know when you make a decision between iOS 5 untethered vs iOS 6 tethered

Can't afford tethered jailbreak. So if there is no untethered jailbreak available for iOS 6 on my device, I would prefer to go ahead with iOS 5. Atleast I hope any apps like FB or skype which are no more supporting iOS4, will work on my iOS 5. So please advise accordingly. Thanks!

You can use Redsn0w to verify your iOS5 SHSH
You can restore to 5.1.1 if that SHSH comes back complete.
You could only restore to current iOS6 firmware (6.1.3) since that is the only SHSH you have.

Now this is really getting confusing for me

Plz let's just try to keep it simple. I think I have already provided you all the details you asked for (if you need anything else, plz let me know); and I have downloaded the Redsnow latest version (redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3.zip) and iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B208_Restore.ipsw from iClarified.

I Hope these are the correct ones that I would need!??! If yes, Please advise the next steps.

As you have the 9B208, download your iOS 5.1.1r1 via tinyumbrella

Use redsn0w and make the custom firmware (the no baseband upgrade first). After that, go to the SHSH section and choose to stitch your SHSH blobs. Choose the no baseband upgrade firmware redsn0w just made.

After that, put your device into pwned DFU and then open iTunes, shift+click restore and choose the final custom firmware created

You'll be put on iOS 5.1.1 and then you can use redsn0w or absinthe v2.0.4 to jailbreak or redsn0w and download rocky raccoon from cydia

Many apps will still support iOS 5, until iOS 7 comes out anyways

Okay now additionally I have also downloaded tinyumbrella-6.14.00.exe

Now consider me Novice and plz mention the steps in a little more detail.

Although I was able to do this- "Download 5.1.1 IPSW from here:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

Download latest redsn0w, go to Extras/Custom IPSW no select the downloaded IPSW, redsn0w will create a custom NO_BB IPSW."

But as you said "As you have the 9B208, download your iOS 5.1.1r1 via tinyumbrella" I now could only find this .exe of tiny umbrella. What do I need to do now? And when exactly should I connect my iPhone to my computer?

Appreciate you patience!

----------

Another thing- Currently I have iTunes version 10.6.3 installed on my windows. Do I need to update this too before working on whole of this upgrade process to iOS5? Or having any version of iTunes is okay (including the one I have) ?

I meant to save your iOS 5.1.1r1 SHSH blobs using tinyumbrella (which you have downloaded); you need to plug the device to your computer to do this

If your version of iTunes works for you to sync and backup, it'll work for this stage

If anything does go wrong, just DFU mode and restore to the latest version and it'll be in a usable state again. Usually, bricking is related to a hardware failure

Since it is a locked phone, wouldn't restoring to the latest version in such case would mean that I got to get it IMEI unlocked as the only option for it to work again? As the latest version will most likely NOT be supported by the Gevey Sim.

That is why you make a custom firmware that doesn't update the baseband. It's not the iOS firmware that's important, it's the baseband version

Is there any step by step guide available anywhere with the screenshots?

As advised, I am now first trying to run tiny umbrella .exe file and get a pop-up msg that says "Request SHSH from Cydia is currently set. This can cause issues if you are trying to save current SHSHs ............ "; what do I need to do here exactly? Do I need to make any change in settings?

And how do I save iOS 5.1.1r1 SHSH blobs using tinyumbrella?

And is it after doing whatever needed here, I need to run redsnow and create custom NO baseband upgrade using 9B208 file I downloaded from iClarified?

I'm sure there is a step by step tutorial with pictures somewhere on the Internet. I already gave you a step by step instruction above

There's a button that says "save SHSH" when you run tinyumbrella

I am getting an error while doing the restore - The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194) :(

What does it mean and what to do next?

I tried a possible solution to get rid of this error by modifying the hosts file as suggested by many online; but that didn't really help and am still stuck with the same error.

That error indicates trying to restore to an unsigned firmware

You need to make a no baseband upgrade ipsw using redsn0w. Once it's done processing that ipsw, you have to stitch to iOS 5.1.1r1 SHSH blobs to that ipsw

Once you have the custom ipsw that includes no baseband upgrade and your stitch SHSH blobs, you must put the device into pwned DFU mode

It seems you have already fixed the host file to point to apple so all you need to do now is shift + click restore on iTunes. Then choose the custom no bb upgrade + SHSH blobs ipsw

Okay guys.. I think I have been able to do the restore as there was no error thrown this time but a final screen which said something like you iphone could not be activated and blah blah.. :D

I'll post the details on how was able to do it later, but first I believe I need to activate my iphone by doing a jailbreak.

So do I need to put the phone into DFU mode while doing the jailbreak using redsnow?

In various videos I checked, it says you don't need to do anything except click "jailbreak" but when the Redsnow on my machine is prompting me to do the same. So I am wondering if I am going in the right direction ?

Another thing- Remember I was using gevey Sim to unlock my phone, which during the whole update process so far was removed. So Do I need to put that tray and my SIM card back in during jailbreak or should I complete the jailbreak and then insert back the same?

Jailbreaking with redsn0w requires DFU mode

I'm not sure if redsn0w is built in with hacktivation (it wasn't like 2 years ago when I last used it). If redsn0w doesn't let you jailbreak it, you need to activate the device first

Assuming you did it correct, you should just need to put the gevey sim and it'll activate (I'm not sure how the gevey sim and other related hardware work)

Another alternative for hacktivation is make a custom firmware with sn0wbreeze if you can't activate it with the gevey sim or redsn0w

As a side note, your hosts file is pointing to cydia's server, not apple's server
