If I have an older backup iPhone such as the 7 or 8, will I be able to switch from esim back to sim easily? I like taking my secondary device to festivals and outings where I don't want an expensive (not to mention heavy) iPhone. Not happy about this change.

I’m not sure that this is available for me. I’m on AT&T prepaid. I’ve never actually seen this available on anything, and certainly never seen any language about eSIM on any AT&T sites.

In principle it seems like this out to be no big deal, but then it’s really like the gigantic pain it was dealing with switching phones back on QUALCOMM’s CDMA2000.

Not sure if there is an advantage to changing my 13 PM to eSIM now as my 14 PM will have a new EISM and I,have to do it again.

God I hate dealing with ATT

Esim is amazingly simple. Just did it on a 12 pro… no need to go into the store anymore. Just provide the phone imei over the phone to the carrier rep, and they send it to you digitally. Plus we got +70~ mah to the battery as a result
I was with you until you said it increased your battery.

Can eSim be held hostage by a carrier? My biggest problem is trying to switch and a carrier being shady. Having worked in cable before, I've seen how badly these things can go.

I have never had a carrier that refuses to release number.

Do all carriers provide eSIMs in the US?

I'm in the UK. EE PayG doesn't support 5G and doesn't support eSIM. I'm not willing to pay triple for a contract just to get 5G and eSIM.
The major US carriers support it, but not all of the MVNO's.

The eSIM only is specific to US iPhone's, per the keynote.

When traveling overseas, I always get a local prepaid SIM card. I’m curious to see how this will work out during my next trip.

Basically everyone in the US are the testers of the pilot program. If it fails (and it will) the SIM will be back with the iPhone 15. The hubris at Apple…

If you are on any of the following carriers:
AT&T
C Spire
T-Mobile USA
US Cellular
Verizon Wireless
You do not need to call if you are already using an eSIM. iPhone 14 quick setup process will auto handle it for you.
If you are on one of the carriers I listed but on a physical SIM, go to Settings > Cellular > Select the SIM card and you should find an option to switch to eSIM. Do it now.

If you are on any of the following carriers:
Boost Mobile
Cellcom
Credo Mobile
FirstNet
H2O Wireless
Spectrum Mobile
Straight Talk
Strata
Tracfone
Xfinity Mobile

You may need to call or visit a branch for them to add your iPhone to their system then your iPhone will see the eSIM using auto discovery.

You can also click your carrier name in the following list to learn more:
Appalachian Wireless
AT&T
Boost Mobile
Carolina West Wireless
Cellcom
Chat Mobility
Consumer Cellular
Copper Valley Telecom
Credo Mobile
Cricket
C Spire
FirstNet
GCI
H2O Wireless
Metro by T-Mobile
Mint Mobile
Nemont
Nex-Tech Wireless
NorthwestCell
Optimum Mobile
Pioneer Wireless
PTCI
PureTalk
Red Pocket
Republic
Spectrum Mobile
Straight Talk
Strata
Thumb Cellular
T-Mobile USA
Tracfone
Truphone
Ubigi
Union Wireless
United Wireless
US Cellular
Verizon Wireless
Visible
West Central Wireless
Xfinity Mobile

I wish. But they always double down and keep changes like this.

Been using two esims on my 13 pro max. Mint Mobile and Verizon. Been working really well. Did everything online. Took a few mins. Switched several family members to esims too (12 pro max) so they didn’t have to go to a store to get sims.

Good to know mint mobile has esim.

It depends on your carrier. Here up north (Canada) some carriers (Fido) will charge you $10.00 to change from SIM to e-sim. Others (shaw) will allow you to upgrade free of charge. If you switch phones, then be expect to shell out $20.00 ($10 from each carrier) to update your e-sim to a new number (i.e. can't transfer). Of course, some carriers will just give you a new physical SIM so you switch to that and then convert it to an e-sim.

Either way, I sort of welcome this change. It will be more annoying for phone "testers" like me who likes to test the phone for > 14 days before commit to one. Other opinion might differ.

I personally cannot buy the 14 pro max, that i want.

I have a company sim, and use my personal as an esim, so i font have to carry 2 phones.

My company will not be offering esims any time soon, so i will either need to import an international version, or will not be able to upgrade.

This is a major bummer that means I have some hard decisions to make. Due to my company's "2 year upgrade" contract I can only order a new iPhone every other year. The off years I have been buying personally and swapping the SIM card. My company controls the number so I can't transfer to eSim or make any changes to the account - I am literally at their mercy. I could buy a new iPhone 14 of course with a new phone number (they will only release my phone number to me when I retire or quit even though I have had the number 24 years and it means NOTHING to them). But if I do that and forgo my phone number of 24 years I still can't setup corporate email on the device because its a different phone number than the one they own. Life was good with SIM swapping to get the phone I wanted but now that's not possible. My work email, phone number, and upgrade frequency are out of my hands unless I want to sacrifice 2 of the 3.
The only option I have to get an iPhone 14 is to buy an international version to still SIM swap but then I lose mmWave bands on Verizon and it's a hassle to get.
or I guess I could quit my job to get my phone number liberated and not get work email on my phone. that kinda sounds like a win/win.

BTW - my company corporate phone plan literature says they do not support eSIM. I suppose that will change quickly since folks will want iPhone 14.

Or you could just use the phone your company provides. You really don't need a new iPhone every year.

Only US models have the eSIM limitation others like the A2890/A2894 don’t
