Will there be an iPad mini 5? Or is it safe to say the iPad mini is really being discontinued??

Not sure why we needed yet another thread about the iPad mini? No news about that line of iPads in a long time...

No one really knows (though some like to think they do).

Here are some reasonable possibilities... (in order of probability)

The Mini 4 is quietly discontinued in Oct.

A minor spec-bump to the Mini 4 in Oct 18/Mar 19 (similar to how the iPod Touch gets a random processor bump every 2+ years).

The Mini 4 goes on for yet another year without an update.

A low-cost 2018 iPad-like model with support for the Apple Pencil in Mar 19.

Well, the ability of iOS 12 to work on devices as far back as the ipad mini 2 not withstanding...I feel that if Apple doesn’t update the ipad mini soon, it looks like it will be discontinued. Some say the rumored 6.5” iphone x plus will make the ipad mini obsolete. I disagree with that opinion, but perhaps Apple does and will discontinue the ipad. The fact that the ipad mini hasn’t been updated in nearly 3 years doesn’t bode well for it’s survival. Still, i’m holding out slim hope that Apple will at least release a speed bumped ipad mini with pencil support sometime in the near future. Throw us ipad mini lovers one last bone.

The rumored bezel-less ipad pros could make the issue moot anyway. What if Apple looses the bezels on the 10.5” ipad pro but keeps the same screen size? Would that satisfy current ipad mini users? My guess is that Apple will most likely increase the screen size but keep the current size of the ipad pros in the bezel-less versions however. That way they can keep using the current smart covers. If this is the case, will Apple release a bezel-less ipad mini pro? One that expands the current 7.9” screen to something like 8.5”? Along side the 10.5”(13.5”) & 12.9”(13.5”)ipad pros? Highly unlikely, but that’d be pretty cool if they did.

Is 6.5” close enough??

Personally I love the 7.9” screen size, wish that Apple would keep it alive.

If Apple goes bezel-less on their future ipads, imagine an ipad mini with a screen expanded from the current 7.9” to a bezel-less 8.5” but the same physical size as the current ipad mini. Now THAT would be just about the perfect portable ipad to me.

Since the launch of the iPad mini 4, the 9.7" iPad has been updated twice now. Once in 2017 and again in March 2018.

The iPad mini has been left stale since 2015. The mini doesn't support ARKit, something that Apple has been pushing non-stop since iOS 11.

Even Apple's education page no longer shows any iPad mini in their marketing photos.

The message is about as clear as it gets.

I really wanted a Mini 4 and agonized over a purchase for a few weeks. But yesterday I bought a 128gb LTE 2018 iPad. It only cost $30 more than a comparable Mini 4. A processor that's two generations newer and Apple Pencil support are certainly worth $30. I don't understand why Apple hasn't at least adjusted the price of the Mini 4. It's just like the Mac Mini, 2015 technology still selling at 2015 prices.

It sell pretty well in that size! I am still think Apple will update the Mini and release a 5/Pro in July or October 2018!

The iPad mini is dead. In death there are stages of grief. Some around here are in the denial phase.....soon will come acceptance.

I love the size of the iPad Mini... unfortunately, it sleeps with the fishes, just like the Mac Mini.

It’s ok to mentally prepare yourself, but it’s uncouth to mourn someone as gone while they’re still on their deathbed.

Is it on its deathbed?.... or are we just waiting for the coroner to remove the body? :D

I think that would mean Apple is selling a brick. Or that they’ve announced there will be no successor. You’re confusing the analogy!

No it's not, because of the 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

iPad mini has 86.35% larger area.

I would bet that Apple is anticipating that the 6.5" iPhone X+ or whatever they call it will canabalize what is left of the market for the mini. But I also think they will hedge their bets and keep selling the current iPad mini for another year (possibly with a slight processor bump) to make sure and to keep their options open if it doesn't go how they expect.

I would expect the 6.5" iPhone to completely displace the iPad mini as well.

The 6.5" iPhone will have a higher resolution display compared to iPad mini. We saw Apple make a similar move in discontinuing the 17-inch MacBook Pro once they introduced Retina on 15-inch models.

Most consumers simply do not want to carry two similar devices, particularly when iPhone performs nearly as well as a small iPad.

We got my wife’s iPhone 7 battery replaced at an Apple Store this weekend, and all the workers near the Genius Bar had Minis. I really enjoy the light weight, but was ready to return to a bigger screen so got the iPad 6 and will give the Mini to my youngest.
