I will gladly explain.

The secret sauce is the multitasking/multiwindow that iOS/iPadOS completely lacks. And, no, Stage Manager doesn’t cut it. My previous iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPad Pro 12.9 still cannot do all the things my Fold 4 can do. Please reference the post here for more detail.
Thanks for your reference.

The high cost will be a major factor, esp. if Apple makes a foldable device, as it usually is.
Also, the OS appears relatively better, since it's unlike Apple's iOS with its infamous walled garden, for file transfers, which is frustrating to many users who likes to move files off their iDevice back onto their computers. Not everyone uses/owns a Mac.

So, if I understand you correctly, your primary argument for a foldable is that it can display documents in a larger size and that you can have multiple apps windowed on screen at the same time.

Is that about right?

Is there any other argument for a foldable (by you or anyone else) other than this specific use case?

No plastic screens, please. I have no objection to new and different device types, but I don't think it serves Apple's brand to offer something so chintzy and fragile. It might be neat to see something with two screens and 180 degree hinges.

I think eventually we will see a folding iPhone. Hopefully not alp iPhones would be, and it is just a part of the lineup. As of right now I don’t see a need for it personally, but I’m sure Apple would have very persuasive arguments for them if they do sell one.

If my 13 Mini could fold in half like a clamshell, that would be pretty cool. Something like the Flip or Razr. But I wouldn't want that crease and plastic screen. I think that phones have grown beyond comfort and foldables are trying to solve that. Though those phones are thick and heavy right now. My vote is for any trend towards smaller phones with glass screens.

I’ve read many different conversations and such with many users who don’t care about a potential “iPhone fold” or straight out think it’s a bad idea.

Meanwhile, I’m here, with an iPhone 14 pro ready to say “my next phone has to be a fold, apple or otherwise”. That said, I’m happy with the apple ecosystem which makes this difficult.

The reason why I want a fold is for the “fun convenience” of having fun tech without needing to have to carry two devices (I’d be ok with an iPad mini size)

Now, OS wise - I have an iPad that I never use because to me it’s still a glorified iOS device. Sure it has improved on multitasking and such, at the end of the day, it can’t replace my MacBook which is what I’d need to justify using it - this is my personal experience, others use it religiously and that’s great for them.

That said, a larger screen can be useful for very specific takes on the go, so having an “iPhone / iPad mini” would be nice, but again, the thought of having to carry two devices is not appealing.

Am I the only one hoping Apple releases a fold?
I've had Galaxy Z Fold 2 and 3 and honestly, I'm with you here. I loved the foldable phone. It was the software that got me back on iOS. Android has made leaps of progress on the multitasking experience since then with Android 12L and up, but it just felt a bit halfbaked back then for me.

i am skeptical of anyone complaining about the brittle, delicate inside display. Nothing felt cheap about Samsung foldables for me, and since it's on the inside of the phone most of the time, if you drop it it's completely protected by the rest of the device. They were perfectly durable in my experience. I assume those people have never actually owned one.

If Apple makes a fold, then great for you OP. Go get one.

As long as Apple does not decide that all iPhones from that point on will be foldable, then you can have yours and I can continue to have my non-foldable model iPhone too.

OP, you want a 'fun convenience'. I want my tool to continue to work as it does now. Calls, texts, light email/web browsing when out. I consume my media on larger screens.

Now, below is my viewpoint from around 3:45am to about 8:30pm. 16 to 18 hours a day.

MacRumors users, I'm taking up a collection for eyoungren. He doesn't have enough screens as is! Please help me raise the $1800 for him to buy a foldable phone of his choice.

I want an iPhone Fold that doesn't have the inherent problems of the current folding phones.

There's a reason Apple hasn't released such a phone yet...it's because they haven't figured out how to solve the inherent problems. When they do, they will.

How are the cameras placed and used? Does the phone has to be unfolded and needs to be a big tablet like to take pics?

I have noticed on this forum that a large majority of users bash the competitors and their products and when apple does the same thing its somehow revolutionary.

But Apple does not do „the same thing“. It may only look like that to the untrained eye.

If it is possible. Which I doubt.

I would absolutely love a folding iPhone in the style of the Z Fold 4 or the Pixel Fold. I do 80% of my web browsing on my phone, so it would be nice to have extra space sometimes.

In terms of a clamshell flip phone, that I don't really have interest in. That's better left in 2006 lol

TC, you're certainly not alone in wanting Apple to compete in the foldables product category. Yet are you interested in buying a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 or Google Pixel Fold? The differences between the products is so slim, I reckon if one of the other two won't do it for ya, then the iPhone Fold won't help ya any better.

Just another gimmick that can break. I say that because manufacturers are looking for new features to entice buyers. Apple has always been late to the game until they are sure their product meets their standards. Maybe they will, but understand they do not manufacture the screens.

Also often late to game to ensure there is a useful/profitable point to the product/service .

Not going to lie, the Pixel fold has me tempted to go back to Android

Apple will absolutely have a fold at some point

Normal people aren’t interested in foldable phones because their benefits, if they actually have any, are outweighed by their faults. Sorry soulless tech nerds, you’ll have to buy something else to fill the endless void in your lives. Don’t worry, Apple is releasing AR glasses soon, and they will completely revolutionize your life for a week.

Among the starlings
If I could get a phone that folded up to the size of the iPhone 4, and that I could use while folded so as to have a one-handed phone again, that’d be awesome. Otherwise? Meh. Not sure what problem it solves.

A new small model, about the size of a Moto RAZR? Sure, I’d be interested. Thin and light. A giant phablet? Twice as thick as the current iPhones when folded? And opens into an iPad mini? NO THANKS

Someone seriously explain the purpose of a foldable iPhone.
What can't the current iPhone (or iPad) can't do? That's more of an iOS issue.
Forget the 'fun to experiment' aspect and fanboy answers as no average person will want to pay a high price just to 'play' with the device and to use it show it off to appease their ego.
It sounds like a gimmick and a very expensive toy for those with money to spend.
Can an ipad fit in your pants pocket?
