I have read through the whole forum and finally decided to take the plunge and upgrade by SSD in MBPr 13" Late 2013. Since I am india couldn't get the Sintech Adapter. Got one from Aliexpress. I used the Adapater and it detects my SSD when i tried to boot from my time machine. I am planning going to restore my time machine back up to this new drive or should I install a fresh mojave to this drive and then restore from time machine

SSD I have - WD BLACK (500 GB) NVME SSD (wds500g2xoc)
Adapter - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32873039055.html

Most of the time my Mac is connect to the charger. I don't use standby much on battery. Also, i want to know which command to give for this setting in terminal. Also please explain me other modes of Hibernate i can use. Also any other changes I have to make after restoring from my time machine. I am currently using 256 GB Apple ssd in my mac.

Sorry for posting this as i know this information is available in the various posts but they are scattered.

I purchased a cheap no-name adapter ($2.34 USD with free shipping to Canada) from eBay and lexar NM 600 240 GB (https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=179_1296&item_id=139194) to use in an early 2015 13" Air. This combination works perfectly with a fresh install and a restore from a TM backup. SSD is recognized as x4 drive and allowed a bootrom update to happen when I upgraded from High Sierra to Mojave.

This adapter is slightly bigger than the small, black Sintech; therefore, I had to fiddle a bit with positioning to get the drive screw inserted.

Anyone experience crashes lately?
I got two this morning, haven't had any in a year since installing the drive.

Black Magic reports originally around 2500 write / 2000 read.

After maybe 2/3 additional runs, write speed will maintain (or at least build to it's high), but the read speed will drop off a cliff.

I'm sure it's been covered in one of the 200 pages here, but would someone be kind enough to clarify why?

I’ve used Sabrent rocket 1TB and I don’t have that issue, I’ve read that before But I might be wrong, believe it has to do filled cache, have you tried using 1GB file test or try using AmorphousDiskMark see if you get same issues.

This is what I suspected, cache being full (using the 5GB file size) - With the 1GB file test size no issues - so I suspect that's the cause

¿Will for example 4TB nvme ssd work our machines in the future?

PS: My Macbook pro 15" 2015 updated with 1TB Sabrent Rocket + long black sintech adapter still working perfectly. No issues at all, its been 4 months already since the upgrade..

Hey everyone this is my first post to the forums. I was going to post about the 7.5 wireless charging limitation posted earlier on the main site but found in the forums what I wanted to ask. (i'll make that my second post to say thanks)

Then I found this thread and thought what the heck maybe time to get a bigger drive and from it seems way better performance.

Still early reading the full forum posts but wondering if I should hold off worrying about the hibernation thing for the catalina upgrade and obviously doing the upgrade in the first place considering we're so close to release?

Also which 2Tb drives would be best? In the past I've been partial to crucial and samsung ssds but their ones seem limited to 1Tb.

The 2tb sabrent

seems great.

Are there better ones?

Also I see PCIe 4.0 version sabrent one too would that be compatible or worth paying the extra for?

Oh one other question anyone buy a caddy for the original drive? Any good suggestions, I know OWC has but living in the UK not sure I can get them easily here?

Thanks.

I'll start posting way more and stop being an observer.

I've got a mid-2015 MBP Retina 15" and I've ordered the Sintech adapter in the first post plus a Sabrent 1TB drive. There's nothing wrong with my current original Apple 256GB drive but I work with app development and could use the extra space. It is a work rig however and I just wanted to shoot the question here to see if the setup I've ordered is solid and stable? I'd definitely prefer that to it being fast. I got the Sabrent drive based on recommendations here and other places but am curious if anyone has problems with the setup in a mid-2015 machine?

Great thread and glad to see that it's finally possible to update the ssd on these devices :)

on 2015 there isn't any problems except as all NVMe drives: higher speeds means higher battery usage.

Been trying to comb through the thread but haven't really read anything. I have a 2015 mbp 15' using the sintech short adapter and a 512gb sabrent rocket. Getting random kernel panics but usually after opening laptop the next day. Did a fresh install of mojave but still getting random panics. Wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and how they solved?

thanks!

Have you tried reseating the adapter and drive? Does the adapter need to have kapton tape applied?

While I have had very positive experiences upgrading my 13" Late 2013 MBP to an nvme 1TB Adata SX8200,
I have had a very frustrating time upgrading my 13" early 2015 with 2TB Sabrent Rocket nvme SSDs.

Right out of the gates, kernel panics every time it would sleep.
Ran hot.
Tried a new short Sintech adapter. taped it.
Tried a new long Sintech adapter.
The kernel panics just kept getting worse.
Moved the drive and adapter, to the Late 2013 MPB and the problems followed the drive.
And the drive got worse and worse to the point where it would KP if you looked sideways at it.

Ergo the drive is faulty.
So I ordered a second 2TB Sabrent Rocket.
Initially: problem solved - 3 days of bliss free operation -- no kernel panics, no sleep or hibernation issues!
Seemed to run cooler too
Was about to post about it...

And the drive died. Non responsive, does not show up for love or money.

Dead.

So now I have a 2TB Adata SX8200 Pro inbound.

I hope "that the third time is the charm", and that by bad luck I just encountered two bad Sabrent drives.

Looks like i dont have any tape. Ill apply and test it some more.

Very worrying information as I've got an incoming Sabrent drive. Hopefully the Adata will solve it for you for good!

Interestingly, unlike my SX8200 1TB (non pro) in my 13" MBP Late 2013 which shows up as "Apple SSD Controller",
the 2TB Pro shows up as generic

Given the failure of the two Sabrent 2TB drives, I feel like I should be stress testing this somehow.

There might be a problem elsewhere. Can you confirm that it's the SSD? (try logging SSD Current draw using iStatMenu among other stats). (I'm considering the switch from 970 Pro to Sabrent)

AFAIK, a lot of ppl (inc. the excel in the first page) suggest that Sabrent have like, half the power consumption on the laptop.

Have you patched the BootROM(with the 2015 ones)? or updated the BootROM at all?
It helped in my case (better stability on my rMBP 2015 after updating from 183.0.0 to 195)

Same problem here, I have Macbook Pro 15 Mid 2015 with Sabrent 512Gb SSD and I've got 3 hours of basic work on macbook. My boot rom is 192.0.0.0.0. Is there any solution for this ? Is there any better SSD with lower power consumption than sabrent ?
This is power consumption of my ssd it's basically between 200 and 550 mA.

Hi,

I hope someone of you can help me. I bought two new nvme SSDs (model: MICRON 2200 NVMe 1024GB SSD | M.2 2280 Gen3 X4)

These SSDs should be compatible with my two Macbook Pros according to the seller.

i tested the two SSDs in two different macbook pros (each 2014 | A1398 | latest MAC OS Mojave | Boot-ROM-Version: 156.0.0.0.0 | SMC-Version (System): 2.18f15). Unfortunately both SSDs don't work. The macbooks restarts in a continuous loop. During the boot process there is always a kernel panic.

If the new SSD is installed, I also can't boot from an installation Usb Stick, because the computer crashes with a kernel panic.

I have tried different things and researched at google. I would describe myself as an advanced mac/pc user, but couldn't find a solution.

Therefore I would be very happy if you could offer me a solution.

Best regards,
Colin

Hi, I have a Mid-2014 13" Macbook Pro running MacOS Mojave Ver.10-14.6 on it.
I am planning to upgrade the SSD on this machine with a Sintech NGFF M.2 PCIe SSD Card WITH A CRUCIAL P1 1TB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (CT1000P1SSD8).

Where can I find an easy step-by-step guide to assist me in this upgrade.
And, for anyone who has done this before - what precautions do I need to take before, during & after this upgrade ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

ollers have been hitting 60-70MegaBYTES a second, which is the new benchmark. Same goes for random write speeds - 70-100Megabytes a second was considered great, but now we are hitting 150MegaBYTES plus!!! ) - it is important to state that you want to compare

I think that Sabrent rocket has almost the lowest power consumption available. About your power consumption, you might want to check elsewhere.

Been eyeing to switch from sabrent rocket myself. My 970 Pro (I wanted speed at the time) is consuming 0.3A minimum, 0.66A average, and 1.6A at load. Thats translate into 1.5W idle to about 4W at load. vs Sabrent's 0.5W idle 1.4W load.

Also, I get about 4-5 hours out of my rMBP 2015 15" (DG). my BootROM version is 195.0.0.0 (from Catalina Beta FW update). (I force it to update using /usr/libexec/efiupdater)
