Unlocked iPhone in Canada?

The phone is locked and cant do anything with it unless you unlock it first by running some software.
Out of the box its just a brick.

seeing you use turbosim to pretty much get thru and use the wifi - phone, thing is i am not sure if you can use the ipod part of it, i don't see a problem opening up the box and plugging ur iphone to your computer and adding music to it, i could be wrong though

Thinking about picking one up while in the US next week. A good website for info on hacking and activation is http://www.hacktheiphone.com but not unlocking. I wonder if it is possible to just buy an ATT pay as you go card to activate without signing into a contract. But don't know what would happen once the card runs out?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like it can be completely activated with non-phone features functioning (Wi-Fi, Music, Video, Calendar, Photos, Camera, Clock, Calculator, Notes) without any extra fees or contracts if using the hacks...

Then for the unlock, my options are to find a TurboSim, warm up the soldering iron :eek:, or just wait patiently for a software hack to do the unlocking part for the phone to work on Rogers (SMS, Phone, but no-visual Voice Mail). Also, because Rogers rapes us with data fees, I can live without EDGE since I pass through Wi-Fi zones numerous times per day.

A few questions remaining for once I return back to Canada.

Will I be able to disable EDGE, and default to Wi-Fi while on Rogers after unlocking? Using Wi-Fi, will the features Safari, Mail, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather work after the hacked activations or timed-out pay as you go card? Will I still be able to syncronize Calendar, Notes with my MacBook or .Mac account via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth perhaps?

If I can be somewhat certain that I can get the activation part working and stable all while in Canada (without making a trip to the US to be on the ATT network), and take a chance on the unlock for SMS/Phone, then I will spend the money and hope that I don't get bricked...:mad: Lots of questions, and good discussions these last few days...

I wonder if it is possible to just clone the sim card to a blank before cutting it all up. This way you can use a copied sim, and keep the original intact.

All great questions! I hope someone can answer them.

I will pick up an iPhone the moment the software unlock is made public if I can disable EDGE completely...Rogers has 10 Dollar unlimited SMS, so that solves the problem there...as long as I can check my email in WiFi areas.

Theres this ad on craigslist and this guy unlocks the features, so like I said everything will work and u can access everything except the calls and youtube.

Yes u need to unlock the features and the unlockin the sim card is a different task, few people in Canada thats what they did and thats what I did, its a 2 different task, (Unlockin the phone itself and the features such as ipod,safari,weather etc.)

and yeah when u buy your iPhone u WONT be able to use it right out of the box coz everything is locked ure not gonna be able to access anything. even tho u try to plus it on ur iTunes.
