Some lower end model of silicon power are using SM2263XT. So you might want to write down the specific model name, hahaha.

But even the lower end model perform just good for Air and non 15 inch of retina model.

After all, any NVME drive would still be an upgrade compare to apple preinstalled SSD.

Both are P34A80, the same referred to in the link https://tinyurl.com/y2c2tprw

Cheers,

I think you mean "Corsair" MP510 ? Since i never heard Crucial releasing NVME blade with that code, lol

Corsair drive is not easily found in my country, and the price is quite high. So i never really have much experience with it. Although spec wise, it should serve you just fine,

But again, a 3000++ spec ssd is an overkill for your macbook air. Unless it cost reasonably cheap in your country, i wont suggest it.

Lol, yeah i meant the Corsair MPP510 :)

I know it's overkill speed wise, but the charts on the first page show low power consumption and good power efficiency for this SSD. The SSD's i'm currently checking out (Silicon Power P34A80, Sabrent Rocket, Barracuda 510, Corsair 510) are in similar price range (75 - 100 Euro) so i would go for the one with low power consumption and high reliability.

First, thanks for a very good and informative thread! I have however got an issue after replacing my SSD.

Battery not charging after SSD upgrade (Macbook Pro 2015 13")

- I used a "long" NGFF adapter (from Wish) and the Kingston A2000 500GB NVME SSD
- I followed an instruction video like this, basically disconnecting the battery before replacing the SSD,

Problem:
- The laptop is completely dead when the charger is not connected
- When the charger is connected the battery menu says "Service recommended" and "Not charging", and system profiles says shows cycle count 400, charge is 49%, 0 ampere
- New SSD works fine

What I have tried:
- Double check the battery connection, multiple times, everything looks fine
- Reset SMC multiple times - no difference
- Reset PRAM/NVRAM - no difference
- Reset where you hold the power button for 10 seconds - did start computer with fans at maximum and no battery detected, but after restart no difference
- Switching back to old SSD (and reset SMC i think) - no difference

Ways forward:
- Buy a new batter? Is that likely to work, why did the battery suddenly die in the first place?
(Some people have issues with charging because of the magsafe connector, but that seems unlikely in this case, as if that would be the case then the laptop would work on battery but simply not charge, but in my case it is dead without charger)

Anyone else experienced anything similar? It does not seem like people typically get this kind of problem when replacing the SSD.

Mid-2014 15" 11,3 (2.8GHz, 16GB, GT750M)
OSX 10.13.6, bootrom 162.0.0.0

I want to upgrade my computer to 2TB. Based on the guide at the beginning of the thread, I was gonna go with Sabrent Rocket 2TB but now I'm reading anecdotal reports that newer versions of this drive use the Phison E12S controller and have less DRAM and therefore no longer perform as well as when tested for the tables at the beginning of the thread.

So do I go with a different drive? I need one that comes in a 2TB size.

Did you disconnect the battery as soon as you removed the bottom cover?

Did you inspect the connector on the battery and logic board for damage?

Anything you go with will be limited by PCIe 2.0 Bus speed. About 1500 MB/sec read/write.

should I trim my MacBook Pro 15" mid 2015 with Samsung pro 970 1tb ssd to get the highest performance?
my link width is x2 for some reason, I can't realise why.
my speed is supposed to be around 2500W/3000R, if ill " forcetrim enable" my MacBook it would help?
is it dangerous to do it? please help me and let me know if should I do it.
thanks.

It is not dangerous. But TRIM is a SATA extension, and doesn't apply for NVMe. NVMe has similar functionality by default.

Hello,

I have some questions concerning upgrading to an NVMe SSD for my macbook Pro 15" mid 2015, that I hope someone here can help me with.

I have bought a Corsair MP510 960GB SSD, and the sintech adapter, but for some reason my mac isnt registering it at all, it doesnt show up when I go to install Mac os in disk utility. I read somewhere that i have to format it to HFS plus in order for the mac to register it.

So I bought an enclosure, but the drive does not fit the enclosure, I've tried other enclosures and none fit the drive. Am I missing something here, or is the drive actually manufactured incorrectly? The enclosure is called Icy Box. The drive fits the Sintech adapter and fits the macbook perfectly.

I hope someone here can help because im lost. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I'm aware of this limitation. However, considering I'm only currently getting like 600 MB/sec with the stock drive, this will be an improvement.

I would check the battery connector pins inside the connector to make sure the male pins didn't get bent over when you connected it back up. You most likely have to use a flashlight, magnifying glass, and mirror to see them..

( ) on a Sabrent Rocket 2 TB I ordered for my 2015 15" last weekend. Since returned. Still on the fence about whether to get Samsung Evo Plus 2TB tho (Now That I got NVMefix to work with my old 512GB 970 pro on MBA 2015 11", sidle @ 3-4 W systempower w/ undervolt)

I upgraded my MacBook pro 13inch early 2015 with Sabrent Rocket 512GB SSD with Sintech Adapter..

I some how managed to install macOS Mojave on the drive and later upgraded to Catalina. Now I checked the speed of READ/WRITE on both Catalina and Mojave.. The Write speed is around 500MB/s and write is around 1300MB/s. My old original SSD performed even better than this..

I don’t know if its a firmware update issue. But I contacted Sabrent customer support and they told me that there isn’t a “Mac/ISO” firmware format in their site. They only have “.exe” format for windows.

Can anyone suggest me any quick solution other than trying it out in a windows pc..

Is this write speed constant across multiple benches. Even my current drive (Sabrent rocket 1 TB) do ~1400 read/write on PCIe 2 x4 11" MBA 2015 (My main is 15" 2015, and that has PCIe gen 3 x4, and has ~2400-2500 read/write there).

Keep in mind that those are peak numbers. It falls by about half once it start throttling. (https://tpucdn.com/review/sabrent-rocket-q-1-tb-m-2-nvme-ssd/images/thermal-write.png)
Even then, it shouldn't go below 1000 MB/s.

Check if the utilization of drives, temps. Have you been running benchmarking on it non-stop? (Cache maybe full), or SSD throttles from higher temp. Please check using iStat Menu.

Sorry , but its a fresh install, and I tried the test using BlackMagic disk speed test for more times during last 2days.. I haven't even copied or backed anything from my time capsule yet.. the storage as of now in ssd is the OS. thermal are very low... I don't know why this Ssd gives such low values for PCIE gen2.. the rocket 512 is almost rated at 3000MB/s but not even half of it is delivered..
Do you have any suggestions on trying this ssd on windows pc and updating the firmware from there and then reinstalling the ssd???

Prior to your post, I ordered this Sabrent Rocket 2TB ($229 after $50 coupon) and this Sintech Adapter. I guess I'll see what I get in regards to the drive and then determine if I need to return it. Is there any markings or codes on the packaging or drive itself that'll hint at whether it's the version I want or not?

There had been news about Sabrent "cheaping out" on DRAM amount on the newer Sabrent Rocket revisions on some models (check #7196, ex: Sabrent rocket 2 TB, originally had 2GB DRAM now have 512 MB DRAM). Also, The one you got isn't one of those QLC ones, is it?
