Is there any way to convert the front facing USB port into USB 3.0?

Only with a bit of engineering and if you have a USB 3 card with an internal port to connect it to. Use high powered hub instead.
Someone did it to his Mac Pro 3,1.
Once the Mac Pro is set up, I'd like to jam it in and so will have very limited access to the rear. I suppose a top mounted USB hub is an option. Cards with internal ports are hard to come by, and of course there doesn't seem to be good driverless cards to suit.
I was just looking at cards recently and found the Inateck KT-4006. Two external and two internal via the 20-pin connector.
I believe Inateck states their cards are not compatible with Yosemite, but everyone finds they work just fine (including the one in mine).I thought I read somewhere the Inateck didn't play nice with more recent OSes. I suppose it's worth a shot if it gives me faster connections than my USB 2.0 and Firewire 800.

It's best explained in post #1 here, but the chipset used on the Inateck and Orico are identical to what is used in Mac's already and has built-in support in OSX. It won't get more love, or less! It will always be there.Just to cover their behind? I hope it gets even more love with El Capitan!
Thanks all for the answers.
What happens when only one controller is in use and the card is on a PCI 1.1 4x slot ? Is that controller limited to its own dedicated lane, or does the 1144C makes all 4 lanes available to it ?

Succeed! Add USB expension card to fix the USB port failure on Mac Pro 3,1

Correction : USB 3.1 cards are recognised in El Cap as 3.0 but they won't be able to connect to any devices. Nothing, not even a mouse.
What chipset? The Highpoint specs page doesn't even specify it.How about This..??
Highpoint RocketU 1322A (USB 3.1 Type A)

Have just updated to 10.11,and my 3 LaCie USB 3.0 hard drives will not mount. I am using a LaCie USB 3.0 card and the latest driver on their website is 2011!!
Worked fine in Yosemite, any suggestions will be appreciated.
They do,using them as USB 2.0 until I can sort it out.Do the drives mount properly when attached to the USB 2.0 ports.
The LaCie card requires drivers from LaCie. I would download the latest from their website and if those don't work, contact LaCie support.
My dislike for custom drivers is actually why I started this thread in the first place.
