Also don't forget there could be materials science involved.. one cable may be sourced with better conducting wire made with different metals. Not all metals conduct electricity equally..

This is true, I have seen cut rate computer cables, usb, power, or whatever, that use copper plated brass wires. That cant possibly be as good as real copper wiring.

It's actually a "flat and wide" cable vs a more typical "round" cable. All of the pictures show the cable from the thin edge. If you rotated it 90 degrees, the cable would appear thicker than a typical cable.

I have a few other retractables too (Ethernet), and those are flat cable too.

after reading all the praise about this card, I ordered a HighPoint RocketU 1144C. not only has it a controller for each port, no, this card also uses 4 PCIe lanes, each controller has its own PCIe lane! this card is well worth the money

After reading about it here, I, too, installed the HighPoint RocketU 1144C in my 2010 Mac Pro. I'm please with the operation, and having a controller for each USB is a plus. :)

Just got one my self.
It’s actually cheaper to order from AmazonUS and have it sent over to the UK than buy here.
(£130 vs £64!!!).

This thread refers to PCIe cards for adding USB 3.0 to classic Mac Pros. New Mac Pros have USB 3.0 built-in using the Fresco Logic FL1100 chipset.

Inateck (Fresco Logic FL1100 chipset)
(Best for general purposes and compatible with most devices)

Inateck KT4004 (formerly known as KTU3FR-4PA rev B2). 4-port USB. Does not require supplemental power. About $20-$30.
Complained to Inateck about ejecting in 10.10.
They just replied 10.10 not supported.

The ejecting issue isn't an Inateck issue. This happens to Apples own USB 3.0 ports from the factory. The issue has to do with the drive enclosure's electronics and OS X. It doesn't matter what USB 3.0 card you install, you will still have this issue. The Inateck card works fine on 10.10.

One user here (flowrider) found at least one USB 3.0 enclosure that does not have this problem. Seek him out and I'm sure he will tell you the model.

Why would the Inateck site for the card say specifically it isn't compatible with 10.10? What's not compatible about it, then?

Because the card was not specifically designed to work with 10.10, and it wasn't tested for 10.10.

I've had many at length discussions with them about this. There is a VERY small number of users who had an issue with the Inateck card who happened to be on Yosemite. Rather than helping said customers troubleshoot and find a resolution, they simply decided to say that 10.10 isn't supported.

There are MANY MANY users using the Inateck card with Yosemite, including me. Do try other cards though. I own and have tested most of them (except for the Caldigit which is reportedly very good).

Tech. Support on any of them isn't particularly great.

It makes me wonder because I've had the card for a while and occasionally have issues with the ports not recognizing something is plugged in.

TBH, sometimes my HighPoint 1144C does that too, a power down and cold boot usually fixes it. ****, even my MacBook 2009 doesn't sometimes. And that's in Mavericks & Yosemite. Once something does connect it never drops though.

IMHO, Apple still doesn't give programming or optimizing USB 3.0+ drivers any priority, water is wet, etc.

This is sooo sad that Apple doesn't care to fix their USB issues.
Those who can afford, has to buy TB connected drives to have their macs work as intended.
Not fun to have remote session to your mac to pull some file from some drive and notice that you forgot to unplug usb3 drive and it halts the whole system when mac is waken.

Btw, my random eject problem was solved with shorter extension cables. Hanging or ejecting after sleep doesn't seem to be resolved...

Flowrider has 66 posts in this thread. Can you point where there was talk about cases or should I just PM?

When I switched to an Hornettek Viper USB 3.0 enclosure with a fast Seagate HDD, the problem went away.

Also, I have an MBA with native USB 3.0. I use an Orico 2.5" USB 3.0 enclosure with a 2.5" Hybrid SHDD. I only use that drive occasionally, but it has the same "Disk Not Ejected Properly" issue.

The absurd level of this is "beyond Kafka".
So, we have these "customer support level 0 monkeys" that will repeat: "we don't offer any drivers to this card, but if we were offering them, we wouldn't be supporting 10.10 with them" and "the same chipset is in current Mac Pro model and it's supported straight from Apple to 10.10, but we don't support Apple, 10.10, FL1100 or KT4004. We will support some future product, which is in reality supported by Apple, but we are not making any drivers for it, so we don't support drivers that don't exist...", etc.

Shortly, Apple supports FL1100 to 10.10, so the only support Inateck could support is customer support, which they don't. And we are supposed to buy products from this company?

Mac Pro 5,1 will not boot with a SATA drive powered on.

Just purchased and installed a new Caldigit FASTA-6GU3 Pro in my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) 5,1 - 3.33 GHz 6-Core. Mac Pro starts and runs perfectly except when I start up with any of the 2 SATA drives I own powered up. My Mac Pro has a grey screen and will not boot. This does not occur with USB 3 drives connected.

The first time I installed the NEW Fasta Pro my Mac would not start up at all until I switched the order of the PCI cards so the that the Velocity X2 SSD card is in the top most slot. the FASTA PRO in the second slot down. Reversing the order the Mac Pro would not start at with no external drives connected at all.

The 2 SATA drives I have work fine as firewire drives. The questions are:
1. Is SATA pointless now?
2. Other than removing the Velocity X2. Is there any fix for this issue?
3. Is my mac different or is this a know problem resulting from the OS X 10.10.3 update??

This is awesome! Can't wait.

I have a quick question. I just picked up a 1TB Apple blade which is going in slot 3 and may one day get a second for RAID 0. I've read it's best to do raid in slots 2 and 3.

If my USB 3.0 adapter is in slot 4, will this slow down the performance of the RAID drive if used at the same time? If I understand correctly, 3 and 4 are tied together when it comes to performance.

Also, in the meantime (while I only have 1 TB blade), would it be best to put this in slot 2 at 16x to make sure there is no performance hit to the 1TB Apple SSD in slot 3? I understand it is only a 4x card, so will it work properly there? I have the Highpoint Rocket 1444C card.

I just discovered that Mavericks doesn't seem to play well with ASMedia based USB 3.0 & 3.1 cards. both, the HighPoint RocketU 1144C and the ASUS USB 3.1 TYPE-A Card are totally unrealiable for me if used under OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks. at least writing data to a WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 harddrive doesn't work well. tried the same with OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite and everything was fine. went back to the Sonnet Allegro USB 3.0 PCIe 4-Port on my main machine (which still runs OS X Mavericks).

I'm sorry to hear that Mike. I used the 1144C with Mavericks and it was totally reliable with my WD drives. I don't have the "WD Elements" but I do have the the My Book and some WD drives in 3rd party enclosures. Strange that the issue goes away under Yosemite. HighPoint Tech. Support informed me that it is definitely supported in 10.9.

this is very strange... I tried it on two machines (MacPro4,1 flashed to 5,1 and real 5,1. one's equipped with the HighPoint RocketU 1144C and the other with the ASUS). tried it with and without the industrial grade USB 3.0 hub, also tried it with different USB 3.0 cables. when copying data to the WD it stalled or sometimes it even spontaneously ejected. none of this happens under Yosemite. I guess the WD Elements Portable must be one of the most widely used drives available on the market. this specific WD never gave me trouble except now when used with ASMedia based cards and OS X Mavericks. also no problems whatsoever with the Fresco Logic based card so I went back to the Sonnet for now.

What slot did you have your card in? I currently have my HP 1144C in Slot 3, since that's supposed to be the best spot on my mid-2012 MP..

Can you send me a link to the specific drive you have?
