IPad mini 5 was always rumored for the 2019 line up.... We knew everything that was coming to this October keynote leaked back in July... a 5 day before rumor probably wasn't going to show up at the keynote. Plus the attention and sales it will take away from the overpriced Ipad pro. Unless they do a silent upgrade near December time. I see them doing a Spring 2019 launch. IF no mention or leaks before the spring 2019 launch then id assume it is dead and the rumor is false.

Ipad mini 5:
"Kuo posits it’s being lined up to arrive sometime in 2019 and says it will feature and “upgraded processor and a lower-cost panel”

Very disappointed that there was not an iPad Mini upgrade! Will wait till March to see if Apple will finally release a 5 or better yet a Pro Mini iPad!

Well, if nothing else, they could "dowgrade" the price of the Mini 4 to something more reasonable for a 2015 device. ;)

Why?

I see this kind of thinking a lot with Apple’s more obsolete products. Apple generally just does not do this (I think the iPhones are the only category they generally do do this). They clearly sell enough to continue as is. I really like the form factor. But I am in the distinct minority. And while I could put the power of the A12 and 4gb of ram to use in this form factor, it is much smaller audience than even just the people who prefer a mini screen.

Just the way it is, folks. We are outnumbered. And it makes no business sense for Apple to sell it cheaper than they could on this case. The difference is not going to drive a huge increase in revenue via tons of new users.

I personally think the mini is the like the iPod touch. But maybe Kuo is right; we will see next March.

Apple always update the "minis" really late like the Mac Mini... I would love 1 that supports the pencil but yea they don't want to cannibalize the sales of the new iPad pros.

Well it didn’t get an upgrade, but they did mention the Mini along with regular iPad during the keynote. This, along with the recent rumor, gives hope that they’ll update it in the future. I’m betting in the spring. If it wasn’t going to be part of their iPad lineup in the future, I don’t think they would have mentioned it by name (twice actually, by my count).

Hoping the new pro form factor and relatively same pro specs come to the mini 5 at the same - or cheaper - price point. I'd buy it yesterday if this were the case. A full-screen mini with that much power would be amazing.

I agree. But a $600-700 price tag for it would be a non-starter for me... and I'm a big fan of the Mini.

Ha, if the Mac mini is anything to go by. We can see how it goes now:

Consumers: “I’d pay anything for an upgrade with the latest specs”
Apple:”Oh really?”
Consumers: “On second thoughts maybe not anything...”

(I’m not suggesting you specifically said any of that)

I think it’s clear now that the new iPad mini is either going to be cheaper (and end up making everything but the CPU/GPU actually a downgrade) or severely overpriced for what it will be.

Though I guess the second option is no different to how it already is now.

As soon as they mentioned the 'mini 4' it was obviously not being updated.

But...Tim referred to the 'iPad mini' and the 'iPad' as the 'cheaper' options. This means that the time to update it would be March alongside the iPad 2019.

For the first time, I'm probably leaning more towards it now being updated in March than it being discontinued. They mentioned it more than once this event, which is more attention than its got in a long time, even if it hasn't been updated yet.
I think Cook was refering to Apple’s existing iPad models when he said it! I still hoping for a Pro iPad Mini to be release that has current technology inside instead of a budget version where Apple just uses two year old components, has limited amount of RAM, storage options, lower quality screen and just barely attractive for iPad Mini buyers to pull the trigger. Ugh! For an additional $200 more, Apple can release an iPad Mini Pro.

(pulls out a stubby pencil and mini flip spiral notepad)... put down @HarryWild for a $600 Mini Pro. :D

I still think that the industrial/commercial use cases for the Mini will lend more to a 2018 iPad style Mini.

Yeah same here. I'm honestly hoping Target or Amazon discounts the Pro a bit before Christmas... I'd be open to buying it, but it's a hefty price.

Seriously? The new form factor and specs in a Mini 5 would be well worth that much.

At that price I would be happy to have an upgrade to A10 or higher and edge to edge laminated screen with 256GB - a pencil, keyboard, or more RAM, would just be icing on the cake. I'm fine with the lightning port and headphone jack staying.

I would not look forward to losing the laminated screen just for a faster processor, but I wont buy a Mini 4 as is I fear that it will be obsolete in 1-3 years. So, yeah, I'd still buy a Mini 5 with a worse screen, but I'll resent any areas that they downgrade from the 4.

It's probably a matter of context. I have a wide variety of devices (Apple and non-Apple) that all perform well for the wide ranging tasks I need to (and want to) get done. I take the time to wait and seek out deals. Given that, when I have paid $320 for a 128GB 2018 iPad, and $475 for a new Pixelbook (as is typical of the deals I find) paying a full hypothetical MSRP of $600-700 for a Mini Pro/5 doesn't make financial sense to me.

That is not to say, if I can wrangle a deal to get this mythical iPad 5 for $400, that I would pass it up. I'd be all over it. :D

I hope Apple isn't going to replicate the past mistakes, making a mini iPad with the same point resolution as larger models (playing with 326 ppi vs 264 ppi).

Because a smaller screen can't allow to make as much as larger ones, and to better differentiate the Pros with other models, I'd rather like them to make two models of iPad mono (basically half the screen of larger Pro models, and then capable to display one app when the Pro can show two), to replace the mini and the 9.7" model :

one as half the 11" Pro with 1194x1668 at 264 ppi (7.7" 1.4:1),
and a second one as half the 13" Pro with 1366x2048 at 264 ppi (9.3" 3:2).

or, a concession, as low-end devices: two iPad mono models sharing the same 3:2 resolution 1366x2048, but one at 264 ppi (9.3") and a smaller one at 326 ppi (7.6").

Now, if they want to go Pentile OLED instead of RGB LCD to make more expensive premium devices, there is still this solution : https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...t-mean-anything.2149142/page-10#post-26714684
But I think we'll have to wait, and the Pros will probably get there first :D

Right now, with educational discount, AppleCare, and tax, the current iPad Mini 4 with LTE is approx $625 shipped. I'm saving that $600+ for a new iPad Mini 5, and if I have to pay a little more for the upgraded version with LTE and AppleCare I'll likely do it, because my Air 2 is too big for me to carry around everywhere.

For those interested in picking up a cheap Mini 4 sooner than next spring, Target just announced Black Friday deals and it’ll be $250 (with Redcard $237.50).

Thanks, that's great. Is the Mini 4 still fast? How is the speed compared to the Pro? Also, it annoys me that Apple hasn't dropped Apple pencil support for the Mini...

"speed" is in the eye of the beholder, but my Mini 4 running iOS 10.x is still very snappy. You are not alone in your annoyance at the lack of Pencil support on the Mini. I had been holding out for Pencil-enabled Mini but when Apple released the 2018 iPad this year with Pencil support, I knew that no such Mini would be forthcoming.

The one thing I care about in a new Mini is the lightning port speed because photo import on the current one is much slower than on the Pros. An import that took 12 or 13 minutes on the Pro (several thousands photos) took over 70 minutes on the Mini 4. I use my Mini 4 a lot because it’s a handy size, but I bought it mainly for handling photos and it’s just too slow in some cases.

If there’s a new Mini with faster I/O, I’ll get it.

My experience in basic casual use is the 10.5” Pro is snappier in general than my old Mini 4, but not enough to blow it away or make me dread using the Mini. I was on the latest version of iOS 11 but sold it before 12 came out, and I’ve read here that others members say 12 improved it. For casual use and reading, it’s fast enough I think.

That's great! The form factor of the iPad mini is perfect for me. I never bought it because it doesn't have Apple pencil support and Apple always seem to neglect it like all their lower priced items. I will keep my 10.5 but I really wish that they will have the mini in a pro version.
